A/N: Densimber wouldn’t be complete without a hefty dose of angst. I hope you enjoy. This is set within the first couple of years of Kensi and Deeks’ relationship.
***
Careless Words
Deeks is pretty good at ignoring what other people think of him. He’s had most of his life to practice, after all. Normally, he has no problem defending himself if needed, or playing into inaccurate assumptions for his own benefit. If he can’t have respect, then he’ll enjoy proving everyone wrong.
Sometimes though, it hits a little deeper. Tonight is one of those times. He and Kensi are out with a friend from her cardio class and another couple he’s never met before. There’s already a slightly awkward tinge to the conversation and somehow, it’s drifted into various surface-level anecdotes.
“Deeks has always been a little sensitive,” Kensi says after sharing a fairly embarrassing story. She nudges his shoulder, clearly looking for approval as the other people at the table laugh at his expense.
Just laugh along, he tells himself, but he can’t ignore the slightly cruel edge to Kensi’s voice. Or the sense that he’s once again being pushed out in favor of a relative stranger.
Still, Deeks manages to play along for the rest of the outing. He’s a little more quiet than usual, but everyone else is just drunk enough to not notice and fill in for his silence.
When they finally get home, Kensi stubbles just a little on her way to the front door, grabbing onto Deeks’ arm for support.
“What’s going on with you?” she asks, leaning on him. “You’ve been weird most of the night. Caroline kept asking if you were sick or didn’t like er.
“I’ve just been thinking,” Deeks says vaguely.
“Well, that explains the smell.” She snort-laughs. When he doesn’t join in, Kensi pushes back, and squints at him. “Why do you look so annoyed?”
“Sorry, I’ll try to keep better control of my emotions. Wouldn’t want you to think I’m too sensitive again.” It’s petty, but he feels a little better throwing her words back in her face. Yeah, that’s definitely petty.
Kensi looks confused for a second, then rolls her eyes and signs once realization hits.
“Baby, you know I was joking about that, right.”
“Oh yeah, it was hilarious. I didn’t realize it was an opinion you needed to share with new acquaintances, but then again, you’ve always had a different sense of humor than me.”
“That’s kind of rude,” she says playfully.
“Yeah, so is criticizing me in front of people we just met under the guise of a joke,” Deeks retorts.
Sighing again, Kensi presses a hand to her cheek. They’ve both been drinking. He should probably leave this until a better. Until the sting has worn off and he convinces himself he doesn’t care.
“You have to admit sometimes you can be…I don’t know, a little overly emotional.” Kensi waves her hand at him. “You like to talk about everything and usually lead with your heart and all that.”
And that’s the proverbial straw.
“Right, you think I’m too soft. Just like everyone thinks I’ll be the weak link when it comes down to it.” He laughs, hating how bitter he sounds right now. This is not how he saw the night going at all, yet somehow he can’t stop the words from pouring out of him. “I guess you’d prefer it if I leaned into my darker side, huh? If I acted more like my dad or Max.”
Kensi recoils as if the words physically hurt her. “Of course I don’t,” she says, more seriously than anything else she’s said the whole night. Suddenly, she looks completely sober. “Deeks, that’s not what I meant at all. I just—” She stops abruptly, her inability to finish confirming what Deeks has been feeling for the last three hours.
Brushing his hair out of the way, he looks beyond Kensi. “You know how hard I’ve worked to not be like that,” Deeks catches her eyes, having to look away again when he sees the glimmer of tears in her eyes. “Yeah, I overthink things and talk too much, but I thought by now you understood or I don’t know, maybe even secretly liked it.”
“I do,” she whispers.
“Then why? Why even say it.”
“I don’t know.” Kensi shrugs, looking like she might actually cry. “It’s habit? I guess I didn’t realize it would bother you that much.” Reaching out, she grabs his arms, pleading now. “I’m sorry, Deeks. I shouldn’t have said it.”
“Yeah, it’s a little too late for that, isn’t it?”
“Deeks, what does that mean?” Kensi whispers, sounding scared now.
“I don’t know. But I, uh, I think I need some space,” he says, slowly releasing Kensi’s hold. “I think I’m gonna go for a walk.”
“Deeks, don’t. Baby, let’s talk about it some more.”
“I’ll be back.” He walks away, not sure where he’s head, and a deep, heavy ache in his chest.

Holding On
He just needed to hold on a little longer. Stay quiet. Not reveal himself. A few more minutes. Then someone would come. Deeks repeated this mantra to himself, focusing on the individual words to distract himself from the pain and resist the urge to lay down.
