People think this is just a joke but Alan Turing was the inventor of the computer and his sexuality was illegal in his time (which was not even 100 years ago) and he was arrested. They put him on drugs that destroyed his genius brain and committed suicide a year after being covicted. He was gay and a war hero as well. He helped to break enigma which was a German code that they put all their messages through. He shorted WWII by two years and saved so many lives in the process.

Prosecute ICE

I may well be a voice crying out in the wilderness but, I think this needs to be said:

Defunding ICE is not enough. Restructuring ICE is not enough. Abolishing ICE is not enough. Expanding any or all of the foregoing to the Border Patrol is not enough. ICE and Border Patrol and everyone who worked for or with them or who directed them MUST be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. Those who actually directed and perpetrated the atrocities must be dealt with in the harshest possible terms. The same for those who assisted. As for those who did not actively engage in the activities but who, nonetheless, allowed them to happen and did nothing to stop them, they are still culpable and, at the very least, should be sentenced to lifetime community service in immigrant, or, possibly, minority communities.

Something akin to South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation programme may be helpful and beneficial before, during and, after the prosecution of ICE & USBP. Under no circumstances, though, should those being prosecuted be offered or granted amnesty. I feel I must underscore the fact _everyone_ involved with these crimes must be prosecuted, from the bottom all the way up to the top, from the bottom ALL THE WAY UP TO THE TOP.

I realise this is an unpopular and radical position. It is, however, necessary. If there are no repercussions for cruelty, it will happen again. Punishment MUST be meted out.

Ayer por la noche, my flatmate and I were trying to determine why everyone is (finally) up at arms about immigration policy. I’ve been fighting this fight for ten years in the Pacific Northwest and, before those ten years, for multiple years elsewhere. (They, by the way, are the grandchild of a couple who met in one of the concentration camps the US put Japanese-American citizens in. They’ve been in this fight for decades.) It saddens me to know it was only the fact White mothers couldn’t escape the cries of children being separated from their parents that gave the movement its steam. Yes, I am glad people are finally taking notice and doing something - almost regardless of whether anything will be accomplished. But, I am sad and angry it took such a tragedy for it to happen. When I imagine what could have been avoided if existing laws were change and new laws introduced ten years ago I want to cry. When I think of how many people would not have been traumatised had this many people had this much compassion during the Reagan era I am enraged. I am outraged by the near canonisation of Mr. Obama - and have all but lost it on a few of my supposed fellow travellers.  In fine, I am glad White, liberal mommies are finally paying attention but, why weren’t they paying attention previously?

Very basically, “antifa” is short-hand for anti-fascist.  If you a) are opposed to fascism and b) willing to do something about it, then you’re antifa!  As you can imagine, this means that a lot of people qualify as antifa.  And indeed, it is a big-tent movement, where people with all sorts of political philosophies and opinions are united in their opposition to fascism. Two suggestions if you’d like to know more:1) Go through our archive - it will give you a better idea of the kinds of things anti-fascists are involved in.  For example, if you just search the asks in our archive, you’ll find lots of answers to questions you might have about antifa.2) Read Mark Bray’s Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook for a really good historical overview of anti-fascism.

June 3 2018 - Patriot prayer comes back to Portland and gets a warm welcome from local antifascists. [video]

A year after Patriot Prayer, and it’s leader Joey Gibson, brought in white-nationalist and neo-Nazi speakers for an Alt-Right rally they returned with another rally labeled as a “Free Speech” event. This charade quickly became clear when they showed up with the white-nationalist and misogynist hate-group Proud Boys and attacked journalists.

Anti-fascist groups Rose City Antifa, Eugene Antifa, Rash NW, Pacific Northwest Anti-Fascist Workers Collective, and others organized to shut down this rally and prevent white-supremacists and those that give them a cover to organize under from marching in the streets and instilling fear in the at-risk communities that they target.

Police struggled to keep Patriot Prayer’s numbers protected which lead to panic and anger from their crowd. After several attempts by Patriot Prayer to march, all of which were prevented by the large coalition of anti-racist activists, Patriot Prayer returned back to Terry Shrunk Plaza and called it a day.

Several core members of Patriot Prayer, along with Tusitala “Tiny” Toese, who has been arrested for fighting at past events, were chased throughout the streets of Portland and finally found police protection at the Portland Waterfront. The numbers of the crowd opposed to Patriot Prayer and the Proud Boys had swelled from random onlookers who only had to hear who was being chased to join in on defending their town from hate.
