In the depth of shadow Venturing inside yourself… I am not speaking of the blood, bones and organs Rather summoning the courage to delve beneath Pulling back your sinew Scooping aside your intestines Until in the depth of your bowel You find it The part of you that is dark Hidden Forbidden Even to yourself A part Bound tightly With past hurts Disappointments Demons some of which have been inflicted on you Others you have fashioned yourself It takes immense courage Extreme fortitude To loosen those shackles To peer with the dark and murky depths of one’s being Reaching deep within And grasping Confronting all those words and actions Which have kept you small Beyond the reach of yourself Freedom requires sacrifice Determination And rage A rage one has carried so long that it has crystallised Morphed into a hardness A veneer A protection From the shadows within.

Childhood Trauma

The child within me lies captured in a glass box,
pressed against the cool, unblinking light
demons circling keeping me small, compliant a prisoner in my own skin.
Their murmurs stitched into the edges of my days;
they have kept me shrunken, watchful, and unfinished. The glass is thick and perfectly clean,
sealed with a brass padlock that glints like denial.
I curl in on myself, fetal and furtive,
arms a shelter from the shadows that lean in. The adult me sits in comfort Watching the firelight move
its crackle and hiss stoking a slow, warm logic.
Flames lick at the log until it forgets itself,
turning solid things to ash and memory.
There is no other sound but the wood giving heat;
my beloved cat breathes beside me, reminding me that I am loved.
Tears take their small, exact path down my cheek. I look back in time To the clear, bright prison,
peering through the glass at the world that waits.
Reason says that on the other side is safety
that the demons will remain where they belong:
seen, known, not erased but given a place.

The Only Space Time held no meaning Nothing existed beyond that space The present was all that mattered Past hurts were forgotten Future promises were set aside. There was only the pull of the tide, The slow, steady rhythm of a shared breath as our eyes explored each other’s souls . In the soft orbit of your arms, The world I knew simply fell away, Leaving only the truth of us behind. Every touch was a quiet revelation, A map drawn by my flesh caressing yours. We were no longer two separate stories, But a single heartbeat, rhythmic and raw, Anchored in the weightless grace Of a love that began before time. In the depths of your eyes, I came alive. Mary My sister I never knew passed away today.
I never heard her laughter,
never traced the rhythm of her footsteps.
I don’t know if she ever knew I existed—
or if I was only a quiet shadow,
a family secret tucked between years. A part of my heart died today—
the part that longed for an older sister,
someone to look up to,
to study,
to admire.
Someone to whisper lessons about boys,
to show me how to paint my face with confidence,
to hold me when the world grew too heavy. How do you mourn someone who lived outside your memories?
How do you enter a family stitched together with silence
when you, yourself,
are one of its biggest secrets?

is shallow,

quickened. I search for courage,
longing to step
into the light,
to be seen. Fear whispers,
and I shrink back
small,
unnoticed,
unheard. Still, somewhere within,

And when the moment comes,
I will rise,

You Hold Me You hold me—
your arms wrap around me,
strong, and steady—
a quiet haven where I can breathe. Your hands,
they move gently through my hair,
each stroke a quiet promise,
each touch a reminder:
I’m not alone. Your care—
it drapes over me like a soft blanket,
pulls me closer,
warms the parts of me
that never thought they could be warm. Your wisdom,
so calm, so sure,
it lifts my eyes
beyond the now—
whispers softly,
There is more, there is always more. I rest against you,
feel the steady beat of your heart,
the weight of your body—
grounded, anchored to something deeper,
and in that space,
I am anchored too. I press my face to your neck,
your scent wraps around me,
familiar, rich,
like the very air I need to breathe.
It settles deep inside,
and with every inhale,
I feel myself soften,
like I’m finding my way home. You make me feel safe,
not just in my body,
but in my soul.
You see me,
truly,
in a way that makes me believe
I am worthy of love. You hold me
and in that moment,
I know I am enough. I know that you will hold me—
through all the days ahead,

and the loud ones too,

Kanreki I stand at the precipice of rebirth,
My kanreki.
One foot anchored in lived experiences—
Memories. The toes of my other foot
Gently brush the invisible line
That marks my renewal.
The zodiac’s cycle complete
A second birth awaits. As I ponder this new beginning,
Half-formed tears fill my eyes
Stinging my pupils
Stripping away past biases
Paradigms that no longer serve
The woman I have become. A curious blend of fear and excitement stirs.
The emerging unknown woman Yet to be discovered.
A transformation underway 
Both terrifying and exhilarating.

