I think if you’re in an area where there’s no signal with your provider they sometimes just switch you onto another one - happened with me when I was in Jersey, I was either on Jersey Telecom or some French one.

T-Mobile and Orange merged a while ago, so you get signal from either whenever you can, it's pretty awesome, but I still get no signal in Bubbles (N).
