Sage: It’d be great if people stopped sexualizing the act of saving lives, you know? I’d feel way more comfortable if not every doctor on this show was ridiculously hot.
Sova: Well, caham, saving a life is pretty sexy.
Reyna: I must agree.
I Caught Myself - Paramore
Dragging bodies was an unpleasant task. Viper hated it. She always pretended she had a more important task to avoid having to do it. However, she would never prefer to be the dead body in question. Depending on the agents' mood after a mission, they had no respect for a corpse. Jett and Phoenix were known for drawing on the faces of those who got killed in a silly way and taking numerous photos of it. And they even say that Viper was the morbid one. However, she wasn't far behind in the category of disrespecting the deads.
- ...And you ruined my vacation. - She complained, dragging Reyna's corpse by the foot. - You shouldn't have let me dream about beaches - She pulled Reyna tightly, adjusting her body, not caring that her face was covered in sand. - You could have shut the hell up. But noooo, you had to make us believe we could rest.
Alone, she dragged Skye's body, a little more gently, to the jet. When she arrived with the Australian woman's corpse, she found Chamber walking cautiously toward the jet. He offered to help, leaving one of his teleporters inside the jet. Viper guided him by the hand to Sage's body, warning him that he would be the next to die if he made any comment about them holding hands. Still, she couldn't help but notice how large Chamber's hand was compared to hers, with a firm grip that easily covered hers. His fingertips were calloused, and Viper wondered if he played an instrument.
Chamber teleported the Chinese woman with him to the jet. He warned over the intercom that another trip like that would make him collapse and said he would try to move their departure forward. Viper imagined him with his face inches from the jet's buttons, trying to identify those who would initiate the takeoff process more easily. The ridiculous image made her day a little less miserable.
- And now Chamber… - Viper said through gritted teeth, huffing with exertion. - He's all broken. Because of your incompetence. - She glanced over her shoulder at Reyna, wrinkling her nose. - Serves you right, anyway. At least he's alive. - She turned back, finally seeing the jet. - Radiant powers... Three women with healing powers couldn't stay alive. What's the point of the damn - Viper pulled Reyna's leg violently, untying her head from a rock it got stuck in. - radianite in your blood if you don't have the coordination to land a shot? Honestly, you never cease to disappoint me. Ugh! - She released Reyna's leg aggressively as soon as she reached the jet's ramp, running her forearm across her sweaty forehead. Viper put a hand on her hip, looking out at the beach. - I should be here. Getting a good tan. - She grumbled sourly. She glanced over her shoulder at Reyna's body, her eyes narrowing.
The Mexican agent had suggested leaving Chamber dead on the jet while the women partied on the beach. Viper could go through with that plan alone. It was a tempting option. Having an entire island paradise all to herself. If she could come up with a convincing excuse to Brimstone, she could spend the whole day there without any problems.
But she thought of Chamber, agonizing from his multiple injuries. She doubted that if she took him to that beach house in Cuba, he'd find doctors who could heal him completely like Sage or Skye. It was best for them to resuscitate quickly, to heal him as quickly as possible.
Deep down, Viper knew that enjoying a beach alone wasn't as good as with friends. Including Chamber. He'd probably make the day better… She shook her head, pushing away the small urge she had to be alone on a deserted island with him.
The American agent dragged Reyna back into the jet, muttering insults as she placed her in one of the cryogenic chambers to preserve her body during the journey. She watched with disgust as ice crystals mixed with sand on Reyna's face, as well as on Sage and Skye's.
- Bitches... I'll never trust you again. - She grumbled, heading for the cockpit. Chamber was there, and, as expected, his face inches from the control panel. Viper pressed her lips together, suppressing a smile, her sour mood dissipating at the ridiculousness of the situation. - Are you planning on flying the plane, Mr. Nearsighted?
