chapter 6 prediction

i have a lot of feelings and thoughts about coelacanths today

like… they’re blue

you have this mysterious fish that  no one really cared about, because everyone assumed they’d gone extinct with the dinosaurs. an interesting footnote, but one of many, many fossil species. 

and later the coelacanth gets some fame as a so-called “missing link” species, a theory which is now outdated (and not accurate for coelacanths) but was really influential at the time. because they have some weird biological quirks – bones in fins! – people were like “oh, they must be a missing link.” so the coelacanth was launched into some fame with the theory of evolution. it got brought up a lot. drawn in old textbooks as proof.

and then a fisherman finds a weird fish off the coast of south africa and calls a local fish expert who had let it be known she was interested in weird finds, and he brings her the (unfortunately badly rotted) corpse and she’s like “well, this is sure weird,” and sends off the bones to other experts, who start to quietly freak out, and rush to south africa, and rewards are offered for another one, any other one, and a few years later one is caught and frozen before rotting.

and it’s this incredible discovery, this extinct creature come to life (the prehistoric coelacanth lived in swamps and marshes in south america; these now are deep ocean fish in and around the indian ocean, but it’s still recognizably the same species)!

but it’s also blue.

not like, muddy blue, or tumblr-default-background blue.

proper shimmering sapphire blue and white. almost turquoise in some lights. this like… muddy, fossil creature. always drawn in dinosaur browns and grays. and it’s alive and it’s blue. just imagine being the scientist who opened that crate to this creature for the first time. you’re already excited, you’ve known about this fish for decades, you thought it was a story, you know it’s in this box. you expect  to see the weird fins and the strange tail. you know it’s large and odd looking. and you open it up and it’s this beautiful, shining blue, you know?

it would suck being a new immortal. like it’d be 2109 and people would go, “what was it like seeing ancient civilizations rise and fall like that? seeing the pyramids being built? watching the expansion and growth of the new world?” and i’d just be like, “no…no i was born in 1991. so like, wow i’m gonna see some cool stuff, but, i mean i’m not that much older than just a really, really old person, you know? phones were big back then. so big. but only for like ten years, then they got like, as good as they are now. uh. rhinos existed. don’t think i ever saw one in person. cool, good talk.”

even worse, imagine being an immortal who keeps missing stuff. “What was it like seeing the pyramids being built?” “Fuck if I know, I was in Madagascar.” “Oh, okay. Well, how was the Renaissance?” “I fell down a hole in Scotland and people thought I was an enchanted well for four hundred years, it was over by the time I convinced someone to get me out.”

And now, a lesson in biases:

We barely know anything about Madagascar pre-500CE. We don’t even know whether the island had a permanent population before then, despite finding a bunch of much older signs of temporary human presence.

Malagasy mythology makes mention of the vazimba, a “precursor” ethnic group that might or might not be distinct from Madagascar’s current population.

The point is, we do not know.

So you were in Madagascar when the pyramids were being built in Egypt, i.e. during one of the most obscure, most undocumented parts of Madagascar’s human history?

Oh, buddy, you better go and make a bunch of anthropologists and archeologists really happy RIGHT NOW instead of feeling bad about missing everyone else’s pet Major Event.

specifically an intersexism thing: watched a video on warrior cats genetics. video repeatedly brings up XX and XY, and did not even allude to other setups existing (at least not from what i watched. i stopped a minute or two before the video ended, but i doubt they wouldve just brought it up at the end if it wasnt mentioned during the rest of the video). the video was about how a certain canon character from the books couldnt look the way he does, because Genetics. comments mention how he could look that way if he was XXY. video maker responds with something along the lines of "im just trying to keep it simple for those who are starting to learn about genetics! i hope other people do their own research"

maybe.. you (video maker) can do your own research too instead of treating intersexuality as something impossibly complex that people shouldnt learn about when theyre starting to learn about genetics. stop treating XX and XY as "important" and everything else as "secondary/unimportant/optional"

This is intersexism.

It would have been so easy for the person to just say "for a cat to have this fur pattern, that means it must have at least two X chromosomes. So that could be XX, XXY, XXXY, and tons of other potentials! Cats like these are known as intersex, because their genitals and reproductive 'dont match' their chromosomes."

That's it. That's literally it. Intersexuality is not that fucking hard to explain. Can people stop pretending like you have to be a biology teacher to understand it. Its no more complicated than explaining perisexuality.

Thought I'd share my excitement- I commented on a post, explaining how the h slur is still a slur when directed towards animals, and trying to explain how it originated from usage towards intersex humans before the use on animals, and trying to explain things like gonosimulistic or bigenital as alternatives for the (fictional) species- and SO MANY PEOPLE have commented thanking me for the information and telling me they'll switch their language and wishing me well. I am SO fucking happy???!!!!

