What is a “Universal Offering/Devotional Act?”
Feel free to request or suggest deities! This list will be done in order but you can ask for me to complete one that’s further down the list.
This list is subject to change. There are probably repeat deities (deities who go by multiple names, parts of groups like the Horae or Charities who are mostly grouped together, etc.) on this list. Some deities are not on here. Some names are spelt wrong or different.
first, a note on cthonic vs ouranic: the line between these gods is one that is not really as stark as it can be portrayed. many gods have both ouranic and chthonic aspects, and neither make them any more "good" or "bad" than the other. chthonic gods are not evil gods, at least no more than any ouranic god. all deities have the capability of doing good and evil, but are largely ambivalent in nature. the advice listed below is not set in stone, simply provided as gentle guidance. if you have suggestions, feel free to add them in the comments/reblogs! :)
LIBATIONS/OFFERINGS
In Ancient Greece it was very common for offerings to the chthonic gods to be given in the form of libation--a drink (or any liquid) poured into the ground. Solid offerings, like food, were often burned in their entirety to ash or left to rot, instead of being partially shared by the offeror. Incense was not as commonly used since the smoke travels upwards, towards the heavens.
I suggest disposing of/keeping ashes and rotted food outside or burying them, seeing as chthonic sometimes refers to "-of the earth." This would be similar to how curse tablets were treated in Ancient Greece, as Hermes, messenger of the gods, would deliver them unto their underworld-ly receiver from there.
If you can't do that, consider pouring your libations down the sink or flushing them down the toilet (ONLY do this with water-based liquids, oil and honey will clog up your sink in no time flat). It's not ideal, but it gets the job done.
Common libations include: coffee, blood (animal or your own, we'll get to that at the end), honey (instead of wine), milk
Common offerings include: meat, barley/grain, oil, cheese
PRAYER
In many cases, prayers to ouranic deities are directed upwards, into the sky or delivered unto the wind by voice, song, or some sort of poem. In the case of the chthonic gods, we should be directing them downwards, towards the underworld where they reside. This may include extending your hands with palms facing down, putting your head down, or just imagining your prayers being sent below. The only exceptions to this may be Persephone, who resides in the heavens for half of the year, and Hermes, who can be considered both ouranic and chthonic.
Other recommendations I can make are: light a candle, even if you're not going to use it for pyromancy; light some incense (I do this for focus and cleansing, not so much for the deity); and perform it at night. It's not mandatory, of course, to perform your prayers at night, it's just that in antiquity ouranic activities (festivals, prayer, etc.) were done during the day and often directly enshrouded in sunlight. We can assume, therefore, that a chthonic prayer or festival should occur during the night, especially if being directed towards Hekate or Nyx.
ALTARS/SHRINES
In Ancient Greece, temples to the ouranic gods were constructed so that their doorways would directly face the sun, thus illuminating the inside (and often the main statue(s), too). We can assume, then, that our chthonic altars/shrines should be located somewhere out of the direct sunlight. This can be in a dark spot, like a closet or isolated room--or it can just simply be in a corner furthest from the sun's rays.
Again, there may be some exceptions to this: Hermes, under his ouranic epithet(s), Persephone, for her time in the heavens, and Hekate, for her association with the moon.
DIVINATION
For the most part divination with the chthonic gods is conducted in much the same way as with the ouranic. Of course, when calling upon these deities you'll want to face towards the ground, and perhaps even conduct these sessions in partial darkness. Again, maybe you could light a candle or even pour a libation before a really big reading.
I mostly use pendulums and tarot, but I've been experimenting with meditation and have had some luck. What works for ouranic deities should work just as good for chthonic, you just might have to shift your approach a little.