- I am perfectly capable of doing so, mademoiselle. - Chamber said jokingly, a little less grumpy for not having his glasses on. - We'll have a smooth ride, but I think you'd better put on your seatbelt.
- And maybe organize my own velorium. - She commented, going over to him and touching his arm. - Go inside.
Chamber stood up, groaning in pain from the movement, and turned toward her, moving closer. Viper pressed her lips together, lifting her chin slightly. Why did he have to be practically blind and have to stand so close to see her without glasses?
- I think I'll accept the help now, mademoiselle. - He gave a weak smile, visibly tired.
Viper took a deep breath, shaking her head. Of course, he had to say that with as much double entendre as possible. Even if he died, he wouldn't turn off that flirtatious side of his. She could already see the jokes coming.
It would be a long journey.
- Inside. - She repeated harshly.
Chamber nodded, stretching an arm out to rest on the partition between the cockpit and the seating area, right next to Viper's head. Viper raised her eyebrows, staring at him. She was the tallest woman in the Protocol, and Chamber was only an inch taller than her. Yet, as he stood, his body seemed to tower over her.
- Fabrón… - She used her warning tone, trying not to look at his mouth. His lips were dry, the result of dehydration from the day's exertion. She shouldn't be tempted by that mouth.
- Mademoiselle Callas… - Chamber spoke softly, approaching her. Viper remained in place. Her fists clenched. She was about to punch him. But her eyes remained focused on his lips. - I need to pass.
Viper was right in front of the cockpit entrance.
She felt her cheeks begin to heat ul and quickly walked away, heading to start the flight. Chamber went to the seating area, leaving Viper alone with her annoyingly racing heart.
Viper finished starting the jet without a hitch, impressed that Chamber had managed to make some basic adjustments for takeoff. He had even turned on the jet's air conditioning, blowing a refreshing breeze toward Viper. She got the aircraft airborne, and when it stabilized, engaged the autopilot.
Viper stood up, heading to the seating area. Chamber was sitting where Reyna had been for the mission, between two seats, slowly removing his shirt. He had already removed his vest and tie, which lay on the floor beside him. Judging by his distorted expression, the movements were uncomfortable.
Viper hurried to the back of the jet, grabbing a first aid kit, and returning to Chamber. He was peeling the fabric of his shirt away from the wound on his shoulder, grimacing.
- I loved that shirt... - He grumbled, moving in a way that caused him the least amount of pain.
Viper sat to his left, the first aid kit on her lap. She watched him remove the rest of his shirt, exposing his torso. Viper swallowed, pressing her lips together. She'd seen all the male agents shirtless. Especially Chamber, from her walks near the pool where he practiced swimming. A nice abs was nothing new to her. However, his tattoos were truly interesting. The golden lines ran down his body like the circuitry patterns of a computer chip, adorning his chest and abdomen like a beautiful piece of engineering, designed to impress. They continued down his back and down into his pants, following the well-defined line of his hips.
Viper shook her head, mentally scolding herself. The man was injured. He needed help, not someone to analyze his body.
Well... Not the way Viper was analyzing it.
- Can I see? - Viper said as he finished taking off his shirt, throwing it over his vest.
Chamber nodded, leaning back against the seat, looking up. The wound in his waist was more severe. Viper assumed the shot had missed any vital organs, thankfully, but it had taken out a considerable portion of the area below his ribs. She could see blood, dark and thick, oozing from several places where flesh had been exposed. A small patch of skin hung from the wound in a way Viper couldn't describe other than disturbing. The wound in his shoulder was vaguely less severe. The hole from the gunshot wound was located at the bottom of the curve of his neck, just above his collarbone. It looked like the bullet had passed through him, forming a circle that poured blood onto his chest. Judging by the color of the blood, no arteries had been affected. It was bad, but not the worst-case scenario. And the scratch on his cheek had stopped bleeding.
Viper grabbed the saline solution from the first aid kit after thinking about how she could help. She poured a generous amount into her hands and then poured it over the wound on his waist.