Dipping his chin, Deeks lifted his wadded up jacket. Underneath it, his shirt was soaked through with blood, the fabric slightly stiff, but not enough to indicate his wound had stopped bleeding.
A simple check-in with an informant had turned into a guy attacking him with a knife. Deeks assumed his attacker was working with their current bad guy. Not that it really mattered at this point since Deeks had won the fight. Well, won it from the perspective that the other guy was dead. A stab wound to the stomach didn’t exactly feel like winning.
His phone had smashed in the fight and of course he wasn’t on comms. Deeks could only hope the emergency signal he’d tried to send had actually gone through.
He trusted Eric to use his wizard magic. He trusted Kensi to move heaven and earth to find him.
If he could just hang onto that, he’d be ok.
A shiver ran through him, followed by a dull chill. That wasn’t good.
Closing his eyes, Deeks pictured Kensi. This morning she’d smelled like cucumber melon body wash when they made out in the shower before work. She’d laughed when he mentioned they’d be late, pulling him back under the stream of warm water. Her lips were soft on his.
Deeks smiled softly, just a little twitch of his lips at the memory. It had been a good morning.
“Deeks! Oh my god, Baby, can you hear me?”
With some effort, Deeks pulled himself out of the memory, his eyes opening enough to see Kensi leaning over him. Her hands ran over him, pressing over the balled up jacket hard enough to make it hurt again.
“I knew you’d come,” he whispered.

Finally having a minute to herself, Nell found Kensi waiting for her in the restroom. It was a surprise. Kensi was sitting on the bench by the mirrors with the nurse's uniform semi-folded on her lap.
"Hiding from Deeks? Hetty? The world?" Nell asked Kensi as she was washing her hands after taking care of business.
"Callen and Hetty fighting wasn't something I ever saw coming."
Sitting on the bench with Kensi, Nell agreed. "I don't remember Callen ever yelling in the office."
"Me neither."
"And you've been here long than I've been."
"Is that an old shot?" Kensi joked.
"No, never,' Nell shook her head. "So why are you here?"
"I just wanted you to know that Deeks and I don't usually behave that way."
"Ha!" escaped from Nell, who immediately put her hands over her mouth.
"What was that?"
"You and Deeks behave that way all the time."
"That is the first time Deeks and I ever wrestled."
"I'm not interested in your personal life."
"Nell Jones!"
"You do know you and Deeks are on comms most days."
"So you know we don't wrestle."
"Physically, no but you two are always going at each other. Last week while you were staking out that office building downtown, you made Deeks come up with punk rocker musicians and list them alphabetically."
"He thinks he knows so much about music."
"And he does know his punk performers. That was a big win for me."
"A win for you?"
"When you two start going back and forth about things like top breakfast fruits, Eric and I place an occasional wager. He's taking me to "Iron Man 3" next week and then we're going to Fogo de Chao – he's paying."
"You are gambling on Deeks and me."
"Yes. I always take Deeks for pop culture, books and LA based things, you on weapons, non-LA geography and food. Last month's movies with knives had me stumped because I knew you'd be fine with the knives but not necessarily the movies. I decided to pass."
"Smart. I figured a movie called "Lethal Weapon" would have a knife."
"And you agreed early that sequels don't count – that was your mistake. "Lethal Weapon 2" has a knife being thrown at Riggs."
"Which one is Riggs?"
"That's why I didn't take Eric's bet. And I do know you two don't physically wrestle. Verbally, though…"
"He never shuts up."
"I know, Eric and I listen along," Nell said, patting Kensi's knee before standing. "I need to get back. And Hetty is going to want her nurse's uniform."
"True. Deeks and I carpooled this morning. I'm going to have a half-hour ride home with him complaining about the janitor's uniform."
"Shave and a haircut, he can be Dr. Deeks. Wow that sounds weird."
"He was born from the janitor's uniform."
"Maybe he'll sleep on the ride home – what with all the wrestling that you two never do."
"Good night, Nell."
A/N: Did someone ask for another silly dialogue drabble?

Sam: So, how’d you two handle last night?
Kensi, confused: What are you talking about?
Sam, sighing: The earthquake. It knocked a few dishes out of the cabinets.
Callen, wryly: Fortunately for me, I have very few belongings.
Kensi: I didn’t feel any earthquake last night.
Deeks, clearing his throat: We were a little, uh, occupied.
Sam, after a moment to process: No. You did not miss an entire earthquake because you were having sex. Kensi, you freak out over the tiny ones.
