Stop moaning and arching your back - this is an autopsy!
aftercare for posting on ao3
your fic was good you did grammar good you’re the kind of freak people like everything’s cool dude :^)
Tell me, Adeimantus — you who have spent so many hours in the discords and subreddits of our people — what is it that distinguishes a shounen anime from a shoujo?
I confess I have never considered the matter carefully, Socrates. I suppose shounen is for boys and shoujo is for girls?
A fine beginning. But let us look deeper. Imagine a young boy, playing with his toys. Does he not bash them together?
He does, yes.
And do he and his friends not argue endlessly over which of their toys would win in a fight?
Constantly, and with great passion.
Now imagine a young girl, playing with her toys. Does she not make them kiss?
…She does.
Does she not argue with her friends not over who would win in a fight, but over who belongs with whom?
I begin to see where you are going.
And if Aphrodite has been kind, and has bestowed upon her the φουτζόσι nature — does she not find her brother's Naruto and Sasuke toys, and make them explore each other's bodies?
I — yes, Socrates. I suppose she does.
Then the soul of shounen discourse is powerscaling — who beats whom — and the soul of shoujo discourse is shipping — who loves whom, and how, and with what degree of emotional devastation.
That seems correct.
Now. Is there a further distinction to be made, within these categories? Between those who are, as the moderns say, woke, and those who are chuds?
I think there must be, though I am uncertain how to draw it.
Consider: is it not the woke who care deeply about the precise definitions of abuse and consent — who will debate endlessly about power imbalances and trauma responses and what exactly constitutes a toxic dynamic?
It is. I have seen these debates. They are very long.
And do the chuds not repudiate such pretensions entirely, and concern themselves only with who is the most attractive — who, as they put it, is best to goon to?
They do, and they are also very loud about it.
Good. Then let us apply this framework to some examples, so that we may be sure we understand it. What of Dragon Ball Z?
Clearly a shounen. The discourse is entirely about power levels. Goku versus Superman. Whether Vegeta could beat Frieza if he had another week to train. Neither especially woke nor especially chud — simply loud.
Ouran High School Host Club?
Shoujo, plainly. The discourse is entirely about which host Haruhi should end up with. Neither particularly woke nor unwoke — simply romantic.
Steven Universe?
Woke shoujo, and almost insultingly obvious. The entire discourse concerns whether various gems were abusive toward Steven, what his codependency with his father means, and whether Spinel deserved better. I have never once seen anyone ask whether Steven could beat a particular gem in a fight. I have seen thousands of words written about whether Pink Diamond was a victim or a perpetrator.
And now — Chainsaw Man?
Surely it is a shounen? It has a chainsaw for a head. There are extremely gory fight scenes. I would have said… neither woke nor chud, perhaps. But certainly shounen.
Think carefully, Adeimantus. Did not the scene in the back alley, with Yoru, and the nature of what she offered Denji — did that not spark hundreds of Reddit threads?
…It did. I remember them. They were quite heated.
And were they debating whether Denji could beat a given devil in a fight?
No. They were debating whether what occurred constituted a meaningful violation, given Denji's initial objection and Asa's anger.
Consent and abuse discourse.
…Yes.
And do not some fans still mourn Reze, and insist she was the one who truly understood Denji? While others argue passionately that Asa is the only one who could give him what he actually needs?
The shipping wars are, I will admit, extensive.
And have you ever — even once — heard Chainsaw Man fans argue about whether Denji could beat a particular devil in a straight fight?
…I cannot say that I have.
Then observe what we have found. Chainsaw Man's discourse is concerned not with power, but with relationships. It is therefore shoujo. Its discourse is concerned not with attractiveness, but with abuse, consent, and emotional damage. It is therefore woke. And thus —
Astonishing, Otakrates. Chainsaw Man is a woke shoujo manga.
I could not have said it better myself.
It really doesn't take overly much to make isekaislop at least a bit better. Just not making the protagonist a generic and average blank slate dude is already a big improvement and a notable factor in all the isekai I do actually like.
Like how in Magirevo Anisphia is an obsessive weirdo with transhumanist aspirations who goes as far as to do experiments on herself and also becomes part dragon and also has mental illnesses.
I googled her and read her wiki page. My first thought was "this sounds like a transgender fantasy". The next thing I found after her wiki page was a Reddit thread about whether her previous life was a man.
