Today in book history...

On this day in 1861, George Eliot’s Silas Marner was published. Though generally viewed as one of Eliot’s minor works, it was as popular among readers when it came out as her earlier Adam Bede and The Mill on the Floss; the book has also attracted attention for the parallel found between the old weaver’s life of misery and redemption and Eliot’s own.

One of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite books of all time. As you guys probably know by now, I love stories about adoptive families and families by choice (especially adoptive fathers, whether they be humans or cyborgs^^).

What a little gem this book is. George Eliot was quite revolutionary in her time for writing the peasantry into existence (rather than being perceived only as Other in contrast to the wealthy). People often forget this while reading her novels from a 21st-century perspective.

It’s a beautiful story that questions the nature of belief and religion, as well as the status of myth.

Silas Marner is a story about a man who moves from community to isolation, and then back to community again. It’s about shifting values, and about the intricacies of village life. I’m not going to lie and say it’s a nail-biting thriller; while there are definitely aspects of the book that are thrilling, it is most definitely a slow burner. Finding home, according to Eliot’s novel, is a matter of engaging with other living beings, with the natural world of growth, nurturance and organic life. In a novel full of natural imagery, Eliot’s human characters appear as plants. They may be uprooted and transplanted but with nourishment and care can reproduce strong roots.

In the early parts of the novel, Godfrey Cass and his feckless younger brother Dunstan are unusual in apparently having no work to do. Their idleness condemns them to vice and folly. In pre-Victorian English fiction there was no obvious stigma attached to being without employment. A ‘gentleman’ was usually, indeed, someone who did not have to work for a living. By contrast, few Victorian novels are without instances of the ennobling influence of work.
