Joan Didion, The Year of Magical Thinking
baiikaā:
It clicked: Sui Feng was being antagonistic to be antagonistic. Momo had done her due diligence, the rest was on Sui Fengās shoulders.
Tobacco smoke billowed from her pipe. She turned her gaze off the porch, watching their officers march and swing. She could feel tension in the air. Competition, disdain. Gobantai was looked down on by niibantai.
Ordinarily, Momo wouldnāt care. She wasnāt competitive, but seeing how her officers were treated, she changed her mind. She wasnāt about to allow her division to be the butt end of those jerks.Ā āCaptain, what did you expect? Gobantai offered you a gift of our own making, and instead of graciously accepting like anyone with basic decency, you instead accuse us of corruption.ā
āTsk tsk tsk, I believe I accused your Captain, not your whole squad. Look at them, after all.ā Her arm fanned out over the precipice of the viewing platform towards the yard.
Goading the growth of independence between the squads was good. Useful, even. Hostility was a wonderful tool to drive improvement. But as in all poisons, if too concentrated, it loses its practical use. The Squad had come into her territory, a rare move. And performed well. A rarer move. Perhaps....
āYou canāt blame me for vetting your kindness and claims. If you disagree, you are wrong. Factually.ā Her eyes shut, as though bracing for an incoming hit no one else could dodge but her. āBut. Iāll cede this time, your sentiment is noted. And for what its worth....it stands a downright acceptable olive brance, if I recall correctly.ā
(softly) Sousuke Aizen is too scared to eat pussy
āJust keep walking, I cannot unhear that...ā

Sui Feng was intimidating. Momo refused to let her discomfort on, however.
She bowed politely. "Thank you for allowing gobantai to use your facilities for this joint exercise, Captain." She extended a patterned box. "An olive branch."

death-in-two-stepsā:
Her head cocked to the side, tracing her fingers down the edges of the box, her intrigue at the sentiment hidden behind a face still stern and voice still cold.Ā āTell me. Your Captain, skilled as he might be, lacks the decorum I would expect from his station. So was it his idea to bribe the SÅshireikan of the Onmitsukido on her own territory?ā
With that final line her eyes shot left, her form tense and stiff betraying the clear momental shift in the tone. Her fingers had stopped their journey, hovering above the crest of the Squad on the piece in her hand as if anticipating a move.
Momo pulled her pipe from her robes. She struck a match. āYou know my captain isnāt so wretched,ā she said. She ought to appreciate Sui Fengās skepticism, yet she encountered distrust daily. Sousuke Aizenās mistress never escaped scrutiny. It was exhausting.
āIāll give you reasons why this would make a shitty fucking bribe.ā Momo paused to puff smoke. So much for endearing Sui Feng. At least nibantaiās captain had her looks and her talent going for her. That was twice was Momo had. āI sewed and dyed it myself. The fabric was only spun five months ago. No history, no fame. Only a gift of good will.ā
Her piercing eyes were unblinking as she took in the rebuttal, each word seeming to glance off her like swords against steel. Until, at least, the words stopped, and the slightest smirk crept to the edge of her lips.Ā
āLieutenant Hinamori, raising your tone to such a level against a Captain is highly ill advised. I had not expected it from someone such as you. Do you speak to all your betters that way?ā For her life, Feng could not recall a Shinigami going on the offensive towards her, much less in her own territory, on her own terms. Too much civility. Antagonism bred better soldiers, better Shinigami. To cultivate that, no matter how miniscule, could be for the better. If she got a kick out of it along the way, who was she hurting?
This is the Japanese Hornet, or Suzumebachi. In the highly unlikely scenario you encounter one, run as fast as you can Ā n.n
ā Turn around for but a moment and only an afterimage remains withal.Ā ā

She hummed. āYes.ā A lie. The fact of it was that Momo was scared of Sui Feng, and Momo got angry when she was scared. Shinji would be mad if she did something to land herself in jail again. The easiest way to temper their temperaments seemed like making Sui Feng endeared in Momoās heart.
She did it once with Sousuke, she could do it again.
āIām afraid itās only a replica, but itās the coat of our founder. Itās a very pretty piece,ā she said.

āItās something of a shock that another Squad would approach us about this at all. I was almost pleased to oblige.ā Her eyes didnāt leave the field, darting between the forms moving beneath their perch. Only after a moment of silence did he gaze shift to the side, an eyebrow raising towards the gesture as she took it in hand. āHow unorthodox. A gobantai tradition?ā

Pseudosphex laticincta, a moth of the Pseudosphex genus known for its mimicry of a wasp. It is classified as a daytime flying species and evolved to resemble its predators. P. laticincta can be best distinguished from a wasp by its larger, pectinate antennae and noticeable proboscis. Photo credit: Hannes Freitag.
- People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for. If you wish to move forward in this world you have been thrown, you must see what is not there for your eyes, hear what is not meant for your ears. -
āĀ i guess weāre stuck here,Ā now.Ā ā he said leaning back on the cell wall of where ever they were being held. āAny plans to escape?āhe asked her curiously.
"Have you tried beating the walls down? I don't recall you putting much thought into plans before, so that seems the logical place to start." The Captain sat to the substitutes opposite, legs crossed and eyes shut as she responded, her senses as open as could be to any avenue forwards. Of all the people to get hurled into the dark with, she got the prodigal lout, just perfect. A slight shift in the noise through the stonework around them perked her ears up, a half crack in her eyelid to see if anything had changed. It hadn't. Just the orange across from her, strangly calm in such a harrowing position. Wasn't he stressed about the implication of failure? Of his inability to complete the mission? What weighs on his mind if not the objective?
