what is salmonberries 1991

niche german lesbian drama film abt a butch lesbian orphaned coal miner falling in love with a widowed traumatized east german older woman in rural alaska in which they both help each other find closure about their pasts. it has beautiful cinematography, deeply strange artistic choices, k.d. lang as one of the lead characters for some reason, the same song playing 4 times at like really on the nose moments, the ramifications of the berlin wall, a lynchian bingo hall dream sequence, and awkward full frontal nudity in a public library about 15 minutes in (fair warning). last term i brought it up to one of my profs cause i had a gut feeling they’d seen it and they called it “excruciating.” a letterboxd review says “Omg this sucked so bad” and gave it 4/5 stars. i watched it because i think kd lang is hot and came away a changed person because of the unlikely bond between these two lonely women. it’s free on tubi because of course it is (at least in canada where i am, but a friend in aotearoa said not for him, idk about usa where you are iirc) also if you were wondering, no, kd lang cannot act, yes, her stilted and awkward performance improves the movie, so i choose to believe she was Like That on purpose. i genuinely think everyone should watch it at least once. it’s the only movie ever made.
