Life is easy to be scared of…
For fifteen years, it was just Desmond and his mum, and everything was good. Their house was always filled with music, dancing, and laughter. Desmond’s father had not stuck around long enough to even learn that he was in the making, and while his mother claimed it was for the better, there were days when Desi came home to find her with a glass of wine in one hand, a wrinkled photo in the other, and a mist in her eyes. These were the days when he learned the most about his father, Scotty McGee. His mother told him that he went by the name ‘Smee’ when she’d known him, but that he was called to the sea like any pirate was. Desmond didn’t mind not having the guy around, (can’t miss what you never had, right?), but when he turned fifteen, everything changed.
Sheila, his mother, became very sick. She told Desmond that he’d have to be brave, and that he’d live with his uncle John Joe if it came to that. Des wasn’t having it; the boy started looking for his father tirelessly. It was during his sixteenth summer that he learned that he wasn’t Smee’s only child. Twins named Francis and Frederick lived in London shared half his blood, and a girl in Galway was also related to him. His mother encouraged him to reach out to them by email, but Desmond had never been one to do small things. The boy packed a bag, and first paid a visit to Fiona Duire. She was sweet, and had a feisty attitude that Desmond admired, and she jumped right into the search for their father. Their next stop left them speechless.
Freddy and Frankie were night and day; Fred was the big talker, while Frank just hung around in the back, watching everything go on. Frederick carried on about how their father visited them all the time, and sure, they could stick around until his next visit. Three days later, Mr. Smee got quite the surprise. Desmond talked to the traveler for hours, and enjoyed the little party they had. He played his fiddle for the man, and watched in merriment while Fiona danced jig after jig with their father. Des even got Frankie to crack a grin after a few pints and a couple of crude jokes. They all made up their minds to get together again soon, and exchanged numbers. Smee took Desmond to the side one night and invited him to join him on the pirate ship he worked on, and it killed Des to decline. He never let on about Sheila being as sick as she was; it wouldn’t be fair to drag the man into it all. When he got back, his mum was encouraging and happy for the boy, and even told him she’d support whatever he chose to do. Tempting as a life on the sea with his newfound father was, Desmond just couldn’t even consider leaving her.
With you I am prepared for what is yet to come…
Des is worried sick about leaving his mum to attend Elias Prep. He tried to explain that she was very ill, but Sheila told him that the law was the law. Despite not wanting to go, Des is excited to see his half siblings again. They always have a grand time when they’re together.