Some good tarot spreads for working with chthonic deities:
"Fork in the Road" spread-- for Hermes or Hekate
"The Tower" spread-- for Hermes or Hades
"The Self Exploration" spread-- for any
"The Bat" spread-- for Hades or Persephone or Nyx
EXTRAS
--Consider offering blood if you're able! Animal blood that is sourced from ethical farms is neither morally reprehensible or illegal and can be sourced from a variety of places. Offering your own blood is also a possibility, but for this I would not recommend more than a pinprick. There are limits to how much pain you should be incurring on yourself for your deities. If you have to check your blood sugar often, maybe you can soak up excess blood with some cotton and bury it outside. Make sure to always clean your wounds properly and do not engage in this behavior for the purpose of self-mutilation. That, I can assure you, your deities would not appreciate. Don't be stupid.
--Snakes are commonly associated with almost all chthonic deities, or just the Underworld in general. We see this the most with Hermes, who is pictured with two snakes wrapped around his caduceus. The god Asclepius is also pictured with a staff with a single snake on it. Asclepius is the god of medicine, and (before being deified) was killed by Zeus for making people practically immortal.
--Chthonic deities are the best places to turn to for spirit work, protective, and baneful magic. You're looking to contact a spirit? Turn to Hades. You're looking for protection against spirits/demons? Turn to Hekate or Hermes. You're looking to cast a curse? Turn to Persephone or Hekate.
hello! this blog is being revamped for my witchy followers as a pagan blog and a digital grimoire for me to share with others. For people interested in my writing, I'll redirect you to my new blog for anyone who asks :)
My blog broke and the tumblr staff never helped me fix it so I wound up unintentionally abandoning this blog. Considering trying to resume here or remaking it and continue my original plans with this tumblr; It was really disheartening when it essentially broke and I had genuinely loved my time here. Thank you for those who still interact with my content, it makes me happy :)
It's believed you can use an apple to see your future lover. Do this spell in a dimly lit room when the lights are out.
Wait until midnight, then cut the apple into nine pieces. Turn off the lights, and begin eating the pieces while you look in the mirror. When you get to the final piece, stop and close your eyes.
Say:
Reveal to me my lover, his (or her) face reveal to me,
reveal to me my lover, his (or her) face I wish to see.
Throw the last piece of apple over your shoulder, and open your eyes. You should catch a glimpse your your future lover's face in the mirror.
Equal parts cloves, dried apple, and passionflower
Bowl
Clean sock from each friend
Do this working to help make a friendship last through thick and thin, no matter what sort of obstacles might get in the way. Mix up the herbs in the bowl, stirring clockwise, and saying:
Friends for life, friend forever,
friends of the heart, friends forever.
Use the spoon to put equal amounts of the herb blend in each sock, and then tie the tops of the socks tightly. Give the socks back to your friends, but make sure no one gets their own sock; everyone should have someone else's. Keep the sock you get someplace safe, and the friendship will be maintained.
Hi, could I get one for Chris or Steve and how he would be with reader female friend that he likes and she has migraines every single day, that leave her a bit blind, make her dizzy and makes it hard for her to talk including her meds don’t work. “Sweetheart?” Steve’s honeyed voice calls, and while the sound of Steve would typically make you light up, it just sounded like an aching noise to you at that moment.
You felt the migraine coming on, but still somehow were incapable of catching it in time to appease some of the discomfort. Instead you were left lying on the couch - the spell had caught you off guard and left you to take a break there. Moments turned to minutes, you wouldn’t be able to figure out how long it’d been without a clock. You were left indisposed, flat on your back with your head barely pressed against the arm to lift the base of your skull slightly. An arm draped across your eyes shields your retinas from the light.
“Out here,” you find it in yourself to croak, the sound doing nothing for the way your head is pounding.
It’s a broken rhythm of pulses on the right side of your skull, leaving it to throb uselessly. It feels like an ice pick stabbing your mind, fearful to let the light even hit your eyes lest the wave of sun drive dread into your core. You find yourself exhausted at the day-to-day occurrence. It was bad in the beginning, but now it’s just a miserable inconvenience.
“Mhm,” your answer comes simple, it’s all you can manage.
Steve finds you in your pitiful state when he rounds the corner, concern immediately flooding into baby blue eyes. The worry lines on his forehead make themselves apparent with a small knit between his eyebrows.
“Another one?” he inquires, voice hushing a considerable amount so as to not irritate the episode even further.
