He saw it coming, when Hen came to get him. ”I'm sorry,” she said, but he was quick to wave her off.
”I'm the strongest, I know.” He got up to help move Tommy somewhere safer.
Buck sat at the foot of the bed, next to Tommy's legs. ”Bold choice to get wasted at an all ages event.”
”Wasn't– Wasn't the plan,” Tommy muttered.
Buck figured it would be good to keep him talking. If he was talking, he wasn't vomiting. ”You had a plan?”
”Mm. Was gonna talk to you. Ask you how you were doing.”
”And the liquid courage didn't come?”
”It did not.”
”I'm surprised you came.”
”Thought it would be easier with other people around.”
”Was it?”
He could hear Tommy shake his head against the bedding. ”Haven't heard a fucking thing anyone's said to me.” He managed to dig up some courage from somewhere and asked, ”How are you?” a few minutes later.
Buck exhaled deeply. ”Not great.” He looked at Tommy's knees. His jeans were wearing through. ”How much have you heard?”
”Something about a car accident. And a hostage situation. Something about you clearing out an ambulance?”
He frowned at Tommy over his shoulder. ”Really? That's what they're saying?”
”You know how it is.”
”Yeah,” he huffed. ”The worst game of telephone.”
”Is any of that close to the truth?”
Buck gave up and lied down, too. They lay there, shoulder to shoulder, staring at Hen's bedroom ceiling.
”I didn't clear out an ambulance, but I thought about it.”
”What'd you need it for?”
”I've been flagged for doctor shopping. Didn't know what else to do.” Tommy flailed for a second. It startled the shit out of Buck. He watched him stumble off the bed and out of the room. ”Tommy?”
Tommy didn't reply. Buck didn't know what to make of it. He didn't really feel like moving, so he didn't.
A couple of minutes later, Tommy came back. He looked a little green around the gills and was holding onto the door jamb like a life raft.
”Sorry, had to puke.” He wiped a hand across his brow. ”Did you get hurt?”
”Uh, yeah. They gave me oxy at the hospital and I guess I can't handle that.”
”They gave you a prescription?”
”Yeah.”
”That seems stupid.”
Buck smiled. ”It was.”
”And now?”
That was a very good question. He thought about tranferring. Again. He was sober, in every way. He wasn't sure if he needed to be, but it seemed like the smart thing to do. He was still trying to figure out how to handle his grief.
Eddie loves many versions of Steve that he gets to witness on a daily basis. (a few examples include:) Adorable, while whooping and jumping in place because he's so happy/excited. Badass, when Steve spews pure venom at others(who deserve it!) when they piss him off. Precious, when he's being soft,gooey and snuggly when it's rainy outside or he's tired. Hot, when he's trying so hard to rein in his gasps and moans, while Eddie's praising him and urging him to finish.