Kensi, awkwardly smoothing her hair back: I had a very good distraction.
Callen, shrugging: Well, there’s worse ways you could die.

The In-Law
“They should be here any minute,” Rosa said, looking beyond Deeks, in the direction of the entrance. “Steven says they got stopped by a red light.”
“That’s ok,” Deeks assured her, gesturing around the restaurant. “It’s pretty busy, so we’ll probably have to wait anyway.”
After officially dating for three months (following nearly two months of being “just friends”), Rosa had agreed to let Kensi and Deeks meet Steven’s mom. The event had come with a good amount of back and forth between Rosa and Steven over details, worrying if everyone would like the food, and so forth. They finally settled on a Mexican restaurant both kids approved of and had an open table for five.
“You know, I thought we’d never meet either of Steven’s parents. He must be pretty important for all this secrecy.”
Rosa blushed, dipping her head. “I just didn’t want to rush things.”
“Uh-huh.”
“Baby, stop teasing her,” Kensi intervened.
“Thank you, Kensi.”
“You’re welcome. The teasing will come later, on the way home.”
“You two are awful,” Rosa complained without much heat.
“Which is how you know we love you,” Deeks teased. He grinned at Rosa’s unamused expression. He tried not to embarrass her too much, but occasionally, it was fun. Especially when it came to Steven, who Rosa clearly adored, despite her claims it was still casual.
“Shhh, here they come,” Rosa said, making a waving motion as she hushed them both and sat straighter.
“I wasn’t even talking!” Kensi protested.
Deeks turned to look, catching sight of Steven’s sandy blond hair first, then the woman standing slightly behind him. “Oh, you have got to be kidding me,” he muttered.
“What?” Kensi asked, but he didn’t have a chance to respond before Steven and Ellen Whiting, of all people, were within Kensi’s line of sight too. She had her hair down and wore casual clothes, but it was definitely her.
Standing, Rosa met Steven and Whiting a few feet away.
“No, this can’t be real. What are we going to do?” Kensi hissed.
“I don’t know, but they’re coming back, so try to act normal.”
“Mrs. Hardy, these are my parents, Kensi and Marty,” Rosa said as she returned with Steven and Whiting. She smiled nervously, clinging to Steven, who looked equally anxious.
“Well, look what the cat dragged in,” Whiting drawled, looking at them with a mixture of amazement and annoyance. “Thought I was seeing things when Rosa pointed you out.”
“Good to see you too, Whiting,” Deeks said wryly.
“Wait, you know each other?” Rosa asked in obvious confusion.
“Oh, that’s one way of putting it.”
Whiting made a face at that, but before she could expound on her and Deeks’ past encounters, Kensi spoke up.
“It’s nice to see you, Ellen. Please, sit down.”
Soon after everyone was situated, a waiter came to take their orders, and Rosa and Steven began to visibly relax.
“So, where did you and mom meet?” Steven asked, twisting a balled up straw paper between his fingers. “I didn’t think you handled criminal law.”
“I used to be a detective,” Deeks explained shortly.
“And I worked in law enforcement too,” Kensi added.
“And I arrested Deeks once.” Whiting smiled at Deeks’ glare and Steven and Rosa’s twin looks of shock. “Just kidding.”
“Yeah, your mom’s just a barrel of laughs. I’ve always said that about her.”
“Baby, play nice,” Kensi said warningly.
“Sorry.” He cleared his throat sharply. “So, I’m guessing Whiting is your maiden name.”
“I changed my name to Hardy after I got married but kept Whiting professionally. It’s easier to keep the parts of my life separate,” Whiting answered. “When we talked about kids that last case we had together, I never imagined my kid would be dating yours.”
“It’s definitely a shocker.”
“Is that why you asked me about Steven’s last name?” Rosa wondered, narrowing her eyes at them.
“We thought there might be a slight chance,” Kensi explained. “We didn’t think there’d end up being a connection.”
“I think it’s cool.” Steven nodded happily, sharing a smile with Rosa. “Since you guys already know each other, it’ll be a lot less awkward getting together.”
“Maybe we can have Steven and Mrs. Hardy over for dinner sometime soon,” Rosa suggested.
“Oh, sure, of course. You know, if you’re available. We know how busy your schedule is.” Kensi chuckled awkwardly.
“I’m free this Saturday,” Whiting said with a familiar, biting smile.
“Awesome. I’ll make something special for dinner,” Rosa offered.
“Great.” Deeks purses his lips, forcing a smile of his own. “This is going to be fantastic.
