Black Lives Matter, so Donate to their Fundraisers

Note: I will be updating this list on an ongoing basis for the next little bit. Please send links via this page or Facebook! 

There are many ways for non-Black folks to support Black Lives Matter at this time, as there has been from the moment the movement began (as well as, indeed, long before).  

One important way is to donate. For folks who have extra $$$ to spare, right now is as important as ever to contribute financially, to individuals struggling to pay their bills, to medical fees, to legal/bail funds, to funeral/memorial costs, to Black Lives Matter chapter organizations, and to healing spaces (to name a few). 

Here are some fundraisers I have found online you can donate to, organized by type of fundraiser. My goal is to ensure that both organizations and individuals get their coverage, that trans women, sex workers, folks with disabilities/chronic illnesses, folks experiencing abuse, single mothers, queer youth and seniors, undocumented folks, and folks surviving paycheque to paycheque (and so on) do not get forgotten. Please look for fundraisers whose goals have not yet been reached and donate if you can!

The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) has declared a state of Emergency in response to the out of the control forest fires that took over the city of Fort McMurray, AB from May 1 - 9, 2016 forcing a mandatory evacuation of 88,000 people, including hundreds of ACFN members. To date, the city remains closed and it is unknown when it will reopen leaving many people unsure of when, if at all, they will be able to return home. Today many of our members who have built lives in and around Fort McMurray have lost everything but the clothes on their backs. In order to support our members we will need all the support we can get, not just for immediate needs like food, water, medicine and shelter, but for the long term housing and jobs that have all been lost to this tragic fire. The ACFN is committed to rebuilding the homes and lives of our members to ensure a propserous future for everyone. Our members in the communities of Fort Chipewyan, Fort Smith, Edmonton and Calgary have opened their homes and lives to take in members while we work on a plan to assist the long transition back home. Hey, y'all! As most of you know, I’m currently without stable or safe housing and have been trying to find a place to stay for 4 months. Shan and I have made the decision to find a way to move in together in an area that is more affordable for living and has more community resources for our safety as Black non-binary queer folks.

Our decision is to move to Atlanta into an affordable apartment. In order for us to move together and not be tied to our current location, we have to clear some debt and pay to be able to move. Because we live paycheck to paycheck, and Shan’s current lease ends on April 30th - we need to find a means for capital that will not put us in more debt. [Also, Shan has found a job in Atlanta already and the position starts at the beginning of May. So it is urgent that we are able to make a smooth transition to Atlanta as soon as possible due to the time constraints along with our financial constraints.]
