things people do in real world dialogue:

• laugh at their own jokes

• don’t finish/say complete sentences

• interrupt a line of thought with a sudden new one

• say ‘uh’ between words when unsure

• accidentally blend multiple words together, and may start the sentence over again

• repeat filler words such as ‘like’ ‘literally’ ‘really’ ‘anyways’ and ‘i think’

• begin and/or end sentences with phrases such as ‘eh’ and ‘you know’, and may make those phrases into question form to get another’s input

• repeat words/phrases when in an excited state

• words fizzle out upon realizing no one is listening

• repeat themselves when others don’t understand what they’re saying, as well as to get their point across

• reply nonverbally such as hand gestures, facial expressions, random noises, movement, and even silence

I got pretty fed up with looking for words to replace said because they weren’t sorted in a way I could easily use/find them for the right time. So I did some myself.

So Joel will need some important people on the board that fill out his history and continue to develop relationships with!

SISTER - He needs his little sister! She can be anywhere from 4-7 years younger than him.  She’s mostly up to whoever wants to take her up as far as personality/occupation/face claim/etc go.  The only things to consider about their shared history is their mother dying when Joel was 17 (you can do the math to figure how old she was based on what age you make her), and their father dying roughly 3 years ago from natural causes/also cancer/whatever he’s dead.. lmfao.  How she feels about Joel is up to you, considering he’s sort of a pretty bad alcoholic and ditched her and everyone else when he moved to LA some years back.  I imagine in the three years he’s been back they’ve mended things somewhat.  They were pretty close as kids, especially after the death of their mother since their father more or less retreated into himself and left them to look out for each other.  

EX-LOVER - I say ex-lover but honestly these two are hard pressed to actually quit each other.  They haven’t been in an actual relationship for a long time but I do imagine every once in a while they end up in bed together because it’s that sort of relationship. Said lady was probably married sometime in her 20s and had a child from that marriage (wanted below).  She comes from a wealthy family, may be a Magnolia native but more likely someone who moved there, perhaps after her divorce.  Well educated, classy, has a good job, definitely can hold her own and be a single/independent mom.  She met Joel when she was around 30/late 20s and they hit it off.  Lived together for some time rather happily until he became too work obsessed and could never leave his cases ‘at work’ so to speak.  He’d often forget birthdays/prior arrangements, it was evident that he did not really put them first.  So instead of letting herself and her child be played second fiddle in his life she decided to leave him.  What she does after this is up to you - Joel moves away after this time.  Now that he’s back it’s up to you whether she is in another serious relationship or not.  If she is there’s a possibility those feelings are contested since she definitely still has feelings for Joel.  They’ll basically always love each other but are in understanding that they don’t work together? They’re mostly friendly, not a lot of hard feelings.  Joel understands why she left him entirely.  He basically idolizes her and doesn’t really consider himself worthy of being with her anyway.  But that won’t stop him from allowing her to run back into his arms whenever she feels the need to because.. y’know. Rachel Weisz would be great.  I’d also be down with a WOC.  She just has to pass for being around 40 years old. If you have someone in mind just run it by me! 

KID - Not really a kid anymore.  They’d be around 18 now.  This is Ex-Lover’s son, who’s play by is open as long as they resemble mom once she has a decided fc!  This boy clung onto Joel very quickly after he entered his and his mom’s life.  Maybe he was a bit reserved as a child, and Joel’s more quiet/easy going nature was good for him.  Joel didn’t pry into trying to make him like him as a kid, and never really tried replacing his father - but he ended up putting him in that role anyway.  Probably used to slip and call him dad when he was little.  Admires Joel despite his faults, but is also frustrated/angry with him for leaving (though it was their mother that left him, I imagine he just wishes he would have tried harder to keep them).  Nowadays the son could be doing really well or maybe slipping a bit, getting caught up with the wrong crowd and needing his surrogate detective dad to save his ass - either way Joel loves him wholeheartedly like he was his own and would give his life to save him.
