Dazed and Confused
Rock and Roll History
4/15/17
In the film “Dazed and Confused” the writer uses a rock soundtrack, that conveys mood changes throughout it. The first track in this film is “Sweet Emotion” by Aerosmith. This song has a fast tempo using minimalist throughout the verses, and an extremely catchy good feeling chorus. The writer uses this track to get the viewers to understand the the joyful mood of excitement that is happening in the movie, during the last days of school. A track that comes shortly after this one is extremely similar in “School’s Out” by alice cooper. Once again the writer uses a fast tempo track with exciting guitar riffs, and drum stop times for guitar solos. This song also shows the mood of the kids finally being freed and let out of school for the summer. “Why Can’t We Be Friends” Is a track the writers of the movie use to further signal the abnormality of a freshman and a senior, becoming friends. It also shows the change in fortune for the freshman who is the main character, “Mitch Kramer”. These songs especially describe the intense mood changes that happen in the beginning of this film.
The later tracks in this film, not only show mood changes, but help you understand what is happening in the movie. “No More Mr Nice Guy” is a track in this film that shows one of the seniors beating on a freshman. This song perfectly describes the moment in the film and the lyrics, “No more mr nice guy” Are being sung repeatedly in the background. A few tracks later, the song “Hurricane” by Bob Dylan plays. This track is written about an extreme injustice that was done by accusing a man who wasn't guilty of murder. There doesn't seem to be a direct connection to the film in my opinion, so the writers are just using this song for its fast tempo to hype people up. A few tracks later, the song “Love Hurts” by Nazareth is employed as Freshman walk through their last middle school party. This is a very slow tempo song and it symbolizes the end of their middle school lifes.
The later tracks in this film are very unique, and symbolize the many mood changes that occur. “Paranoid” by Black Sabbath Is a fast tempoed metal song with heavy textured guitar riffs and bass playing. This song shows how the mood has changed, with the change of lifestyle that high school brings. Another track in this film is “Slow Ride” by Foghat, and it's heavy texture combined with slow tempo make for an emotional song that fits in the movie well. A song that is played in this film that truly makes you feel you are in that time is “Rock & Roll All Night”. Its fast tempo, combined with lyrics that don't fit well in society, shows the rebel lifestyle that the characters in “Dazed and Confused” live. When the mood becomes more sad in the movie the track “Tuesday’s Gone” by Lynyrd Skynyrd plays, and its combination of minor guitar chords and sad singing can make people feel. The last song in the movie “Free Ride” plays after the main character gets called out by his mom for being drunk, he then puts on headphones and the song plays as he has a smile on his face. The tracks in this film were picked very well, and help people feel the same mood being portrayed in the film.
The setlist of tracks for the film “Dazed and Confused”, were picked to perfection. The songs portrayed the mood the characters were feeling at given points of this movie. They took a rock approach to this setlist and it worked. They also used a lot of music made in the time period of the movie setting, which can give you the feeling of being back in time. The writers in this film know what they are doing when it comes to making a playlist for a movie.
