So while doing some pirate research for the play I’m writing I stumbled upon one of the most amazing things I’ve ever read. In the 5th century A.D. there was a Scandinavian princess called Alwilda who’s father tried to set her up to marry Alf, the Prince of Denmark. Alwilda wasn’t cool with this so she and some female companions dressed as men, stole a ship, and sailed away. Eventually they met a company of pirates who were in need of a new captain and they were so captivated by her that they elected her as their new leader. Her crew became so infamous that Prince Alf was sent out to stop them. When their ships met he took Alwilda prisoner and she was so impressed by Alf’s skill that she agreed to marry him after all and eventually became the Queen of Denmark.

Medievalist here for triumphant fact-checking: this story is, if not true, at least true according to the history of the Danes (Gesta Danorum) written in the 12th century by Saxo Grammaticus. You can read his account of Alwilda’s story in the original Latin here, or in English translation here. Highlights include:

She exchanged woman’s for man’s attire, and, no longer the most modest of maidens, began the life of a warlike rover. Enrolling in her service many maidens who were of the same mind, she happened to come to a spot where a band of rovers were lamenting the death of their captain, who had been lost in war; they made her their rover captain.

I love the implication that there were lots of Danish maidens just WAITING for the opportunity of a life of piracy…

Medium: steel, silver, wood

Measurements: overall length: 68.5 cm; blade length: 51.5 cm

The Turkish sword comes with a steel blade, with a simple edge, ornamented with a Qur’anic sentence on one side, and a floral arabesque on the other. Both sides are engraved in inlaid silver. The wooden hilt in the characteristic shape with “ears” has silver appliqués in the center, which are carried through the upper section of the blade.

George Thomson’s Fractal Art 

To most people, numbers on a page and mathematic equations can evoke anxiety and headache or induce calmness and comfort. To very few, however, do algorithms and geometry equate to a detailed and beautiful beginning to art. George Thomson is a 23 year-old student from the United Kingdom who takes great pride and spends countless hours producing art from numbers, or fractal art. George says that for him the images produced by the numerous calculations required represent the beauty and wonders of the universe.

Due to the size produced, the fractal art pieces he creates are perfect for replication as canvas prints. Each piece, as unique as the universe in which it reflects, Thomson says one image can take about 72 hours to produce. The millions of calculations result in peaceful, yet stimulating images, which produce a final picture similar to that of a nebula or what you might see when peering down through a microscope. Thomson’s computer generated fractal art pieces are being shared and sold by him for the first time ever. Each fractal art piece is its own story of uniqueness, color, and light, produced by geometric patterns and shapes.

A Diamond Bigger Than The Moon

The biggest known diamond in the universe is 10-billion-trillion-trillion-carat (a one followed by 34 zeroes), and it’s right above Australia. Well, technically it’s 50 light years away in the constellation of Centaurus, right next to the Southern Cross, but let’s not be picky. Discovered on Valentine’s Day in 2004, the gem is actually the interior of a dead star: a white dwarf that used up all its nuclear fuel and collapsed in on itself, creating enormous pressures that crystallised its carbon core.

The cosmic jewel is hidden below a thin layer of hydrogen and helium gases, and it measures 4000 kilometres across and weighs 2.27 million trillion trillion kilograms. “You would need a jeweller’s loupe the size of the Sun to grade this diamond,” said Travis Metcalfe, who led the research into this star at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics. The largest diamond on Earth—the 530-carat Star of Africa—doesn’t stand a chance against this one. Don’t even think about slipping it on your fiancé’s ring finger.

In five billion years time, our own Sun will reach the end of its life and become a white dwarf, then after that its core will crystallise as well, leaving a giant diamond in the centre of our solar system.

Zulfiqar Tegha Sword

Culture: Indian

The blade of the sword is of heavy thick steel, deeply curved while the edges to the front and back features large serrated teeth. The even width of the upper blade expands greatly towards the tip, this has the additional feature of having an intentional split or separation from the point towards the hilt for approximately 10 inches.

This is known as ‘zulfiqar’ or ‘Dhu al-Fiqar’ and refers to the sword of Ali which was split in battle, as such it is a symbol mainly used by the Shia Moslems and can be found on weapons, or emblems on flags or decoration throughout the Islamic world.

The hilt is of khanda sword form, with a large rounded handguard, and side guard to protect the fingers. The pommel comes with a large dished feature, long pommel spike of steel with some chiselled and pierced work at its base. The langet fixing the hilt to the blade has a lobed shape, while the grip area has some fabric covering.