He hates seeing you in pain.
Steve doesn’t need anything else to get to work. You can hear the tread of his sock clad feet along the carpet, nearing closer to you as a hand reaches over the back of the couch. A soft brush to your shoulder with a comforting squeeze
before he’s leaving. The pads of his fingers trace down your arm leaving soft goosebumps to litter your skin and briefly distract from the pain.
You’re not sure what he is going to do, but you know better than to think Steve Rogers would just abandon you like that, especially in a moment of hurt. You’re proven right a few moments following when the man is right back at your side.
“Head up, sweetheart.”
Trusting Steve has always been easy, and that moment is no different. Cautiously lifting your head, Steve seizes the moment and there’s the soft feel of a neck pillow finding shape around your neck. There’s an immediate twinge of relief when there’s no longer a sense of tension, relaxing into the u-shape.
“I’ve been reading into ways to alleviate the symptoms since we’ve been trying to find what works for your migraines. Someone recommended a dandruff shampoo with a cooling property.” The suggestion is sweet; it makes your heart warm just a little when your lips curl into a delicate smile.
“M’gonna move you to our room, okay, doll? Ain’t gotta say anything, I’m gonna take care of you…” Quiet words - your answer comes in a little groan of acknowledgement. The next thing you know, firm arms are around you. Steve’s right arm tucked behind your knees while his left cards under to support your head. Taking you to a comfortable place is ideal; Steve’s going to fret over you no matter where you’re laid out anyhow. Super soldier strength makes you feel a pillow to him practically. Cradling you close to his frame, you side flush with his abdomen. You use the moment to conceal your eyes in the crook of his neck, instead. Eyes screwed shut when you press against the hollow of Steve’s throat, nose pushing against his skin and you take shelter from the light there.
For Steve to take you into consideration like that; To take time out of his own day to look after you - it’s so him. It’s part of the reason you love him so much: his heart of gold. Takes care of everyone…
Though you’d be lying if you said it wasn’t a little bit of a struggle to follow the words at that point. Steve is just trying to be helpful; you can’t blame him. Steve on the other hand watches you with a sympathetic gaze, coming to your side.
You try to take a deep breath in that moment - taking a deep inhale of Steve. The smell of his skin, the soap you both share lingering on sun-kissed, freckled skin. There’s the underlying scent of cinnamon and leather, but also something sweet mixed in it all. Something so distinctly Steve.
He makes sure to angle you from the light when he carries you to the room you share. Your head tilts from the safety of Steve’s neck when he’s moving to lay you down. It’s right then that the room spins and the colors are overbearing and bright. Ripping a nauseous gasp from you and Steve to respond by dragging you right against his neck again.
“I’ll grab the trash can in a second,” if you’re going to be sick, he wants to prepare for it…
Gingerly placing you down on your bed and fixing the pillow that traveled with you both on the way. His touch is nothing short of gentle and caring. Steve touches you like you’re something breakable, but not fragile. It’s how you both have always been. No kid gloves needed despite the problems you face; it’s a breath of fresh air to have someone who understands you the way he does.
“Thank you, Steve,” you find it in yourself to murmur between tight lips - your expression not necessarily matching the words as you lay with your eyes shut again, but you mean them all the same.
Steve stays with you through it. Through the pain. He only slips away one more time to grab you two bottles of water from the refrigerator, wanting to keep you hydrated, and an ice pack from the freezer that finds a home on your forehead. The other thing that Steve grabs on his quick trip through the house is the essential oils from the bathroom. Peppermint, specifically. Dabbing it on your temples and gently massaging with fingers into your skin, as well as taking his time to apply it behind your ears and neck, too.
Through it all, Steve’s voice is steady and warm.
‘It’ll pass soon, sweetheart…’
‘Do you want more to drink?’‘I dimmed the lights, it might be a little easier for you to see now.’‘I think we might have a heating pad somewhere around here if you want to try that.’
His presence is warm and comforting as it always is.