Chamber clutched his thigh, squeezing his eyes shut, his face twisted in pain. Viper glared at him, dabbing at the wound with fresh gauze.
- You're not going to die today, Fabrón - She commented, trying not to worsen his condition by performing the procedure.
Chamber took a deep breath, slowly opening his eyes, accustoming himself to the painful sensation. He placed his arm on the back of Viper's seat, giving her more room to work.
- Thank you. - The thanks came out as a sigh of relief. Viper exhaled heavily, focusing on cleaning the wound.
- No need to thank me. It's counterproductive for an agent to die in the field. - Viper tried to sound pragmatic. It sounded as if she were trying to deflect what might come of that kind of conversation.
The Frenchman nodded, his eyes looking up.
- I hate dying. - He confessed, licking his lips. Viper stopped cleaning his wound, slowly raising her eyes to his face. - Even though I know we'll be back, it feels... agonizing... like... a pressure pan about to explode... and then turning back… - Chamber turned his head toward her, trying to focus his gaze. Viper unconsciously moved closer, allowing him to see her better. - It's like postponing the explosion. - His words hung in the air, and Chamber was silent for a moment. Viper tried to tell herself he was admitting something obvious. Anyone would be afraid to die. However, his gaze expressed a vulnerability she had never seen in him. Something in her chest warmed, touched by his words. - Thank you for not letting me die… Merci beaucoup.
Viper didn't look away, mesmerized by the expression of gratitude. She couldn't remember anyone ever thanking her for saving a life, even though she had done so countless times. It felt... good.
She scratched her throat, realizing she'd been staring at him too much. She turned away, grabbing a clean gauze pad and wetting it with saline.
- Like I said, it's best if you stay alive. - She dabbed the gauze over his wound, trying to focus. - Don't get excited, Fabrón. You could still die in countless ways. At least you didn't come into contact with my toxins. You'd already be dead from them.
Chamber's mouth twitched with a smile and he leaned his head back against the seat, staring at the ceiling.
- I lied before. - His voice was weak, but it held amusement. - I hate being poisoned. Of all deaths, this and drowning are the ones I hate most.
Viper nodded, making a mental note that she now knew how to make Chamber suffer more when she finally decided to kill him. The possibility, which had crossed her mind frequently months before, felt foreign to her thoughts now. Especially as she was working to keep him alive.
- I hate it too. - She finally admitted, changing the gauze to finish cleaning the wound. - It's... Frustrating... My filters don't work against the toxins from... the other one.
Chamber glanced at her sideways, licking his lips.
- That was always your idea, non? Mounting agony, cultivating dread... Torture in combat. - Viper shook her head, silently admitting that she enjoyed playing with her opponents' minds before striking. - Not my style. But it suits you... You're not afraid to get dirty. It's sexy.
The American let out a breath like a laugh, pulling her hands away to peel off some bandages.
- You're already delirious from the lack of blood.
She took a few pieces of gauze, placing them over the wound and securing them in place with the tape.
- Maybe. But you're really sexy. - Viper looked up at Chamber, only to look away again when she met his eyes. An intense brown pair. She had to start deliberately avoiding that gaze that was bringing her new sensations. - Très sexy. Ah! - Chamber gasped as Viper pressed the gauze tighter than necessary against his skin.
- It should stop the bleeding. Let me see the other one. - She stood up, sitting to his right and examining the hole in his shoulder.
Chamber gave a breathless laugh, biting his lower lip.
- You know, you don't have to get defensive when someone compliments you, Sabine. - He rested his head back against the seat, watching Viper inject the serum into his shoulder. He swallowed dry. - You're an extremely beautiful woman. You should let the world attest to that. I wouldn't mind worshipping you every day if it didn't cost me...
- Forward. - Viper pushed Chamber's shoulder, making him lean forward. - And shut up.
- Umm... My physical integrity... - He finished in a murmur, resting his elbows on his knees.
