Can't Buy Me Love [[closed]]
AII-0042 glanced at his hand as he took hers, eyes opening slightly to express her surprise at how forward he was being. Normal social constructs dictated that most wouldn’t openly grab another person like tha- she stopped herself. Human? Robot. AI. Manufactured companion.
Feeling his mother’s hard gaze on her back as they left, the AI quickly matched stride with Jean, though her steps were more frequent in order to match his long stride and fast pace. Her eyes were everywhere as they left, knowing she should pay attention to her charge but instead admiring the building they walked through. The glass windows that covered the walkway made a perfect viewing platform for the outside world.
Her long steps faltered as they walked, the AI so enamored with the outside her full attention was on that instead. Outside, there was life. Living things not manufactured but created. It was an interesting thought, to give birth to another living thing. Her chest ached, above her left breast. Wishing not to worry Jean, she kept her brow from furrowing though she didn’t understand what the feeling could be. Her pain sensors were dulled, and a quick scan of her functions reported everything to be running at full capacity. A phantom pain? Impossible- she wouldn’t know what it felt like in the first place.
The AI filed it away for later research. Murmuring an apology, she stepped inside of the elevator. Of course, she could simply access photos on the city mainframe, but there was something about seeing it for oneself.
”Do you prefer the outside, Jean?” She asked him, her hand still in his. Her sense of touch was soaking in the physical contact, how the muscles in his hand shifted on occasion. It was the first thing besides the metal desk that she remembered physically feeling. It sent her heart racing.
Bright eyes glazing over for a moment, the AI model logged onto the city’s public information database. A large server that encompassed almost every bit of information one would need to navigate the city. “The weather is ideal at seventy two degrees Fahrenheit, currently slightly overcast… Temperature is expected to rise another six degrees by noon and then steadily decrease by one pm.” Clearing her throat, she continued. “There are three places within the city that would be most enjoyed in a day like today. However… Only one is deemed appropriate to visit. What would you like to do, Jean? As your companion…” Companion; a person or animal with whom one spends a lot of time or with whom one travels. Perhaps an AI would qualify as an animal, to some humans. The definition would suit her.
”As your companion, I am set to accompany you to your destination of choice.” She shut her mouth, lips set in a thin line as she kept glancing out the glass windows of the elevator. The AI couldn’t help but be distracted, wondering what it would be like to touch the grass or ‘feel’ the sun as it was described, even though it was simply a makeup of molecules that could hardly be defined as a ‘touch’.
Filing away thoughts of such idle enjoyment for her own selfish benefit, she turned her gaze to Jean. Producing a small smile to set him at ease while the rode the elevator, she took the time to examine his features once more. Nothing new had appeared, as was expected, but she noticed the tension had seemed to leave his body. Was it the building himself or perhaps mo- his mother? Perhaps she would ask later if the circumstances were ideal, but as of now it wasn’t her place.
Ah, right on queue. AIs were, after all, living computers. In a sense, at least. Jean was used to the idle chatter of information, the nearly scripted responses and the boring conversation that the androids always seemed to make. He'd been told that this one would be a little more creative. He wanted to test that out.
There was something neat about his mother's androids. Each one was unique, in it's own way. Despite the onslaught of information vomiting, they were all different. All of them. Patrons of Charge were always put through a personality evaluation, to find their perfect match among the models. Jean had even helped with that, a bit. Years of being around the industry had made him keen to the AIs' personal wants and needs. Like owner like android, after all.
He remembered summers in the evaluation room, scratching notes on paper about the clients, their habits, their aspirations. Questions like, " how do you discipline your kids? How do you feel around others? Would you lie to get what you want?"
Long story short, Jean learned more about people than he ever wanted to know. But Charge wasn't about policing morality. Charge was about consumer satisfaction, and it was damn good at its job.
Jean couldn't help examining AII004-2 and wondering- what traits had been picked out for him? He hadn't gone through a personality evaluation, mostly on his mother's insistence that she knew him well enough to assign him an AI. His old ones had been simple enough. Old scrap models who had as much disdain for the outside world as he did. He'd been getting tired of those types. This new AI was somber, but beautiful, with darkened eyes that seemed to light up through the sunny glass of the elevator window. Jean liked that.
"That's right, ain't it?"
"That's right, ain't it?" Jean couldn't help the dreamy tone to his voice, the pure relief he felt at the thought of freedom. Finally. He'd never been so lucky before. "I get to choose. This is a first, you know. It's thanks to you. Guess you're my guardian angel, huh?"
He gave a cheesy smile, wondering if his AI had been created with a sense of humor. If not, he supposed it didn't matter just yet. He'd almost meant it, anyways. "You know, as boring as it sounds, a walk in the park might feel pretty damn nice." That one, he did mean. Just existing outside used to be such a trial. He wondered if walking around with everyday people was as dangerous as his mother and his guards made it out to be. Well, he'd find out. "But make me a deal, alright?"
Time to test out her creativity. Or capacity for innovation, as his mom would call it. After all, he wasn't just getting the newest model for free. He'd been told to report everything back. How she acted, how she operated. It was his 'job,' or something like that. "Gimme something else to call you. AII004-2 is a mouthful."
Bertholdt: I hate getting in the middle, but sometimes Annie and Reiner’s fights go too far…