God. Win. Finally. Someone who says that and doesn't get 1 bajillion assholes replying Ermmmm but my comfort slur tho?. More of it pleag

Chapter 7 - The Bathtub

This episode is so good!!!!!!! Even though it's mostly just setting up for the season finale, it's where we get to see everything and everyone come together and share what they know, come up with a plan.

It starts with Mike, Dustin and Eleven running away from the Wheeler house, 'cause Brenner found them. They meet Lucas and in the middle of the super high stakes car/bike chase, my girl El flips the motherfucking van!!!!! That is such a pivotal moment in the show for me, it's always awesome seeing what El can do in season 1. The kids get to the junkyard and then, Lucas and El apologize to each other. It's such a cute little moment between them, and it also leads to Mike apologizing to Lucas.

While the kids are hiding in the bus, Hopper, Joyce, Nancy and Jonathan try to contact them, and eventually, Mike answers and Hopper picks them up (but not before beating up the Lab agents LMAO I love my boy Jim). It's so cool seeing the groups blend, as they do in every season (except for 5), but for the first time ever. To me, that's a repetitive trope that always works, especially for a show with so many main characters and plotlines.

Speaking of plotlines, while the action is taking place, we get a glimpse of Steve's redemption arc, which I love, and tells Tommy and Carol off (I hate these two). He also helps the movie theatre employee clean the sign that Tommy sprayed calling Nancy a "slut". Good boy, Steve!

El tries to find Barb and Will with the walkie, but it's not strong enough, so she tells them she can do it from the bath. This scene has so many moments that give me goosebumps. First it's the pep talk Joyce has with her, thanking her for what she's doing for her and her family, reassuring her, making her feel seen, safe and appreciated, something El had never experienced in her life. It's sad, but it's so beautiful to see the beginning of her relationship with Joyce. I wish we had gotten more mother/daughter dynamic moments between them in other seasons.

MY WONDER TWINS!!! After finding Barb's body, Eleven finds Will, still alive, barely breathing in Castle Byers. She reassures him, saying they were on their way to rescue him, and he tells them to hurry. This scene is so precious to me, El holding his hand, being so worried about him even though she didn't even know him yet. Little did she know Will would become her brother.

Next up, season finale!

90% of the Mike Wheeler hate comes from Mike getting upset in an upsetting situation when he is at the most 15 years old and its ridiculous.

"Oh I hate how he yelled at El at the quarry when they thought Will was dead, and he said 'what's wrong with you?'" You mean youre mad this 12 year old boy who believes his best friend is dead and also believed this girl knew he was alive is upset and yelling because of that???? Not to mention he later brings El back to the basement and then calmly explains why her "lying" to them hurt him.

"Oh I hate how toxic he was in season 3 and how he yelled at Will and lied to El." You mean you hate how Hopper threatened him and so he was too scared to go see El and then also didnt want to tell her, her father threatened him? Youre also mad he yelled at Will because Will did not care about his relationship troubles and then proceeded to force him into playing DnD at the Crack of dawn??? Once again he also takes accountability for lying to El and being possessive, and he also calms down immediately after yelling at Will.

"I hate how toxic he was in Season 4." The season 4 Mike hate also confuses me. Like he is not a demon because he struggled to verbally say 'I love you' when he has canonically always struggled with verbalizing his feelings properly. Usually lashing out before reigning it in and apologizing. WHICH AGAIN HE DOES in season 4. Hes also not a demon for getting upset that El didnt tell him she was getting bullied so therefore hes going to be confused when she seemingly wacks the shit out of someone he believed to be her friend. (You can claim he shoudlve known but canonically he didnt. So its really a moot point.) Plus he attempted to get the music shut off.

And this one pisses me off the most. "He reminded her of Brenner" No tf he didnt. The flashback that they cut to has nothing to do with Brenner, and everything to do with El believing she massacred all her siblings. I.E the violence she just demonstrated against (what's her face, i forget) directly mirrors her standing over all her siblings dead. If Mike truly reminded her of Brenner in that moment we wouldve focused more on Brenner in the flashback. But no we focus on El and the dead bodies because her main problem that Seaosn was her feeling like a monster.

You can say Miks should've handled the aftermath better sure, but demonizing him because he lashes out like any 15 year old in a fresh relationship is absolutely bonkers to me. He was never a toxic boyfriend and El doesnt need independance from him. Mike has never hindered her independence and he takes accountability for the times her hurts her.

The push to make Mike out to be this toxic demon of boyfriend comes from the people who just want Mileven broken up and therefore exaggerate everything to furthest extreme.
