It disappoints me that The Wolf of Wall Street was included in Sight and Sound's Top 20 of 2014. I'm just not convinced it is anything special. It's a fun movie, but it's just noise (well-made noise, but noise nonetheless). I think Gone Girl is a better film in every respect, but I think because it's so grounded in genre that it isn't taken seriously as a piece of art. Gone Girl produced some incredible performances from all the major players, Wolf got a good performance from Jonah Hill, but otherwise Leo just yelled at the camera, said fuck a lot, and did some physical comedy, and I barely remember Margot Robbie. I'm not even convinced that Gone Girl belongs on sight and sound's list, but if The Wolf of Wall Street made it many many other films have been robbed.
