His uncle had told him that, once. ‘’The good major does like an experiment,’’ had been his exact words. ‘’You don’t think he...?’’

Corv seemed to have read his mind. He smirked. ‘’Block girls, eh?’’

Avril tried his best to smirk back. ‘’Yes, quite.’’

‘’Eh, if it’s anything of that sort, it must have started a long time ago. Someone like her even ranking that high in Enforcement is, well...’’ He waved a hand in Avril’s direction. ‘’Maybe she’s one of the good ones. ’’ He was grinning now. ‘’Though if she’s sufficiently damaged, well... they can be very eager to please, if you know what I mean!’’ He laughed and slapped Avril on the back as he got up. ‘’In fact, I think I’ll be scouting for some fun now. He downed yet another drink. Don’t just sit there, Heert. Attractive fella like you, reeking of credits to spare. They’ll let you do whatever you want!’’

Avril smiled stiffly. Block Girls. He wouldn't have had much to do with them, for obvious reasons. Block boys? He couldn't be sure. The odds were relatively high at this level, even though Avril hadn't been this far down in at least a couple of years. His father had once joked about about ''block girl teeth.'' He wondered if his new supervisor still had all of hers.''

A few days later, the truth of Dedra Meero’s teeth was hard to discern, because she spent most of her first day barely opening her mouth. She more or less ignored Avril at first, though she did him give a perfunctory greeting, as well as the galaxy’s most awkward handshake. This turned out to be a good start, judging by the series of fiascos that followed. For starters, she promptly walked down the wrong hallway.

At the end of the day, Meero seemed like she’d barely set foot on any planet, let alone the upper levels of Coruscant. She spent her first meeting as an ISB supervisor in silence, looking a faint pale-green.

Canon gave us the storeroom and then gave us the S2 domestic nightmare a year later and simply refused to elaborate. Fine. I’ll elaborate.

Five chapters of the gap: Dedra trying to file “he saved my life” under accounts payable and finding the paperwork keeps rejecting itself. Syril learning that the reward for months of being told to go away is one wordless moment in the dark and the entirely new problem of what to do with it. Two people who are terrible at this in perfectly compatible ways, maneuvering each other into a relationship the way other people maneuver assets into position.

Featuring: fabricated clerical discrepancies as a courtship strategy, the phrase “liability if encouraged,” and Dedra Meero being a reliable narrator of everyone’s intentions except her own.

She’s not falling for him. She’s assessing utility. The assessment is just taking several weeks and happening over lunch.

Went with Twin flames - I honestly forget how Syril was in the first half of Season One Andor. He can be just as terrifying as Dedra when he wants to be. I feel like we didn't get to see this more authoritative version of Syril again until his final episode in Season 2.
