Together time after time...
Honest (SPOILER) thoughts regarding the GO finale, I think a valuable piece of writing people are kinda overlooking is the INCREDIBLE subversion of their main motivations
Like we as the audience are lead to believe from the start that Crowley is this jaded, cynical little fucker who’s fond of one person and one person only. The typical “nothing in this world matters except you” grumpy who doesn’t give a shit about a universe that rejected him. Aziraphale, likewise, is pretty easily seen as the bigger picture guy, it’s obvious he loves Crowley deeply but it’s the mission of the larger world, the good of the people, that draws his time and energy- he chooses that responsibility more than Crowley. These are the roles we’ve seen them play and the archetypes we’ve kinda locked them in to. It matches with their grumpy vs sunshine attitudes, their aesthetics etc
Then in s2 we started noticing some cracks in it. We’ve met Angel Crowley who is a beautiful sunshiny dreamer who cares so deeply about the gorgeous world around him. Aziraphale starts to get a bit wrapped up in his own self interest from time to time, caring more about his bookshop or Crowley or even Jim than his larger mission. These little moments added depth to their characters, but ultimately didn’t shake our ideas of them. But THEN-
When they were asked by God what they would save, everything in the world has been stripped from them. The universe is lost- all that remains is each other and the final question of “what in the whole of existence matters to you most?” And we think we know what they’ll say, we think the way we’ve been taught all this time- Crowley is the selfish lover and Aziraphale is the heartbroken rejector.
But instead we meet their cores. We meet the truest stripped down versions of themselves and we learn the truth. Aziraphale picks Crowley. His lover, his life, the being that completes him. He makes the selfish, or loving, choice, no matter what it means to the world. And Crowley- Crowley is crying for the world. He is so utterly helplessly desperate for humanity to have their chance that he’s willing to throw away everything out of his sheer love for them. We’ve met the old part of him again, the artist and the lover, the selfless one he’s had within him all along. And for Aziraphale we’ve finally met the lover in him too, the one who’s finally willing to put his love for Crowley above all else.
I don’t know but I think it’s absolutely beautiful to get to know characters that you thought had these black and white motivations, only to discover that when it all comes down to it, they are capable of throwing everything we assumed about them out the window. There’s no black and white or even grey, but a whole world of mixed up colours and choices that make them whole. The sinful Angel and the selfless demon to the last.
It's such a shame that we didn't get to see Crowley's journey back to that generous, curious starmaker. A full season could have shown us more of what he did on earth, because for the record I didn't believe he watched Aziraphale go up and then curled up in the alleyway. I think he may have made friends or at least observed humanity and drawn some of the philosophical conclusions his Book counterpart contemplated at the beginning of everything. "The highest grace and most heart stopping evil are both in the human mind" that's lifted straight from the book. Crowley wasn't OOC by making the choice he did, the narrative just didn't have time to let us soak it in.
It Starts with Us
Our Universe exists because of them.
We know their story. We have their love. We are their Book of Life in this Universe and we will give them so many happy endings.
The fact that some people might look down on this simple human life makes me a bit sad. As if it's not enough. As if it's not something magical and fantastic already. As if Aziraphale and Crowley didn't fight for it for 6000 thousand years! To find each other despite all the odds. To live together, explore the world together, die together. To choose each other every time. That seems to be the whole point doesn't? Freedom to live and love. Even if it's a small life.
I love them!!!
Also professor and astrophysicist Anthony J Crowley loved Project Hail Mary and cried his eyes out 😌
All Right Listen Up
I'm not going to talk about the finale exactly, but actually I'm going to talk about the finale. Sit your asses down for some truth bombs.
*clears throat*
The human race is worth saving. Humanity has intrinsic value and is worth saving.
I genuinely believe that a good chunk of the animosity towards the ending is that we're not really sure of that these days. And I get it. Things are really bad on the surface, and we don't know how to make it better.
But listen. The people fucking up our world are few. There are like ten assholes working together to fuck us over, and there are billions of us. And the billionaires are mortal. The systems they've created and manipulated to gain power are temporary. Humanity doesn't have to be. Art doesn't have to be. Whimsical costumes and bedtime stories and fairies and unicorns, those things can go on forever if we decide that they should. Billionaires die. Oppressive religious hierarchies die. Imagination doesn't, and neither does love.
And THAT is the theme of Good Omens. A theme that they brought home in the last minutes of the finale.