Viper rolled her eyes, grateful he couldn't see her burning cheeks. The bullet had indeed gone through him, the hole obvious and larger from behind. If Viper wanted, she could have run a finger along it. She scanned his muscular back, noticing the geometric pattern of his tattoos. She frowned for a moment. He had several scratches and bruises scattered across his back. Judging by the deep purple hue, they looked like recent injuries. How could he...
Viper's mouth formed a soft "ah," and she studied Chamber's face in profile. He had thrown himself on top of her earlier, shielding her from the grenade blast. She hadn't thought about it until that moment. The moment had passed quickly, and she was busy with the mission.
She was looking at him too much, admiring him too much. Well, everyone in the Protocol had already looked out for each other. It was normal to sacrifice oneself for one's comrades. Anyone would do it in the heat of the moment... Even if Chamber had admitted he was afraid of dying... It wasn't anything... special...
Viper quickly grabbed the saline solution and applied it to the wound. She dabbed it with the gauze, a little more gently.
- I didn't know you were this kind of doctor too… - Chamber commented, breaking the silence. Viper shook her head. Of course he wasn't going to be quiet.
- That's basic first aid. - She replied dryly, running the gauze over his back.
- Oui… Mais… Your research. I know it. You work to heal people. - He turned his head slightly toward her, trying to relax his back as she treated him. - Why not become a doctor?
Viper discarded the soiled gauze, picking up a new one. She needed some time to think, reflecting on her life choices. She knew that if she took too long, he'd end up back to babbling.
- I think it's ineffective to save one life at a time when I can help several at once. A well-performed surgery saves one person and boosts egos. It's easy to forget how insulin saves lives every day.
Chamber nodded slowly, running a hand over the back of his neck. Viper quickly tore her gaze from his flexed biceps, busying herself with finishing cleaning the bullet hole in his back. She focused on peeling off the bandages next, trying hard to ignore how defined his body was.
- But... What about Reyna's sister? - Viper's hands stilled, and she slowly turned to him. He might not see the murderous look in her eyes, but Chamber knew he was treading on dangerous ground. - Everyone knows you help her, Sabine.
- Everyone should mind their own business. - She growled, grabbing a gauze pad and pressing it against Chamber's wound, securing it in place with the tape. The French agent gasped at the aggressive movement, his lips tightening.
- Pardon... - He spoke softly, letting out a sigh.
They fell silent. However, it wasn't the kind of stillness Viper appreciated. It was tense, filled with unspoken words. With things she didn't want to admit. With walls she'd built and wasn't sure she wanted to tear down.
There was a crack in one of her walls. The kind that left her defenseless, vulnerable.
And the kind that also let some light in.
- Lean back. - She pulled Chamber back against the seat. He closed his eyes, letting her work, resting his right hand on his own leg. She followed the same procedure as before without saying anything. Gauze, saline, cleaning. How strange Chamber's stillness was. It didn't suit him. - I had… - She began speaking slowly, hesitantly, breaking through some of the discomfort she felt. - A brief introduction to clinical medicine at university… - She admitted, feeling the crack in her wall widen. - But… - She swallowed, knowing Chamber's eyes were on her, hanging on every syllable she uttered. - I don't handle the office well... Or the red room… - Viper pulled out some bandages. She must have been injured too and didn't know it. The lack of blood on her brain would explain why she was opening up so much to Chamber. Chamber, who was a... filthy, annoying, lying bastard? - Lucia is... A special case... I owe it to both of them...
Chamber nodded slowly, his eyes glazing over to her.
- Incroyable... - He sighed, tilting his head to the side, struggling to focus his gaze on her. - You could destroy the world as much as save it...
Viper lifted a shoulder, licking her lips as she peeled off some bandages.
- But tell me, Fabrón… - She began to comment, trying to divert the subject. - Are the French armed forces so desperate that they're hiring snipers who can't see?
