going on a girls trip! (me and my earphones to the supermarket)
what do you mean i'm not important? or that you're not important? the other day i stood and watched a tree all full of flowers shivering in the morning wind. i was the only one around. who else would have watched it dance? who else but you will notice the way the sun is slanting through your windows? how the rain scoops over your roof? the most important thing is to just exist, you see. by observing the world, we celebrate alongside it.
Itās almost Old Night and New Anus I canāt wait
iām realizing that i have so much time. i have time to grow my hair long. i have time to cut it all off and then to grow it back again. i have time to discover new hobbies and give up on things that no longer serve me. i have time to grow and change and travel and change my opinions and live differently than how i am now. i have so much time. take a deep breath and slow down
Things I have learned in todayās research binge:
All those old school Looney Tunes gags about randomly falling safes and pianos and such are actually based on something. Ā
Back when freight elevators werenāt a thing and hallways and staircases didnāt have legally mandated minimum widths (and therefore tended to be as narrow as the builders could get away with making them), the only way to deliver bulky furniture to the upper levels of tall buildings was to knock a hole in an exterior wall and raise the item up to it with a crane. Ā
Predictably, this led to the stupid things getting dropped from a height with fair frequency. Ā
In spite of this, there are no records of any case in which a random bystander has been crushed by a falling safe or piano. Ā
There is, however, at least one recorded case of a random bystander dying after walking straight into a hole left in the sidewalk by a safe that had fallen earlier that day.
Iām not sure why, but awful as it is, that last point may be one of the funniest things Iāve ever heard.
in between the morning coffee you need to find time to eat something healthy for breakfast so hopefully you prepared something the night before. on the commute over, are you listening to the right podcasts? are you taking the time to educate yourself? are you meditating on today's words of affirmation? in between the emails you have to send and the items you have to organize you have to find time to clean your apartment, the dishes are piling up again and you haven't taken out the trash yet. oh, right, you've been meaning to get your tires checked, you should make a note to check your tires soon. the problem is that you have been meaning to get back into journaling and you want to write down all your memories because your brain is a sieve and if you don't write it down you're going to forget it. speaking of which at some point today you need to get groceries. somewhere between work and dinner you need to find time to exercise. are you eating right? are you getting enough protein? walk the dog when you get home. listen to a book on tape that's kind of hard to get through. are you doing self care? did you remember to pick up your meds? you didn't order your new contacts yet, you need to order your new contacts or they'll be late coming in. did you save up enough money to order a new pair of glasses? will your insurance cover any of this. oh, while you're making dinner, don't forget, you promised you'd follow up with your friends. you promised! wait, did that email send? you haven't been able to find time to put up those shelves yet, jesus christ, this whole apartment is a mess. you need to do more creative things, don't you, otherwise you get depressed. find the time to do something creative per diem. other people can do this! you're just lazy and overwhelmed easily. your clothes are on the floor still, like a slob. you need to water your plants. find time to google all the needs of your plants so you don't kill them. oh, you need to make something healthy for breakfast or you're gonna end up eating something weird again. shit, you forgot to get groceries again. you need to get the tires checked. you've been having headaches, is that a symptom? you need to find time to clean the apartment - just 15 minutes! that's what everyone says! - but also remember that you're supposed to be doing yoga at this hour for wind-down time. make your hands busy. did you go to the gym? did you do something creative? are you breathing? are you even listening? this is easy for other people. this is just adulthood. this is just being a good person. holy shit other people can do this stuff. you still haven't watered your plants. get up, bitch!! get out of bed. you don't have time for this. you don't have your own time, at all. it's just this. running, heart hammering, hand to the door. don't be still, ever, you'll get stuck. stop resting, you don't have time. get up. get up. get up.
Hereās the thing - itās actually very much worth your time to go after what youāre dreaming of, regardless of how āunrealisticā it may seem in your (or other peoplesā) eyes. You might succeed. And if you donāt, it might lead you to a new passion. And if it doesnāt, you might find you grow from the experience of going after it. You have something to gain from giving it a shot.

āIf you give children a vocabulary thatās large enough and complex enough to express their emotions and their ideas, you give them access to complex feelings and emotions in themselves. So that if you talk to a teenager and all they can say about how they feel is BAD, and they havenāt got, you know, a larger vocabulary for lonely, abused, insecure, frightenedā¦I mean thereās this huge panoply whichā¦I remember when my daughter was just telling me that she just felt bad, I bought her a thesaurus. I said, āLook up, is it sort of over lonely, or is it insecureā¦and look up under lonely, youāll find two hundred words for lonely. Which one?ā But what that does is that it makes you feel that thereās this huge complexity of emotions and there are words for all of them. If you want children to feel less frustrated and less disenfranchised and less unable to even feel comfortable with their own emotions, youāll have to give them a vocabulary thatās as complicated as their inner lives. And one of the things we see in children is this incredibly reduced capacity for reporting their inner lives to the exterior world. One of the things is just teaching them poems, just teaching them to memorize poems in school, they donāt have to interpret them, if they just internalize the language of the poem, the complexity of the emotion in the poemsā¦ā -Jorie Graham, in a conversation
