I posted this video to FB a couple of days ago and it managed to have 150+ shares and a reach of nearly 80,000 so far, so I thought my Tumblr friends might enjoy it. [NOTE: Turn up your volume. The severe amount of negativity I’ve seen over the past week has been taking such an intense toll on me, so I had to step a bit out of my comfort zone and speak up in video form against it.

I got up early and wrote the script right before heading to see a friend who helped me film it. It’s hard to do nine minutes in one take, so pardon my fumbles as they happen. I’m especially ashamed that I froze on one of the quotes which is actually the background on my phone and something I recite often.

Anyway, watch if you wish. I’m sure not everyone will love it, but I just hope that some might come away a tiny bit more compassionate for it. If I do lose followers for this, just know that I’ll miss you, and I wish you the best.

After a fantastic shoot at SDCC with thatblackwidowgirl and friend-whose-tumblr-I-don't-know it occurs to me that I've never watched the show. So I'm going to, seeing as how the editing computer is occupied for the next couple of hours, I've got some time. And I've decided to live blog it, because that seems fun, and I've never done one before. So here goes.

California Gothic:

They wring out the water from the land like a sponge and sell it back to you like you will not notice. The factories churn endlessly, even when they are closed you still hear them in your dreams. You wake to find you are thirsty. Parched. Just like the land.

There are those who do not go to the beach, they do not go and make penance in the waves. They turn their nose up at the sand and surf. And still, if you look in the deepest corners of their closet, there is a crumpled towel. Turn it out and you will find sand.

The orchards and vineyards stretch on and on. But if you look you can see the end of them. No, further. Further. Keep looking.

It’s so sunny and bright. So very sunny. There is so much sun. The sun is everywhere. You close your eyes and you can still see it. There is no reprieve in the night, and in the winter the sun does not die, but transforms.

No one drives at five o’clock. You do not make plans to travel at five o’clock because you all know you do not drive at five o’clock. And yet the streets are filled with endless cars droning, driving, dangerous, filled with faceless drivers that you do not know because no one drives at five o’clock.

Someone tells you they want to come to California. You’re compelled to tell them not to, to tell them about the long stretches of highway that are never deserted, how we are drinking ourselves dry, about the the sun that does not rest, but you keep quiet. You do not know why but you do.

Everyone is trying to get into California. You look around and you do not know why. You wonder what it is they see when they look at California. You do not want to know what they see when they look at you.

The desert and the palms and the beach whisper fantasies, they draw you in, and then
