I wish people in this fandom would stop demanding utter politeness in response to racism.

I also wish folks would realize that shows are very rarely an escape for everyone, that countless minorities have to see real world politics that are quite literally set against them make their way into a TV show that's meant to be enjoyed by all (which at that point should have you questioning who the "all" is here if it's discriminatory against Very Specific Groups).

"I don't want politics in my TV show! Stop bringing in politics!" The politics is already there. It's always going to be there, and it's never going to leave unless you fancy watching nothing but flat shapes moving soundlessly across the screen. Also lol are you not literally watching Star Wars, what's this sudden aversion to politics in your shows

Racism is inherently rude. This sentiment assumes that racism is a minor, blunt mistake that needs to be faced with love and care and concern and educational resources (which we do provide). Emotion on the part of the offended person automatically equates any number of things (bullying, "you just want to be right", etc). If your education isn't served with a spoon of sugar, it's counterproductive and the resulting lack of change is your fault.

But racism in itself is rude. It's mean. It's bitter. It's evil. Doesn't matter how it's phrased or when it's timed, it's automatically dehumanizing. And the dehumanized people who have to deal with it have been dealing with it for their entire lives.

Someone who says something racist walks into the situation expecting to at least partially get away with the remark, and then to have their hand held, and to be responded to in a very specific way so that they don't really need to take responsibility for their actions. They want to walk away feeling the same way they walked in: confident and in control.

People who experience racism are walking in having dealt with those types of people--and worse--for sometimes literal decades. These people (the racists) are not new, but they all think they are. They have a limited range of arguments and presentations for their opinions, but they don't realize it.

It's the same principle as "you've seen one, you've seen them all". Patience wears thin. The predictability of certain paths of interaction, no matter how civil or curt, shows us that people refuse to change. These people walk in never having been corrected for a thing in their lives, and we walk in knowing they're expecting us to continue letting them be like that. We're walking in with lifetimes of racist harassment, belittlement, microaggressions, silencing, futile attempts at education, and sometimes outright violence preceding and backing up our responses to these wash-rinse-repeat instances of racism.

Forgive us if we're not "polite".

he also once tried to “use up” the last of his salt while making me breakfast. i had a bite of eggs with a solid rock chunk of salt in it and almost threw up.
