Yeah! This is a problem with history: we have a tendency to assume people in the past were less creative, less silly, less imaginative, less weird, less artistic.

Nope. Humans have been Humans for hundreds of thousands of years. They did silly things because it was funny. They told stories about dragons not because they seriously believed dragons existed, but because dragons are awesome and Little Timmy loves the story with the dragon and the brave knight. They drew that horse into a hill not as a memorial to the grim and serious Horse God, but because WOW THAT'S A PRETTY HORSE DRAWING!

But too often we end up looking at history through this lens of "there must be a serious explanation" and forget the explanation might just be "this was a funny meme they had"