I guess the moral is, if you're gonna do a wish-fulfillment second life, do it for a specific audience and not the imagined lowest common denominator.
Very perceptive observation! The author denied that this was the intention or that she was a man previously but there is a clear comparison there regardless.
She wants to know if anybody wants to pway fwogs with her
We pwayed fwogs a widdo after her baff :)
Saw somebody in the notes of that one post of mine suggest that American football should be called handball.
Buddy, there’s already two whole different sports called handball.
We should make a list of all sports and refer to them by ordinal number.
This is important, in no situation must we reorganize the list. Once it's done, the only changes to happen are additions to the end.
"I played №6 yesterday, it was fun!"
Not just characters who are dog-coded, but characters who are a specific type of dog-coded. Join me for a moment:
Working Dog-Coded: Give me a job and a purpose, then reward me with affection and I will follow you to the end of time, space and beyond.
Guardian Breed-Coded: I'm not a big fan of people and don't need many friends. I just need one person, or a small tight-knit group, to protect and that will fulfill me until the end of my days.
Terrier-Coded: I get us into a lot of problematic situations, talk a bunch of shit and often take on people who are a lot bigger than me. But, that's okay because I know you've always got my back.
Mutt-Coded: I'm not really sure who I am and don't have the greatest sense of self, but if you give me support and space to figure it out, I'll be loyal to you until my last breath.
Shelter-Dog Coded: This isn't where I thought I'd end up. I've been through it. My past might be complicated, but I'm trying, and you're giving me the chance I so desperately need to go at life one more time.
These are just the first ones that came to mind, and characteristics overlap here and there. Feel free to add your own!
The insolent beaft herself
Alright, I got a little challenge for you.
Say you got to reimagine spinner's design and abilites granted from his quirk to be more based around actual geckos.
What gecko species would you use as inspiration for his design? It doesn't have to be just one speices either, you can use multiple and make a composite design if you want.
And furthermore, what abilities would you give him? You don't have to make them a complete 1-to-1 of how real gecko adaptations work, suspension of disbelief is par for the course in the superpower genre after all, but the abilities do have to be based on the the real life abilities of actual geckos to a reasonable degree.
Alright, with the rules set, good luck.
I think his design is fine. I’d just give him a tail.
Like, clearly the author really likes ninja turtles. Okay. But the tail tho. That's the best part of a reptile. Lots of MHA characters who could have tails, don't. I think the author just doesn't like drawing tails.
As far as his powers? All of them. If there is any sort of special ability I could conceive a lizard person having, he’s fucking got it.
He’s going to be like a cross between Mirio and Tsuyu except as a villain.
Mirio’s claim is that there’s no weak quirks. That’s obviously nonsense, but Spinner is going to benefit from the same gains Mirio did.
Tsuyu can just do whatever the author feels like and her tongue is blatantly a tentacle and doesn’t function like a frog’s tongue at all, so it’s whatever. If it’s good enough for her, it’s good enough for Spinner.
What I think the story objectively loses is representation for people born with crap quirks, but maybe we actually stick with the idea that working hard can make any quirk good.
You know how Koichi is pushed into situation and then he develops more ways to use his quirk?
That’s Spinner.
He starts off with just the ability to be sticky and climb things. It’s tiring to do it. But he never actually worked out or trained in his life.
That changes when he gets into fights. Oh, sweet, then he unlocks a low grade super strength. Oh, then his scales harden and deflect blades.
I’m using the logic that winning fights gives you EXP in the MHA universe like a Pokemon game. It’s the only way I can explain Toga kicking so much ass despite her lack of real training, not having an offensive quirk, and zero apparent muscle mass.
So we spend several arcs where Shigaraki goes “Spinner, I choose you!” And then he cuts up pro heroes.
So that’s why I said all of them. If Spinner is getting his ass kicked, suddenly he’ll go “Oh yeah, what if I did THIS!” and then he does it.
Like, he straight up just fires blood from his eyes to blind someone, then he cuts them.
I’m fully aware this is a horned lizard technique. But since we give the hero characters endless training arcs and power ups and buffs, during a brutal beat down, Spinner would flash back to Dabi’s micro aggressions and how he called him lizard repeatedly even after being corrected.
And then he’d think “Wait. That’s my quirk. I’m not just a gecko: I’m a LIZARD!”