The Unveiling I watch the new morning rise to greet me The birdsong melodious Carefree I picture you Your shoulders bent forward Writing A tiny cup of coffee placed beside strips of white paper As you too greet a new morning Though you are half a country away I feel you I hear your heartbeat I place my hands on my own heart And breathe Taking in the beauty and mystery Not only of the crispness of springtime But also the glorious unveiling of us The gift the universe has provided Of connecting our souls through time and space To hold you closely To feel your caress Without touch Bonded Joined The warmth of knowing we are loved I ponder the unveiling The exposure of shadows The dark and the light The tightening and loosening The trust in each other And ourselves Which has freed us to love Firstly ourselves And past eternity Each other. The Observer Sitting on the periphery of my life I watch people come and go Carrying out their daily business A part yet separate The disconnect felt in my body I know that I belong to that scene That I am embedded in the fabric of the environment Yet I gaze at buildings At people As though they are foreign As though I have no understanding of their challenges No inkling of their dreams I have been swept up by a wind created in my imagination Supplanted in a place Comfortable Yet distant Foreign Yet known I know I only need to speak To break the spell To enter the scene in front of me Yet I choose Consciously To remain silent.

Young Love

Do you recall those long summer days Where the future was but a daydream Buried deep within our beings We said so much and spoke so little Our words knowing no consequence Our youth our guiding light We kept desire locked inside us Not understanding how to reach the other Oblivious to our drifting souls Crying for us to awaken to a deeper understanding A wisdom and knowledge that would be revealed in the fulness of time. Our youthful selves forsaken We journey toward our rebirth The years have taught us how to speak While our souls understand the unspoken.

As I cross over from one year to the next I shed my old skin Shake off the dust of disappointment and failed expectations I cry out the last few tears of misery Letting them fall where they may I have no interest in where they land. For I have risen Cleansed the aroma of mothballs from my skin Awakened my soul Opened my eyes and my heart to possibility To the call and beauty of nature To the caring and nurture of friendship. That is not to say I will not face challenges in my journey That is not to be so presumptuous to assume that sadness had forsaken me But I have the surety of knowing who I am That no matter what befalls me I am loved.

A cry for help

I am so determined not to cry To prevent the wetness filling my eyes to fall and stain my cheeks I try to ground myself Listening to the hum of the oven as it crisps the Sunday morning hash browns Honing in on the cry of the raven as he dictates flight paths across the overcast sky The cheeky response of the blackbird as he unearths the newly planted seedlings. I know I have been told Admittedly More than once In order to heal I have to let the tears fall To let them flood my being Cleansing and washing Let them release me My stoicism prevents me The masks I have worn for so long Are cemented into place They have been laid with the greatest of care To hide emotion Thoughts Needs I am not bold enough to chip open a crack in their perfectly polished surfaces I know Though not fully understanding That way to wholeness Is to remove the masks Let the messy, scared being that is me be seen I do not know how And this why I need you.

In the silence of the waves I hear the beating of my own fragile heart I feel the sharp sting of salt water as tears prick my eyelids I resist the temptation to cry To give in To give up Instead I breathe Matching the rhythm of my chest To the ebb and the flow of the tide I focus on this new rhythm Allowing the melody of the sea To soothe my frayed nerves To stay the acidic anxiety that has been my accompanying soundtrack I cast aside the expectations of others Past promises I have made myself Promises that I have outgrown Or have never grown into I watch the tide carry them away Like a piece of driftwood I focus on this moment This precious time When I become myself.