Humanity is worth saving, and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise.
my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government
this is getting really popular so i’d like to add the important caveat that your criticism of a work is no more unassailable than the work itself. just as one is entitled to be critical of something someone else is entitled to disagree with that criticism. i add this because some of you pretend to give a fuck about thoughtful analysis and then when someone points out flaws in your argument you declare that all criticisms are valid. this is untrue. the status of a hater is no more sacred than that of a liker. get off your high horse and engage in the thoughtful discussion you pretend to believe in or perish by my blade

I deadass think steve rogers ending was character assassination and conservative rhetoric (send the progressive man back to the decade epitomes with traditional values for a white picket fence life) but it was also just cruel to steve and bucky. “oh ur just mad ur ship didn’t go canon” no im mad the friendship that was the most important thing in both of their lives was tossed aside and the audience was gaslit into believing it didn’t matter despite three films proving otherwise. steve dropped the shield twice for bucky and would have died rather than live in a world where bucky didn’t remember him. bucky broke thru 70 years of brainwashing at the sound of steve’s voice. their catchphrase was essentially “til death do we part”. the fuck
marvel for ten years: these guys have been best friends since they were six (w steve having no one but bucky after his mom died). their bond is unbreakable and they would die for each other. steve doesn’t believe in ever turning a blind eye to injustice and would sacrifice his body time and time again to do what’s right
endgame: after bucky comes back from the dead steve says “see ya” to his best friend and his morals
i don't know if this counts as a conspiracy theory but I'm convinced that the ONLY reason they did that to cap was to erase any possibility in fans' minds of Stucky becoming canon.
Worth Remembering
I think @dalliancekay is the only person I've seen acknowledge this on a regular basis, but it's very important when discussing the characters' motivations: Crowley is just as trapped by circumstance as Aziraphale. It's easy to treat his fall like a metaphor for being kicked out of one's home or transitioning, but it's more like bring extradited from one shitty prison to another, slightly shittier one. He has a fair amount of autonomy in season one bc Satan likes his work, but in season two we see Beelzebub drag him to hell and threaten him, and Shax can show up in his car and fuck with him at will. They're not going to be safe if Aziraphale "catches up" or follows Crowley or "realizes that Crowley was right," because Crowley isn't in a better place than him. Falling didn't magically imbue Crowley with an abundance of common sense that Aziraphale lacks. Cynicism isn't inherently correct.
Aziraphale's go-to solution is to confront the issue and talk to someone in charge. Crowley's is to look for an escape. Neither is completely right or completely wrong. And I realize that with *gestures at reality* it's tempting to assume that Crowley is right and "you can't change anything," but this story's ending was conceived by a man whose characters routinely re-alter reality through sheer force of will. His point was always and will always be that we need to believe that we can make a difference, and once we do then anything is possible.

I’ve seen people criticise Crowley in the trailer, saying that when he says „you can’t change anything“ he is acting out of character (since he has been the one to bring about change, to revel in it and to encourage the humans to it for centuries) and are afraid the finale is going to be horrible.
I don’t think it will be but just to ease your mind, I’m going to talk a bit more in detail about why I really don’t think that part of the trailer is ooc for him at all. I think he’s just talking about their conflict.
Aziraphale went to Heaven to „make a difference“. He WANTS to change things. He’s done talking to the people in charge, they don’t listen to him anyways. He’s going to BE the person that is in charge and he’s going to change Heaven just enough to save humanity.
But in Crowley’s mind, change is what humans do. He loves them for it. He loves their free will and their wildly creative fashion and the things they come up with to make life easier. Heaven doesn’t change (or barely does - we see them in different clothing at different times, like the robes during the job minisode, but… is that „change“ or is that „keeping up with the times because Gabriel says we have to (and because he loves human fashion too, deep down)“?). Crowley knows how rigid and colourless Heaven is and how it kills change at first sight. He’s experienced it, firsthand on himself and secondhand on Aziraphale, countless times, and he doesn’t believe Heaven can ever be changed even by Aziraphale’s stubborn goodness. He wants to get away while they still can and escape the entire sorry business to have at least a bit of time with Aziraphale before they’re killed.
That’s what they’re arguing about in the car. I’m 100% sure that the scene in which Aziraphale says „how could we have been happy, knowing we were leaving all these people to goodness knows what awfulness“ is the same scene in which Crowley says that he can’t change anything (same lighting, they’re in the car, etc.). Crowley is not acting out of character in that scene, he’s arguing with Aziraphale because of their two different ways of approaching the problem.
anyways, that’s a lot of words for something that seemed really simple to me when I watched the trailer but since I’ve seen people getting nervous about it, I thought I’d explain it a bit more. I hope you’re able to look forward to the finale as much as I am! (And really, even if it is bad, we have so many fanwriters there’s bound to be the perfect fanfiction for everyone. And even then it’s been practically confirmed that we will have kiss scenes for edits-material. Be not afraid. Lmao)
People are seriously saying he's acting out of character? That's so odd to me. I thought it was commonly assumed that Crowley's cynicism comes from him trying to changes things Before and things went very badly for him. That's why he didn't want Aziraphale to go back; he thought it was pointless and could only end very very badly for the angel.
And his perspective is valid but also incorrect. In Pratchett's worlds believing things makes them true, so if Crowley has faith in Aziraphale and in them they are going to succeed. Not the way they planned and in a way that will make everyone look ridiculous probably, but they will succeed.
