Regarding those images of the new deltarune playing deck of cards circling around, there’s some really interesting aspects I would like to highlight.
First of all, only Jevil and Rouxls Kaard are the only ones protruding outside of their frame.
This could definitely give the implication that they are the only two cards in their deck overly aware of their existence, and possibly breaking the fourth wall.
For Jevil, this is obvious, he had the shadowcrystal and only sees everything as a game, because he knows that this entire world is just a video game, breaking the fourth wall.
When it comes to Rouxls, this is where it is interesting. The one notable thing we can say about him breaking the fourth wall is the case in which his sprite is always facing forward, at the player. Even now seeing his card in the deck, (Although we cannot yet confirm if this is how they would appear in the lightworld) he’s looking directly at the center, even if his body is turned away.
There’s more I would like to give input on, but they may be as seperate post since I wasn’t expecting the first part to be so long. However, there’s one thing that I would like to know too.
With the phrase “Discard before Playing” being on Rouxls Kaard, it already brings up some themes in which he parallels.
There’s three possible candidates for which he’s supposed to directly mirror.
Firstly Kris, Secondly December Holiday, and third, the Vessel.
Going based off of the phrase itself, this most closely ties in with the vessel, in which we do just exactly that when the game begins. A screen pops up where we create a vessel, make our own aspects, and at the very end, it is discarded before we begin to play the actual game.
Which is an interesting parallel to a rules card being the card that you have to read at the very beginning, and throw away after knowing all the rules of the game.
With Kris being a parallel, this is more the case of underlying subtext. A good example is when the sword route is being played, your character eventually is “used up” just the same as the mage character that follows you around in the route.
Of course, this can be paralleling how a rules card cannot be continuously played within the deck, it eventually has to be “used up” once you understand all of its rules already.
Along with Kris’ associate with copies and things monochrome, there are some interesting other parallels they have to Rouxls Kaard, but I am only just scratching the surface for now.
At last, December Holiday. Her parallel might be the most obvious, yet also discrete at the same time. She is a character that is never even seen on screen, beside for one cutscene in chapter 3. She is a character that “haunts the narrative”. Her presence has already been “discarded” before even opening up the game.
I want to know your guys’ thoughts too! Which character does Rouxls Kaard most closely parallel?
