“Toxic parents…rarely get past the first item on the list.” - Susan Forward
My “parents” definitely did not get past the first item. Indeed, many many times they specifically said I was not allowed to complain because they more than met the first requirement. They tried to make me think there were no other requirements. Well, THERE ARE. And giving me too many superfluous material items did not cancel out my need for the other things or make the abuse acceptable. AT ALL.
Did your parents meet these requirements? Which ones? Which ones did they fail to meet? How do you think that impacted you?
Mine barely met the first. I would have enough to meet physical requirements but somthing else would always put a little asterisk on it. Ex. I always had “normal” portion sizes but they worked me so hard that I was skin and bones. They did meet the 5th requirement.
My parents only made it to the first requirements and even then once my sisters and I were deemed “old enough” they barely kept up with that one..
My parents met the first and last and they are the cause of physical and emotional harm and the 3rd one is, to them, nonexistent for me
But they met all that for my sister, I think my birth is just an accident tbh
Something to consider is, if parents didn’t meet 2, 3, & 4 did they really meet 5? Because not meeting 2, 3 & 4 means that their behaviors, which are much stronger than words, taught you immorality.
My mother used to tell me she went above and beyond because she gave me more than one meal a day. I haven’t fact checked but she said the govt only required like one or two meals a day. However, “meal” was debatable. I remember her screaming at me for half an hour because she was convinced I ate 3 fish sticks instead of 2 for dinner. I think I was about 10 at the time but I can’t be sure.
I suppose they followed 2 fairly well although if I did get hurt they laughed at me and taunted me for getting upset or being in pain.
I’m not even gonna begin on 3. I remember coming home and being excited to talk about what I learned or did at school and my mother (and other adults in my life) showing 0 interest. It took me a while but I learned my lesson: Nobody cares what you have to say. It took several years for me to unlearn that.
I’m gonna go ahead and call 4 a no. Even today, at 21, I’m an emotional wreck.
5 is iffy. Yeah I guess they kinda taught me life lessons here and there but overall they didn’t really teach me how to be a person. I was taught to be obedient and helpful, not a moral individual. I wasn’t allowed to want or need anything.
Most of what parents teach their children gets communicated through modeling, not words. So it is not the things they say to you that teaches you morality, but the morality (or lack thereof) you see them living.
Ours got the first two,,, sort of. We got yelled at for having food sometimes though
When I was living with just my dad, it was 1-5. When it was both my parents, it was just 1 and there were days when that was debatable.
1-2: sure
3-4: *MANIC LAUGHTER*
5: eh
can you BELIEVE keira knightley didn’t win best actress for Pride & Prejudice (2005) when she is the only actress in history to capture, to the soul, that silent pulse of hysterical amusement when you just cannot believe

#This is exactly why she didn’t win #Men didn’t even know that’s what she was doing #Pride and Prejudice [x]

Buffy’s not my favorite character, not because she’s not awesome but because she’s kind of sanctimonious... (I always really liked Faith and Anya and Cordelia).
But I still feel like we’re the same kind of adorkable
Well, in spite of the yummy bagels and palpable tension, I’ve got pants that need to be altered.
I love the slow walk back like “I could keep moving but this is too good to pass up”
Just finished my Professional Responsibility exam. After taking and passing the MPRE over a month ago. WHY? WHY MUST WE ENDURE BOTH?
This is a pretty fair question, but in retrospect you might have saved more time by taking the class first lol
It’s wonderful! You should be very proud.

I’ve been through all of this. But, I worked it out. This isn’t something you have to do forever. Eventually you can teach yourself how to choose better people and how to be content with a loving relationship.
Also, even if you don’t sabotage, you feel intensely anxious waiting for the other person to hurt you. It takes time. Lots and lots of time - and healthy love to begin recovery. Please be patient with yourselves as much as you can.
