i love how there's at least two different points in carl's arc where the book poses the question "does carl hate the universe enough to choose that hatred for them over his care for his friends?" and both times the answer is a resounding "no." in the butcher's masquerade he has the brief thought that he could trigger carl's doomsday scenario and it would kill all the hunters, but also donut and everyone else. and he asks himself if he's willing to make that sacrifice, and then that option isn't mentioned again. it's a resounding "no." then in eye of the bedlam bride he thinks about how much he hate borant and the universe that did this and how angry he is at them, and we know that that rage is POTENT, and if he's willing to kill his friends to make borant pay. and he once again chooses his love for his friends over that anger and hate

i think one of my personal favorite aspects of the dungeon crawler carl series is watching Carl, a cishet dude, avoid any sexual or romantic subplots with the deftness of a trained aroace.

Trying to explain DCC to my friends is so hard bc you have to bring up bullshit like “yeah so he takes a bowl of snickers from the first book, does a funny dance with them around the ankles of the boss, and then uses an ingame exploit that makes bosses deathly allergic to peanuts and explode into confetti.”

(not something that happens but the fact that it sounds almost identical to some of the explanations I’ve given to my friends proves my point)

im so grateful to dungeon crawler carl. ive only read the first two books, but it broke me out of a three year reading slump. i forgot that reading can be so fun. it was supposed to be lighthearted and a comedy, but it is so much more? and from what ive seen, it gets even MORE more, which I love. i genuinely want to analyze it, i want to think deeper about it, draw conclusions and parallels and really actually engage with it. ive been stuck in a loop of rereading and rewatching for so long i actually forgot how nice it is to read something new. so thank you matt dinniman and carl and princess donut and mordecai and especially mongo. cant wait to start the next book!!