By the end of the wave, you’re laying with Steve in the same bed. Him laying beside you, your head pillowed on his shoulder. The neck pillow abandoned sometime before you both wound up entangled. The steady beat of his heart is calming and grounding the more that time passes. Everything feels less loud; the tension in your body managing to slowly wane with Steve’s help. The pounding is no longer incessant like someone splitting open your mind with a drill.
“Thank you,” whispered appreciation from you.
Steve smiles, rubbing a hand up and down your spine to the small of your back.
“Don’t thank me for something like that, I’m just happy I could help you feel a little bit better… Seeing you in pain is never an enjoyable experience, sweetheart.”
“I know,” tilting your head up slightly so that your eyes can meet the soft hues peering down at you. Cheek slightly smushed against the meat of his shoulder; Steve finds you oddly precious in that moment. “But I’m still thankful… Did you really get all these tips online, though?”
Steve gives a warm huff of amusement, lips curling into a boyish grin.
“Didn’t need the internet for things like that, my mom was always there to help me… I’m sure she’s happy knowing that some of it stuck so that I could help other people, too. Especially you.” Steve’s point is accentuated with a soft kiss to your forehead.
Your features soften and you melt a little more against Steve’s body. You never knew what you did to deserve Steve, but he’s been a gift as long as you’ve had him.
🌱 Gold Candle
🌱 Equal parts St. John's wort, fennel seed, and nutmeg
If you're getting run down mentally because other people are depending on you, do this spell to give yourself a little extra emotional strength. Try to time it for a sunday night, before you go to bed. Light the candle and say:
I am the one on whom others depend,
but my emotional stamina is starting to end.
Give me strength, that I may soar,
give me strength to get through one day more.
Blend the herbs together on a plate, and drip a bit of the melted candle wax into them. As it cools but before it hardens, shape it into a small disk. Place the disk under your pillow as you go to sleep. Hold it in your hands each morning before you get up to start your day so you can absorb the strength of the herbs.
Not rlly a question but I just wanted to tell you that you’re a wonderful and special person who’s presence in this world has helped so many people. You matter and you deserve the best of things in life, pls remember to love yourself today 🖤
Hi anon
I'm having a really rough day (week, life really). It's why I haven't been so active here. But thank you for this. It's small things like this that help me keep going when everything feels too hard and the air feels too heavy to breathe. Thank you. Thank you thank you thank you.
If there's something -- or someone -- in your life you want to get rid of, a good old-fashioned banishing spell can be remarkably useful. Use an apple to eliminate the problem people or issues from your life.
Use the knife to inscribe into the skin of the apple the name of the person -- or the type of issue -- you need to get rid of. After you've done so, cut the apple in half, making sure you slice through the name. Wrap the two halves in the tissue paper, dig a hole, and bury them somewhere far from your home. As the apple decays in the earth, your problems will gradually go away.
Bucky, listening to the voicemail Sam left him talking about how apparently Wanda is allegedly dead, Spiderman is MIA, there's a guy running around in a white suit and a cape beating the shit out of people, hulk has a cousin that's now a hulk, there's a hot guy running around in a red and gold suit, a muslim girl is running around in Jersey with mutant powers, Clint has a new successor and apparently Natasha's sister - none of them knew about except Bucky ofc - was trying to kill him, OH AND there's a giant creature/statue type thing that broke the Earth's crust and is just now forever protruding out:
If you have crayons around your house, do this spell to boost your creative spark.
Close your eyes and open the coloring book to a page at random. Open your eyes, and see what you're going to be working on. As you get started, use unconventional colors and think outside the box. Make the grass purple, or the sky yellow. Be adventurous and go outside the line if you dare! As you're coloring, let your mind clear of everything but the colors, and fill every inch of white paper on the page. Hang your artwork somewhere where you can admire it, and then go create something brand-new, original, and beautiful.
Sapphires are customarily associated with divination, prophecy, and healing. If there's someone in your life who's been ill, you can do this working to help provide some relief and comforting during the sickness.
Light the candle and sprinkle the thyme around it. Hold the sapphire between your palms. Say:
Healing magic, sapphire's power, bring relief of pain
