As the genocidal entity of the "republika srpska" prepares to commemorate its founding, here's a thread on some of the atrocities that were committed by its police and military forces in 1992-1995.
As this will take place on 9 Jan, Georgio Konstandi has highlighted 9 atrocities.
1) The first concentration camps on European soil since the Holocaust. Non-serbs living in northern and eastern Bosnia were rounded up and detained in concentration camps such as Manjača and Trnopolje. Detainees were tortured, deprived of basic hygiene, and many were killed.
2) Rape camps for Bosnian women. In Višegrad, eastern Bosnia, Bosnian women were raped en masse at the Vilina Vlas rape camp by serb paramilitaries fighting for the "republika srpska". Today this very camp is a public spa. Mona Eltahawy writes on this. (link)
3) The three-year siege of Srebrenica, Goražde, Žepa and Bihać. "republika srpska" forces surrounded the majority-Bosniak (Muslim) enclaves and bombarded them relentlessly. They deprived residents of food, salt, and basic necessities. Hospitals had to operate without anaesthesia.
4) The "ethnic cleansing" of towns & cities, such as Bijeljina (NE Bosnia), Banja Luka (NW Bosnia) & Bratunac (E Bosnia). In NW Bosnia, non-serb residents were made to wear white armbands. This was the first time such acts had been committed in Europe since Nazi Germany.
5) The mass rape of women in Foča (SE Bosnia). Bosniak (Muslim) women and girls were rounded up and raped repeatedly at rape "centres" such as the former Partizan Sports Hall. This happened for months and was committed by serb paramilitaries fighting for the "republika srpska".
6) The shelling of a playground in besieged Srebrenica. In April 1993, the surrounding "republika srpska" forces shelled the town's playground. 74 civilians were killed, including children.
7) The genocide in Srebrenica. In July 1995, the "republika srpska" forces invaded besieged Srebrenica. With the complicity of UN peacekeepers, they separated >8,000 Bosniak men & boys from their families to be killed at various execution sites. Some women were also targeted.
8) Slave labour. Bosniak detainees at the Rasadnik camp in Rogatica (E Bosnia), were made to perform slave labour. Often this involved cleaning "republika srpska" military vehicles. While they worked, they were often tortured.
9) The near 4-year siege of Sarajevo. After the Yugoslav army (JNA) formally withdrew from Sarajevo, the "republika srpska" army were handed the reigns of this bloody siege of Bosnia's capital. Children, men, and women were shelled at, killed, and deprived of necessities.
So, dear world, as you watch the pomp & triumphalism of Milorad Dodik et al. this 9 Jan, remember what it is they are celebrating. The founding of a genocidal entity. Mass rape. Conc camps. Genocide.
Remember the screams of Bosnia's children as the "rs" elite sing and dance.
