Pondering my orbs.
Have you ever gotten your book confiscated for reading in class?
(I wonder if this happened to anyone else)
Have you ever gotten your book confiscated for reading in class?
Yes
No
You have taken the whole of me. I could never accept just a piece of you in return.
ok i feel crazy reading through the tag for sinners because theres this very weird pervasive notion that it seems like people do not understand remmick and his kkk member first victims are in fact lying repeatedly throughout the movie. like they lie. we know they lie because they promise all they want is to come inside and play music for the juke joint. that is not true at all as they want to come inside and kill everyone.
so why are there so many posts resting on the notion that they are unable to lie when these same vampires say they dont believe in the kkk anymore and just want equality.
"when remmick de-racist-ifyed the former kkk members" did we watch the same movie. no the fuck he did not. that woman was lying when she said they no longer worked with the kkk. because she wanted to eat the people still inside. good lord.
We established incredibly early on to the movie that the KKK lie! It's their main thing! They lie that the vampire ain't in their house, they lie that the Klan is gone, they lie about that musician to lynch him in a train station. Folks ain't got no media literacy.
yes exactly! + this reply too
there's a huge theme of historical lying to black americans to exploit and kill them. the devil is smarter than to look scary for his victims!
FINALLY someone brings up how they were lying about the Klan from jump! We literally saw the dudes Klan robes in the house before/when the Choctaw hunters were chasing Remmick down! They dead just didn't pay attention to anything in the movie!
the very first thing Remmick does is lie. he makes up a story about the Choctaw attacking him and his wife to get inside the house. this is his character-establishing moment. making up a lie to get inside. then showing the gold to sweeten the pot. that's it.
I actually have just blocked... pretty much every single Remmick stan or Remmick poster I see. It's kinda the only way to scroll the tag, because they just........... made up a whole different story to justify their racism.
The one that finally got me was the time I saw someone saying the whole thing was Mary's fault, because if she had just followed Remmick's plan instead of jumping Stack, the vampires could've gotten in without burning it down &c &c -- what fucking plan?!?!?! like, there is absolutely nothing in the movie to justify seeing Mary's biting Stack as purely her desire, nor is there at any point any allusion to Remmick having some kind of "plan" that doesn't involve him and his crew killing... like... everyone.
the thing that killed me was all the notes were agreeing with her!!!!!! they'd all agreed, together, with the only textual evidence being "we want the white guy to not be bad," that the lying white killer vampire had a Good Plan, but the selfish horny mean light-skinned Black woman ruined it. And all the people blaming Grace, too, and everybody believing that the vampires are right somehow, and the "hive mind" is some kind of equality, and not just all of them enslaved to his mind, which is conveyed with (i thought) UTTER CLARITY during the dance scene, when they all dance to his tune, and you see Cornbread, who we have met and know is: -a wife guy, -loving and kind to his relatives, -dependable and trustworthy........... doing a very recognizable minstrel dance, complete with hat-wave.
and then when we meet Cornbread again, he's been transformed into a minstrel caricature. he does not, in any way, resemble the character we met earlier in the movie. because he's no longer in control of his own self, he's been enthralled and the racist fucking vampire is controlling him.
the only way i can imagine audiences missing this is that they, too, saw a large Black man with a Southern accent and instead of seeing him as a full character/person, decided he was a caricature.
anyway, block all the Remmick stans, Remmick fic writers, etc., if you want to scroll the Sinners tag. It's the only way to stay sane.
i forgot. There's actually two historic visual references I caught in the dance scene. The first one is Cornbread's minstrel dance.
The second one is when they all lift Remmick up cheering, fawning all over him, celebrating. That one reminded me directly of the way enslavers who owned plantations used to demand that when they came home from a vacation, their entire enslaved staff turned out at the door to meet them, smiling and looking happy. There are records of enslaved people being corporally punished for not smiling in these welcomes.*
That's why I had to just start blocking people. Ryan Coogler's setup was SO GOOD, and Omar Miller and Autumn Arkapaw** did such a fantastic job conveying – to anyone engaging in good faith with a Black movie, IMO – that the vampirism, like the sharecropping, is nothing more than Slavery Again. Or, in the words of Dr. Howard John Wesley, Slavery's (fictional, in this case) Cousin.*** And the people who ignored that and wrote art and stories and essays about how Remmick was Akshually A Good Guy, or misunderstood, or bad but not racist, or what the fuck ever... they didn't want to watch the movie Coogler wrote. They didn't want to watch a movie about Black resilience and Black community and how music can help a community heal from trauma. They wanted to watch a movie with a white guy who was hot and maybe also some other people are there, I guess. And I don't have any god damned time for that.

i feel so bad for goths imagine constructing a subculture where the fashion element is so rooted predominantly in ostentatious elaborate clothes like drapey dresses and cloaks and detailed makeup and teased hair and big hats and trenchcoats and the pop cultural regurgitation of it is softcore porn of cartoon girls with huge tits in black tube tops and some fishnets

I Touched Your Face (And All Life Was Erased) - Chapter 9
Belle was neck deep in the library periodicals, ignoring the dull throb of an oncoming headache, when there was a knock at the front door.
She sat up, rubbing tiredly at her eyes, and swallowed down her annoyance at the interruption. There was no question who was knocking on the door after hours. The library wasn’t the most popular place, and with Donovan out of the country, there was only one person who would come specifically to visit her at work.
Sure enough, Ruby stood outside the locked door, brandishing a paper takeout bag in each hand. As soon as she caught sight of Belle, she grinned.

I know we talk a lot about the literacy crisis and the horrible anti-intellectualism happening rn but I think we need to talk more about how much of an entitlement complex the stupidest among us have developed
I think of myself as a fairly well-read person with a decent vocabulary, and a couple years ago I made a goal to learn 100 new words in a year just by encountering them naturally. (That is, not googling “list of rare words” or something similar.) That’s a couple new words every week!
It was great fun keeping a list. I didn’t drill myself on them so I’m sure that there are a few which, if I encountered them again, I’d have to look up again, but so what? It felt great to learn even a few words.
I can’t imagine feeling angry about learning something new in such an easy way. (The internet is at our disposal! We don’t even have to flip through a Webster’s tome to find definitions any more.) Plan to learn new words until you die!
