i literally love that seasons one and two are about two brothers getting reacquainted and getting to know each other as people for maybe the first time. but also dean knows exactly which alias sam would use with a random phone company and sam doesn’t know dean is afraid of flying

Castiel gets out of The Empty four years too late.

Castiel hovers in the doorway of the den, aching. There’s an open bottle of whiskey and a cut-glass tumbler on the coffee table, alcohol long evaporated and a sticky ochre ring along the bottom. Beside it he can see a piece of paper, torn from a notepad and laid parallel to the glass. Tucked neatly under the table are Dean’s slippers. Carefully, Castiel leans over and peers down at the note. In Sam’s neat handwriting it reads:

“What?” Claire answers on the second ring. Castiel snatches the phone up and presses it to his ear, joy bursting inside him.

“Claire,” he says, voice watery. “It’s me.”

“Uh, who’s me?” She asks, sarcastic.

“It’s Castiel,” Castiel says.

Claire laughs, and then barks, “Fuck off.” And then she hangs up.

#john DOESN'T ask anyone for help! #and i don't think his deal absolves him of that #if anything it further cements why he should have #like - what if there was another way? like in faith? #and it's so awful how john “”“”apologizes“”“” to dean before his death #like!!! he may very well feel some regret abt how he raised dean and how he used him for support #but he wouldn't be saying it unless he needed that as leverage #which - he knows he does! #he is manipulating dean #as his FINAL act #so so true OP - he is BUTTERING HIM UP and it's disgusting to watch #like even as he apologizes for doing these things he is also reminiscing fondly on them #because he isn't sorry Enough about parentifying and in some ways plain adultifying dean #for those memories to bring feelings of shame or painful regret #just wistful vague remorse mingled with nostalgia #he misses when little child dean would hug and reassure him! #he doesn't seem to feel very bad about putting dean in that situation#only that he had taken that “maturity” (traumatic response to parental distress) to mean dean was ready to learn hunting #i am getting in the weeds here #john isn't sorry for what he did and if he was he'd deliver it differently and not on his deathbed in advance of demanding an awful favor

and it really got me thinking. like especially the part about john's "reminiscing fondly" and the "wistful vague remorse mingled with nostalgia" fucking HIT ME. because that is such a good articulation of the tone of that scene.

AND it got me wondering if part of that wistful, nostalgic, fondness was john picturing how it would feel for dean to be caring for him like that... even now. how comforting it might feel to return to that familiar pattern, receive that familiar care.

dean spent much of his childhood caring for his dad - his emotions, his injuries after hunts, etc. john is essentially on his deathbed here. maybe a part of him wish it could be easy like it used to feel, for dean to "put [his] hand on [john's] shoulder and... look [john] in the eye and say 'It's okay, Dad.'"