Viper waited until he stopped laughing before taping a piece of gauze to his wound. A smile played on her own lips as she applied the bandage.
- Non... - He shook his head, his eyes glinting with amusement. - Not even if I had the surgery to correct my vision would they allow me to be a sniper... By ordinary means at least. I was... An exception due to a display of great skill. - Viper nodded, checking his body one last time as she finished applying the gauze to the wound. Aside from the scratch on his cheek, he seemed fine. He would survive the rest of the trip. - Let's say a hypothetical shot by a certain unknown someone was the successful result of a failed mission. - Viper took a last gauze pad and wet it with the serum. She cupped Chamber's chin, making him look at her as she ran the damp gauze over his cheek. - And that the sniper, whom you don't know, shouldn't even have been in the position to take that shot.
Viper pressed her lips together, holding back a smile.
- Chamber, you ruined an official mission just to prove you could shoot even though you were nearsighted? - She recapitulated, raising an eyebrow.
- I'm just telling you a hypothetical story. - Chamber smiled at her, stepping a little closer. Viper didn't back away. - But I wanted to be a sniper. And I found my way. - She took a Band-Aid, sticking it over his scratch. She ran her thumb over the bandage, looking at him closely. - You know how I am. I've always been a spoiled brat. - He shrugged, tilting his head slightly to the side. - I always get what I want.
She raised her eyebrows, shaking her head slowly. Her eyes dropped to his lips again, licking her own.
- No one can have everything they want. Dealing with reality must be hard for you, right?
- Not really… - Chamber ran his hand down her leg, touching Viper's thigh with his knuckles. Her breath hitched, suddenly aware that she hadn't yet removed her own hands from his. - I conquer what I want.
She watched his mouth move, ending with his lips parted. Her thumb brushed over the Band-Aid again, caressing it, and her other hand rested on his good shoulder. She lifted her eyes to his and almost melted when she met their honey-colored eyes. He leaned closer, their noses touching. His nose was cold, so Viper felt a warm glow as he approached.
Damn, she was dying to kiss Chamber.
- I… - She spoke softly, in an unconscious whisper. She forced herself to remember what they were doing and who they were. Trained agents. They didn't have time for this.
- You… - Chamber smirked. That damn smile, with that ridiculous dimple on one side, was melting her icy heart. Their lips were inches apart. She could feel his presence almost pressed against her, his bare torso a temptation hard to resist.
Chamber was Chamber and he was... Vincent... The boy who made her laugh and told her he loved her. Sabine remembered he wasn't that boy anymore.
But whoever the new Vincent was, Sabine was starting to like him.
Oh my God, was she liking him???
- You need antibiotics. - She nodded, pulling away abruptly. Her heart was pounding in her chest, her breath coming in short gasps for no apparent reason. Damn, it was all too much for her.
Viper busied herself gathering up the soiled gauze and packing the first aid kit. She avoided Chamber's gaze, knowing she would find disappointment there. A reflection of her own feelings.
She was disappointed in herself for allowing so many emotions, so many cracks in her armor.
And she was also disappointed that she hadn't kissed him sooner. Because, by golly, it felt strangely good to have him break down her walls.
Sabine wanted to let Vincent in.
Meanwhile, Viper stood, stepping away from Chamber as if distance could rebuild what he was dismantling.
She lingered in the back of the jet, discarding gauze and rearranging the first aid kit unnecessarily. Her heart pounded, her chest tightening with an unusual pain.
She wanted him close.
She wanted him far away.
Vincent used to be her friend.
Chamber...
What was he?
She grabbed a bottle of water for herself, drinking its contents greedily as she thought.
She didn't like Chamber.
She just stayed up late talking to him, shared her interests, sought to spend meaningful time with him, waited anxiously to see him again, had saved his life and desperately wanted to return to his arms and kiss him with a desire that was becoming difficult to contain.
It. Didn't. Mean. Anything.
