🟢 Chapter 20: What She Finds 🟢
Dedra’s known there was a child for three months. This chapter is about finding who.
She works it sideways. No direct access, no trace. Medbay records that won’t name a patient. A ship’s manifest she won’t touch head-on. A cell block, a case number, a file restricted past the point most people would stop. She doesn’t stop. And the abstract half-million-credit target finally resolves into a name: Jyn Erso. Daughter of Galen Erso. A woman who went to Scarif knowing the cost and sent the signal anyway. Detained. Escaped. Unlocated — with an infant named after the man who hid a flaw in a weapon and died before he knew it worked.
Dedra reads it and understands something the whole galaxy missed: they have the same problem. Two women inside the same man’s orbit, one who got out and built a life in its shadow. So she does the one thing an auditor can do that looks like nothing at all: she reviews an old flag on a Ferrix contact, finds it contains nothing of interest, and closes it. Not suspended. Gone. A signal, for anyone experienced enough to read the space where an action used to be.
Then she waits. She’s very good at waiting. She learned it on Narkina.
