when people are having the very tired mako vs. h2o debate, SOMETIMES i will see people assert that mako covering more mermaid lore is an OBJECTIVE plus. like, they're framing h2o focusing less on lore as an obvious fault. if you really like the lore expansion, that's great, me too, but it's not inherently better than enigmatic mermaid origins or explanations. the shows really are just exploring different things. such an exploration of mermaid lore wouldn't work well in h2o because in season 1, especially, it is crucial for the characters' development that they accept the unknown. they have to accept that magic cannot be understood through a human scientific lens. this is important for a show about three girls who become mermaids, because they learn not to feel like freaks or science experiments. however, in a show about mermaids who live in a huge mermaid society, learning more about mermaid history and magic is how they learn about themselves and grow as characters.

watching h2o with bf and i've thought about this before but it really strikes me how beautifully season one is structured. we meet our big bad dr. denman on episode eight, about one-third into our 26-episode season. arguably the biggest inciting event of the season takes place in 1x13 'shipwrecked' at exactly the halfway mark. then the plot really starts kicking into gear around episode 18 in the last third of the season. we joke but it really is a sophisticated show strictly from a narrative perspective, the virgo in me loves to see it. anyway bring back 20+ episode series in 2026, the children yearn for filler, character development, and space for the story to breathe (it's me. i'm the children)

#season 1 is still my fav season solely bc of this #the way the plot is divided between episodes is just PERFECT #there's just enough filler to give you air for new plot points #i feel like they lost a bit of this balance in s2 #and im not even gonna talk about s3

The Mako Mermaids hate is weird…idk about y’all, but as a child who just loved to mermaid shows, I didn’t care. And as an adult who still lives mermaid shows, I still don’t. Like let people enjoy things, you’re not better for liking h20 and hating on Mako and everyone who likes Mako.

#i personally dont really mind mako mermaids that much #and i'll be honest i kinda liked s1 with the og trio #and we FINALLY got a merman (even tho i wanted lewis) so i cant 100% hate on mm #but i feel the biggest problem of the show is that it's set in the same universe as h2o #which is absolutely ridiculous #and bc of that mm falls flat to me bc that raises Too Much questions #ofc h2o Also raises questions but most of them are the type of questions that are fun to speculate about #how do girls brush their teeth or wash their hands or get periods etc #but with mako mermaids the questions are about lore and are more confusing than fun #like where the hell were these guys during h2o era or why is moonpool is just okay now or how come girls never saw these full moon rituals #and the longer you think about them the more the show stops making sense and you get frustrated

Zane is such an underutilised character in season 2, I wish we had seen more of him. I didn't need him to be Lewis 2.0 but the fact he's one of the few other people to know about mermaids and Rikki's boyfriend but isn't really included is a crime
