the fact that shikamaru picked up asuma's vice of smoking cigarettes vs shikaku's vice of drinking
it was the tail end of sakura's surprise birthday party. ino had the original idea, which of course meant him and choji were helping with the set up and take down. shikamaru was perfectly comfortable lazing on the couch, though his friend sitting next to him always preferred talking whether or not it would come out of his ass.
shikamaru's face instantly screwed together, "that's not true. wait —kankuro told you that? don't listen to that guy, naruto." @osumaki

am having a "what the fuck am i doing" writing a cisman on this blog
i love female characters. i will always love them — fiercely, unapologetically, without condition.
i don’t just enjoy writing with them. i prioritize them. because the reality is that femme - presenting characters are consistently treated as disposable in this space — flattened into tropes, sidelined to make room for louder men, or picked apart under the microscope for flaws that male characters are praised for. i’ve seen female characters erased from their own stories. i’ve watched them be written out of relevance, or worse, rewritten into something unrecognizable just to serve someone else's narrative.
because i know how rotted this space can be toward femme - presenting characters. i’ve seen it. we all have. it’s disheartening. & exhausting.
there is something deeply broken in the way writing spaces, especially fandom spaces, treat women. it’s in the way complexity is punished. softness is mocked. rage is vilified. it’s in how quickly they’re labeled annoying or unlikeable or irredeemable for displaying the same traits that make male characters beloved & " complicated. " it’s in the way their pain is overlooked, their power undermined, their agency stolen.
that is why i choose them. that is why i will always choose them. because they deserve more than the scraps. they deserve stories that are just as rich, as nuanced, as devastating & magical & alive as any others. they deserve love that isn’t conditional. they deserve to be messy, brilliant, selfish, selfless, heroic, cruel, tender, & everything in between — without needing to earn the right to be remembered.
so yes, i will always cater towards my girls. i will always write with them with depth & care. i will defend them. if that ever makes you uncomfortable, if that ever makes you scroll past — then this simply isn’t the space for you. this corner of the internet is for girls with blood on their hands & stars in their eyes. for women who cry & scream & survive. for femmes who were written off & still found a way to matter.
i love them. i always will.
its a crime we never saw this fight, bc they fucked him UP
no bc the more i think abt this the more its clear that he really did hold his own against THREE highly skilled people before kabuto showed up.
he went against kakashi AND gai AND the other guy for awhile and they hadn't beat him yet if we take a moment to think about this + who we see the others against. i don't think they would hold back either i mean it's a full on attack on konoha it's life + death
chunin exams to konoha crush arc we do not give the lore in that the credit it deserves
"geez, this place is a mess." hands in pocket and shoulders slouched, shikamaru glanced around the office. if anything would show that sunagakure was in a transitional period, it would've been the assortment of stacks, boxes, and other various forms of organization completely disorganized across the office.
once the interim kazekage looked to him, shikamaru lifted a hand in greeting, "nara shikamaru. lady tsunade sent me as konoha's administrative representation for this year's chunin exams." @bakisensei
shikamaru had a childhood crush on choji I'LL DIE BY THIS BTW
slouched on the bench outside the hokage's office, shikamaru sat with his arm across his lap, a cigarette in the opposite hand, and a knot between his brows. he'd never really considered himself a spiritual kind of guy when he was younger but these days, after the war, smoking felt like burning incense.
the knot in his brow tightened. shikamaru opened his eyes to sure enough see the silhouette as familiar as the chakra signature he just felt. he pushed himself up, stubbed the cigarette on his sandal sole, then flicked it into the small trashcan he'd put out there himself months ago. the weight on his expression lifted, delight peaking just out its edges,
"i didn't know we were expecting guests from suna" @stolenfates
i do love shikamaru for his fishnet shirts and little earrings and sentimental cigarette smoking
perhaps … a starter call
Blanching, Baki clears his throat. “I am simply someone they're close too.” He wasn't built to be a father, and he didn't have a fatherly bone in his body. Children annoyed him, teenagers scared him—and the new adults of the world worried him. “I hope you understand, however. Why I can't go to her directly.” It wasn't his place, and it never truly was, Temari never answered to him like a daughter, and why should she? She wasn't his brat.
“If you don't want to, I suppose I can wait here until Kankuro comes back around.” Chase him off, or make him replenish the fridge; preferably the latter. Or, he could go to Gaara and have her handle it, she always did have a better hold over those two than anyone else; but running to his kazekage over such matters felt … juvenile.
Then again, so did asking Temari's … 'friend' from the leaf village. “I didn't want to involve anyone else but I fear if we don't put a stop to this now, it'll only get worse.”
one side of shikamaru's mouth pulled up at how familiar the teacher's mixture of anger and embarrassment was. temari wore it a lot prettier, unluckily for baki's fridge. "Aah," he groaned, pushing himself off the poking chair back, "i understand completely, i'm the newcomer here. best fixes are by turning problems into solutions, right?"
the konoha jounin leaned forward onto the table now, "or worse than a newcomer, if i'm the reason she moves away." things had been getting more serious between them, and shikamaru had heard temari grumble about the konoha humidity or konoha extroversion enough to figure she wouldn't keep staying longer and more often for any other reason.
"geez, things are this serious between us already?" he closed his eyes with an exhale, "aren't you supposed to take your time while you're young? have a few different relationships before you find someone to settle down with? i can't even imagine myself with anyone but her."
“No” Baki frowns. “I think Kankuro is breaking in.” Even now, even after everything; siblings are still siblings. [ As an only child, he was both relieved and jealous. ] He discards the carton in the trash, sighing. “I think he's fighting with Temari,” he went on. About you, is left unsaid—but, Shikamaru is not a stupid man, and it's what Baki likes about him the most. He was a good Shinobi and a smart one, though Temari could and would take care of herself—
It was nice to know that she was … being taken care of.
“It's why I asked you to meet me here. I need you to talk with her about this.” For the sake of his groceries and his nerves.
shikamaru’s brows raised at the accusation before his entire expression deflates with a visible sigh. “come on, man. don’t make me…” but shikamaru stopped himself to multitask both listening and frowning. so temari’s teacher (who scared him) came to him to tell him to talk to temari (who scared him) to talk to kankuro (who was a pain).
shikamaru leaned back and looked up, the chair was uncomfortable but the ceiling had the slightest unfamiliarity of material. it was something he unexpectedly valued out of slowing down in sunagakure. “i really was spoiled by being an only child, huh?” he didn’t even have parents to pester him these days. but so didn’t a lot of people. that was what war did. eyes flicked down to temari’s teacher, “you know, when i first saw you, you seemed like. almost like a parent.”
if i think too much about the shikamaru vs hidan fight i get woozy
