Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), a close Trump ally, announced Thursday that he will introduce legislation to sanction Canada and Canadian officials over the huge wildfires that have poured smoke and haze across the United States, creating hazardous air-quality conditions. “I’ll be introducing a bill next week to sanction Canada and the responsible Canadian government officials for this atrocity,” Moreno posted on social media.

“We are done accepting apologies in place of action. If Canada will not manage its forests to prevent these fires, the United States will look elsewhere, and act on our own, to protect our people,” the GOP lawmakers wrote. “That means our own agencies exploring direct involvement in cross-border fuel reduction and firefighting capacity. It means reconsidering how much benefit of the doubt this relationship continues to earn on an issue where American lungs are paying the price for Canadian inaction, year after year,” they warned.

one of the more notable things about sport fan superstitions is like...

so, ok. there's a common kind of superstition where you do a thing -> good/bad thing happens to you. break a mirror, spill some salt, reblog the lucky money post on tumblr, see a black cat, and maybe your partner breaks up with you, or you get a job, or whatever. personal action -> personal outcome.

and then there's sport superstitions where you do something while watching the game and your team wins/loses, so next time you have to make sure you do/don't do the thing. to win the game.

but you're not the only person watching the game. all the other people watching the game are also doing or not doing things. most of them are off somewhere else where you can't see them.

and with the first kind of superstition you can sort of propose a world model where there is some cause and effect mechanism between your action and the outcome, how that mechanism works you don't know but you have empirical evidence that it does! and your evidence is bad and your reasoning privileges hypotheses it shouldn't but at least I can see how someone makes that mistake.

but with the second kind you are proposing effects that are like fundamentally inconsistent with the known fact that lots and lots of people are doing things. even in principle if the exact composition of people in a room watching a game can determine the outcome how could you tell if it's your room that has the magic property of doing that?

and i could dismiss this as people just having a bit of fun and nobody seriously believes that who they watch the game with has a direct cause and effect relation with how well some guy kicks a ball except i keep hearing about people making some objectively unreasonable requests of other people in the room with them to preserve the conditions they have decided the sports magic likes.

like. if they don't believe this request actually matters then they're being kind of an asshole about it? which leaves you and by you i mean me, in the unenviable position of trying to figure out if the people telling you (me) about how they told a family member they were not allowed to leave their room for two hours are malicious or just unwilling to spend two seconds of cognitive effort in reasoning about cause and effect. or maybe they think they're the main character of the universe!

i bet the nomai played a variant of soccer with quantum rock balls where the spectators could influence the game by closing their eyes at strategic moments but everyone has to do it simultaneously so a large part of the game is about deceiving the opposing team/fans about who would benefit from the ball teleporting at a given moment. that's why there are so many spherical cutouts from all the quantum rocks. there's no written evidence of this game because the jock nomai never bothered to become literate. that's my headcanon now
