I am currently working on the 2020 chapter of part 11.

It's a very weird experience. One, because I've had to look up timelines of things I've lived through to make sure I'm remembering when we were doing certain things. (Remember disinfecting delivered groceries? I hadn't thought about that in years.)

But the really weird part is that one of the big things I did during Covid was work on this series. Time is collapsing in on itself. This is an ouroboros situation.

Rereading inch by inch, and I got smacked in the face by Maddy mentioning Vacant Soul all the way back in fic 2. I think you said somewhere that this series was in planning for a long time before you started writing, but just how long did you have the idea??

So the idea started with me playing The Sims. I wanted to make kid versions of Aziraphale and Crowley, so I wanted a reason for them to be kids. This would have been pre-season 1, but likely after it was announced, since that got me to revisit the book. At that point I had no intention of writing a fic; I was just playing around with stories for fun. There were different versions, one where they were both reborn with no memories and didn’t remember anything until later. At one point Az was a girl. At another point (when I was hate watching 7th Heaven) Az had a bunch of siblings. Tony always had a pretty consistent back story, except at one point I forgot his first name was Anthony and I misremembered it as Alexander.

After the burst of fic that happened in the fandom after season 1, I started thinking of actually writing it. I think it was then that I decided it would be more dramatically interesting to have one of them remember and one of them not. It had to be Aziraphale who remembered because I fully think Crowley would have just kidnapped little Aziraphale to save him, rather than try to keep an eye on him.

I played with a few ideas about ages then. Does Aziraphale stay an angel and they meet when Crowley is older? No, I want to write about kids. Are they the same age then? If they’re too close in age, Crowley will act on his crush too early and that would be creepy because Aziraphale will still have an adult mind. That’s when I decided on the four and a half year difference. Big enough to keep them from any childhood romance but small enough to work as adults. I knew I’d have to separate them for awhile around late high school to keep things from feeling creepy.

That’s when I made up the families and started filling in details. I came up with the bookshop reunion pretty early. I knew I wanted Tony to have a band and made up his bandmates. Having one be an older veteran of the music business helped me come up with more character variety, so Xave and Vacant Soul were invented early on. I decided he’d end up with Maddy and Tony would get a half sibling pretty early too. I think this was also around when I came up with Atiku and Leon. Because I got the university expansion pack for the sims.

That’s around when I wrote out a list of what each part of the series would be. I found that plan again recently and I was surprised how close I actually stuck to it over all. Each time I start a new section I write out a more detailed outline just for that section, often broken down by chapter. So that’s when the real details come in.

Lots got added or expanded along the way. The dance girls were an offhand mention in the outline, for example, and they got expanded a lot. Same with Mikey. I guess I didn’t consider them needing other friends originally. Mrs. Ferguson came out of nowhere in a chapter I impulse added while writing.

In the original plan I remember I was going to skip from Aziraphale leaving after coming out to the reunion of the characters with Tony at age 20. Very glad I changed that. There was way too much development for way too many people that had to happen in that section.

That’s probably way more than you were asking about… but, hey, expanding stuff to be WAY longer than originally intended is kind of the story of the whole fic.

I miss the engagement of posting one fic every week while writing the next installment. And that’s why you get Mii spam. This one’s wild.

Mii spam- Sunday issue

Ezra got in a fight with Mr. V so Tony tried to cheer him up.

It did not work.

Only his mother could effectively calm him.

Xave and Maddy continue to have secret feelings.

Newt seems to have forgotten that he and Anathema already have three.

(I turned him down. I also turned down Ezra, although I kind of wanted to know what that kid would look like.)

Ezra and Atiku had a treasure fight with a glove and historical document because they’re nerds.

Hi! As an avid fan of Good Omens, Good Omens fanfiction, an Paralives, this is something I've wanted to try for ages: For one of my first Paralives saves, I created the Good Omens universe from By my side, the awesome fic of @demonicputto! I'm still finding bugs, and my screenshots aren't the best, but I will explore what the game has to offer :)

The Clarks' house, the manse:

I just made a teeny retcon to Part 10. It's actually returning two lines to the way they were written in my original draft. For those of you who were reading at the time, you might remember that I wrote it before Season 2 came out but posted most of it after the release.

At the time, I felt compelled to take Season 2 into the canon of my fic. Not, of course, the current day things, since my fic had clearly diverged before that, but the flashbacks--at least as much as could make sense.

The only place this really changed anything was in Chapter 4 when Aziraphale is talking about all the different versions of Crowley that he's loved. Before posting I made a change to this sentence: "I do miss Anthony, but in the way I miss all the old versions of you. The way I sometimes miss the little boy who followed me around and the awkward teenager and that curious, friendly demon from the Garden of Eden." I added in a reference to 'the star maker'.

And in this sentence: "But I still see you, and if I could go back thousands of years, to before The War and talk to a handsome red-haired angel in the star department, I know I’d recognize a familiar person at his core." I added in the word 'again' to imply that they had met, rather than it merely being Aziraphale imagining what it would have been like.

I put the sentences back to the way I first wrote them. I don't feel like I have to stick to the sequel canon anymore. I love parts of season 2, but the book and season 1 are what inspired the series, and I don't feel like I have to try and jam the puzzles together anymore. It can just be a season 1 fic, and that's okay.

And, personally, although I know people have liked imagining them meeting in heaven since before there ever was a show, I've always preferred them meeting in Eden. Their story is very much connected to Earth and I like it that way. And I like Aziraphale protecting Crowley from the rain because he's kind, rather than returning a kindness.

I left a shorter version of this note on chapter 4 as a note to re-readers, so that no one feels like they're going crazy if they go back and find it's changed.
