I don't know how to articulate this well, but I really fucking hate the way a lot of thin writers write fat characters. Like how men write women "breasting boobily" there is something so dehumanizing about how fat characters are often written. "He waddled", "he lumbered", the writer of the book I'm reading always mentions this characters "fleshy hand" when he does something with his hand. Like, we already know that he's fat. There is no need to describe everything he does as "doing it fatly".

before i forget!!! cool thing we heard last night at the sinners Q&A: MBJ decided to wear different sized shoes while playing smoke and stack. for smoke he wore a size too large, the explanation being that when you're wearing shoes that are too big, you're less likely to want to move around because of how uncomfortable and clunky it is. as a result, smoke as a character is very still and purposeful with his movements. and then for stack he wore a half size too small because it makes you constantly shift around on your feet trying to find a stance and a position that feels right and takes the pressure off your feet. that makes stack more fidgety and restless. so MBJ said that wearing the different shoes made it a lot easier to embody the twins because he was just reacting naturally to what his body was telling him, rather than overthinking his movements. just the coolest shit. such a neat acting choice. i love movies, man.

In general, Sinners has great cinematography, but I think this tracking shot that follows Lisa Chow across the street from her parents’ Black storefront to their White storefront is one of my favorites:

Look at how it immediately establishes the rules of the movie's setting.

This is Jim Crow Mississippi where Black and White residents essentially live in different worlds. The continuous take forces us (the audience) to experience that segregation in real time as we walk behind Lisa crossing the street. There are no cuts or edits to interrupt the discomfort of having to witness all those visual reminders of racism against Black Americans.

I think it's also significant that it's Lisa, an Asian American woman, who the camera follows. As someone who exists outside the Black-White racial binary, she’s able to traverse these two worlds but the bright red of her shirt still demarcates her as a conspicuous outsider amidst all the blue and brown on both sides, representing the uniquely precarious position of Asians in the U.S.’s racial hierarchy.

Have you seen Toy Story 5, yet?!

Hi! I have and I don’t hate it but… I don't exactly love it either (spoilers below)

The whole Buzz/Jessie romantic line just doesn't work for me. There's literally no chemistry between them!

Buzz acts like he's been hit with a love potion and can't think about anything else — which is so out of character and honestly just dumb. And Jessie acts like she doesn't even need it, just going with the flow, like 'Oh, you love me? Ok. I love you too, I guess.'

Other than that, Jessie’s arc is okay. It's a bit clumsily written, but cute. I liked the new characters.

And the biggest plus for me: Woody was absolutely charming the whole movie! His presence wasn't really necessary, but he wasn't completely useless either. He's really sweet to everyone — I was worried he and Buzz would be at each other's throats the whole movie, but fortunately no (Buzz mostly just snaps at him for no real reason, while Woody really tries not to pick a fight).

And just look at him — what an absolute cutie💛 (sorry for bad quality, but this is the best I could find right now):

One of the things I love about TS5 and Buzz and Jessie, is that even though Jessie has plenty of doubts (and tons of trauma/baggage) about the devotion of her current and past owners/kids.... not ONCE does she EVER doubt Buzz. That man has the devotion of a Jane Austen leading man. Jessie KNOWS that man LOVES HER! 😭

Jessie saw Buzz tryin to propose and she took the initiative to kiss him.
