Of all the weird contrivances that superhero media have by virtue of genre, I think the no-kill rule is one of the easiest to justify. "Why don't these paragons of virtue extrajudicially murder people?" fuck dude, I wonder.

I wonder that too, they don't give a fuck about due process or restraint of force in anything else they do. When was the last time you saw a superhero get a search warrant or follow the chain of custody or care about whether they were actually legally allowed to search Doctor Skull's lab for flesh-melting gas because the confession they got about it from a henchman was coerced when they hung him off the edge of a building to get it?

And if there was ever a justified use of lethal force it'd be with a supervillain. Actual cops will go through very careful steps and procedures to ensure that the evidence they get is gotten in a legal manner, but then draw and fire on anyone they think might possibly be a threat. I think the guy with the atomic disintegrator ray or the super-gorilla throwing cars at people is a greater threat than a hobo with a knife who's off his meds, especially when the dude with the disintegrator ray did this exact same shit a few months back and destroyed about three city blocks with his Neutro-Droid.

He's one of the most popular villains! Besides, having to constantly create new villains if the old ones went out that fast would lead to superheroes not having nemeses at all and just dealing with new faces every day like the police, and if someone wanted that they'd just watch one of the 14 trillion police procedurals that will continue to be made no matter how far TV falls.

At the end of the day, 99% of the "superheroes don't kill" rule is for real-world reasons relating to the creative process and business of making comics. "Metanarrative" isn't even it, because where do things like sales numbers, plotting out future arcs and "eventually people will run out of space in their brains for all these characters" factor into a metanarrative?

The Joker? Has died. Lex Luthor? Has died. Green Goblin? Has died. Ras Al'Ghul has died! Some have been retconned, some have gotten better, some have cloned, but when the narrative is spent they can and have died without the hero murdering them.

You know who hasn't died? Paste Pot Pete (the Trapster) or The Magician. The Penguin. It's very easy to have villains who don't have to die to resolve their narratives, and that's by making them something other than brutal murderers.

But the idea that the heroes need to murder villains to remain heroes is the actual point of discussion here. Not metanarrative elements, because that is far less a 'Why doesn't Batman kill the Joker' question and more of a 'Why doesn't Red Hood kill the Joker' thing. No, the issue is the insane thought that if the heroes don't commit an act of murder, they're letting evil go 'free'.

And honest to fuck after the goddamn past two weeks of law enforcement shooting people? We kinda have a very very very large series of real world examples of why 'just let them murder people' is not actually something that we, as civilians, want in self appointed vigilanties fighting 'crimes'.

Quite simply put, when you escalate the tone, people don't listen to you. When you claim that 'X is violence!' then they know that there's no point in adjusting how they behave, because you have no actual moral baseline.