I’m aware you wanted to know how he’d use a gecko quirk to be strong, but if we’re going to have Bakugo go from getting 1 shot by Tomura to being able to kill AFO, then yeah, Spinner’s gonna get buffed.
However, since you do want to see Gecko specific moves, he’s got this:
The Tail Drop: So he has a tail in this world. He can drop it. It hurts really, really badly to do so and the tail wildly flails around to distract and bowl people over as it spasms. It also gives him a massive adrenaline based movement buff and also he’s faster because he lost his tail and the weight it contained. Think of this like Rock Lee dropping his weights.
Before that, he’d use the tail in his martial arts.
Van der Waals Strength: Geckos stick to walls using microscopic hairs on their toe pads that manipulate intermolecular forces. So in this universe, he’d grab someone and his grip is unbreakable. He’d use this to pound people across the face with wild haymakers and they can’t get knocked back or fall away from him.
Leaf-Tail Camouflage: Some geckos, like the Mossy Leaf-Tailed Gecko, have dermal flaps that completely eliminate their shadows, making them practically invisible against surfaces. So Spinner would press himself against a wall, and then bend light around his body so nobody can see him unless they physically bump into him. Remember: If Tsuyu gets a stealth mode that objectively makes her a better version of Hagakure for no reason, Spinner should get this.
You may wonder why Spinner has all of this.
I’ll tell you.
Class 1-A is 20 people. Class B is also 20 people.
Tomura is Izuku and Bakugo’s villain. Dabi is Shoto’s. Toga is Uraraka and Tsuyu’s. Compress and Twice aren’t assigned to any of the hero kids.
That leaves Spinner here to make up the numbers. Now, just for a moment, examine the League's quirks and fighting styles and you'll figure out the hole the author wrote himself into: on paper, everyone here should absolutely rip children to shreds. Dabi and Tomura's powers by all rights should be one hit kills. Toga is a serial killer who stabs people. Compress' power is a one touch victory for him, and if he fights at a distance, he's going to throw boulders and potentially vehicles at you. Twice can make copies of all his friends who have one touch kill abilities. So that just leaves Spinner as the one 'safe' guy people can fight. Having his sword get broken is a major gift to the narrative because now it means we can turn him getting disarmed and then boxing people up into a common combat routine.
I want you to think about the fact that we see constant training arcs from the hero children...but they barely actually DO anything with their powers.
Who, for example, has Sero ever actually fought outside of a movie besides his own friends in class events?
Enter: Spinner. If the story wants us to take the League seriously, then we show Spinner is un-jumpable. Meaning, you can attack him with 8 dudes and he fights them all off. Also, consider his personality: He actively did not want Izuku dying in the first arc. That means, if we CHOOSE to use it, Spinner could be the one guy in the league with actual morals! Which means, he's the one guy who actively WILL NOT MURDER his child opponents! Then the narrative needs zero justification for why he flattened groups of kids and didn't kill them! No last minute rescues, no having him carry the idiot ball. A group of students spots him while on patrol and he's buying food from the 7-11, they jump him, he reverse jumps them, and then leaves them laying and escapes. THEN, we can have this happen again when the kids get their run back after a training arc! But then we'll have buffed Spinner to keep him competitive because he's getting jumped by half the cast and needs anything to keep his head above water.
We give the fodder characters in Class 1-A something to do and Spinner is finally allowed to do something.
Like, the state of villains is so bad in canon that the major antagonists who supposedly brought hero society to their knees...most of them have never actually boxed up the main cast for any length of time. That's ridiculous.
Casting spells over long range: I use my amulet
Casting spells with high quality and fidelity: I use my fmulet

casting spells in the present tense: I use my amulet
casting spells in the past tense: i use my wasulet

NGL if I was a parahuman I would NOT self-actualize and recover from my trauma. I'm going full steam ahead losing myself to a false mask to hide from my own inadequacies and dying within 3 months of getting my power.
so humans live about 70 years on average, but does within civilization count as "in captivity" or "in the wild"?
I hear they're making a show about a catgirl who smokes and has no hygiene and is a complete loser slob with a nasty lifestyle. I'm not into that myself but it matches my model of what people on here are extremely interested in.
"I'm still kicking" is such a funny way to say "I'm still alive". Like lol. I'm still thrashing. Flailing. Writhing even. The violence remains.
Like a vampire in her coffin...
