elphaba turning to religious imagery of st glinda but turning away from the actual glinda is so. like she's so terrified of losing the real glinda or being rejected by her (re: caprice in the pines). she's scared of glinda ending up like melena (dissatisfied depressed socialite) or fiyero (dead by association), but she's also scared of facing the glinda she left behind for fear that she's lost her to high society (a fear that's seemingly confirmed in their colwen grounds reunion). she turns her back on glinda and goes to st glinda for comfort so she won't have to feel rejected by her again

I like the queer implications of "It depends on what you mean by 'friend'" as much as any Gelphie, but to be honest, I think I enjoy movie Glinda's quiet heartbroken "Yes" a lot more. Her vulnerable admittance of it feels so raw and honest, which makes a lot of sense with the context of what she just went through. And for how hesitant she seems before admitting it, you can see how it physically pains her to backtrack and try to downplay their connection once the crowd gasps in shock. She wants to fulfill her promise to Elphaba on never clearing her name, but at the same time, she loves her so much that the confirmation just slips out at first without any filter of "Well, it depends...".

This is one of my favourite line additions by the movie because, although I think it's a little on the nose, it's very satisfying to see Elphaba so blatantly call the Wizard on his bullshit. It's also effective as a subversion of the Wizard of Oz (both the book and the 1939 film) since from those we know he's about to say "I'm not a bad man, I'm just a bad Wizard." And the source material seems to basically agree with him on that, so this is a nice way for Wicked to say 'oh no, we're not doing that here.'

And truly, thought I firmly believe the "I'm not a bad man, I'm just a bad wizard" to be a cheap excuse in every Oz iteration (to the point that I find quite baffling how Frank Baum, in all his political allegory whimsy, seemed to write that notion into the narrative in good faith), it especially wouldn't work for Wicked, where Oscar Diggs is easily at his most morally reprehensible and irredeemable.

He is a bad wizard and a very, very bad man.

glinda is g*y (yuck) but elphaba is the one who said i love you to glinda despite there being some production rule that they weren't allowed to say love in oz. elphaba was breaking the rules of the movie she was in because it was so important that she said i love you to glinda. something deeply truly insane about the love between two women being so powerful it transcends the confines of narrative