She grabbed another bottle of water and a pack of antibiotics, marching back to the passenger area. He was hunched over, his arms resting on his knees. He turned to face her when he heard her approach, straightening his posture.
- Sabine, I'm…
- One pill. Now. - She pushed the bottle and blister pack toward him, then crossed her arms.
Good heavens, she was terrified. She couldn't remember the last time she'd felt such a whirlwind of emotions.
Chamber took the items, pursing his lips. He didn't mention that they were almost kissing minutes earlier. Which was a huge relief for the American. He pulled out an antibiotic and popped it in his mouth, opening the water bottle, and downing it. He turned his eyes toward her, raising an eyebrow.
- Aren’t you going to sit down? - He said, putting down the bottle.
Viper shifted her weight, remembering how they'd been moments before. She wanted to sit down. There was nothing wrong with that. She'd spent the last few weeks sitting next to him on missions.
However, she thought that if she sat next to him at that moment, considering how she felt, it would be to make out with him.
"Coward.” A little voice whispered in her head, evidencing her hesitation. Since when had she been afraid to get close to anyone? She was Viper, for God's sake! The scariest agent in Protocol. The others stayed away from her.
- I need my pods. - She grumbled, snatching the pack from his hand and heading back to the back of the jet.
Viper leaned against a wall when she reached the spot, placing her hand over her chest. It wasn't adrenaline that was making her heart race.
Hormones. Oxytocin, endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin. Everything that caused pleasure and attachment in humans. It was a simple reaction composed of bonds of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen. She could recreate the substance that ran wildly through her veins in the lab if she wanted. Basic chemistry.
That's what Chamber was. Just another chemical reaction. Nothing more than a carbon-based living entity.
It. Didn't. Mean. Anything.
Viper grabbed her AirPods and cell phone. She returned to the seating area, her head held high as if ready for battle. Her posture almost sagged when she found Chamber massaging his good shoulder with his face turned away from hers.
- Will we arrive soon? - He asked as she approached, sitting beside him.
- Just maybe an hour. - She said casually, looking at her phone screen. She connected her AirPods, putting them in her ears.
- What are you listening to? - Chamber turned to her, leaning back against his seat.
Viper took a deep breath, staring at the screen so she wouldn't have to meet the gaze that was making her heart race.
- Radiant chemical reactions in unicellular organisms and the consequences for the concept of evolution of homo sapiens sapiens.
- Seems fun. - Chamber smirked and held out his hand to her. - Can I hear it too?
Viper glanced at him sideways. Too close. She should have sat on the other side. Yet she wanted him close. Close as few people had ever been. She'd forgotten what it was like to have someone who wouldn't back away when they encountered her barriers.
She silently placed one of her pods in his palm, playing the podcast, and wrapping her arms around herself. Chamber put on the airpod and closed his eyes, listening to the narrators.
It was a theoretical podcast, full of concepts only Viper understood. And the narrators' voices weren't the most appealing. Chamber's body slowly softened, his breathing becoming calmer and more rhythmic.
As Viper tried to remember what anaphase meant, thoughts of the man beside her clouding her logical thinking, Chamber fell asleep. His head lolled to the side, resting on Viper's shoulder.
The American agent stiffened, turning her head slowly to Chamber, her murderous gaze already prepared. She slowly softened her gaze, realizing he was sleeping peacefully. His expression was tranquil, as if he felt comfortable resting there.
Viper switched the podcast to a calming song she liked, giving up on paying attention. She adjusted herself in her seat, avoiding any sudden movements.
Cautiously, Sabine rested her head on Vincent's, feeling sleep weigh down on her as well, exhausted from the mission and the whirlwind of emotions. It was a comfortable, somehow comforting, position, completely different from the one she'd found on the way to the mission. Sabine felt a surprising peace, her chest warm with contentment.
She fell asleep easily, snuggling into him and ignoring all the voices telling her to run away before something bad happened to her heart.
