Why is it so common to ask random strangers about murderers, and get quotes about how they’re “nice” and “caring” - people who didn’t even know them personally? 

Imagine if you were in their position and you had a family member who’d been abusive for years, and now you’re seeing some random neighbor describing them as “nice” or “polite” all over the news, as if their opinion has any relevance whatsoever.

It ends up creating the same narrative every time, painting the abuser in a sympathetic light.

I feel that reporters often try to paint abusive murderers in a sympathetic light in an attempt to portray the event as an isolated tragedy, and not a result of a overarching societal problem. Ignorance is bliss, I suppose.

What I don’t get is the headline, “We didn’t recognize that he was dangerous.” In the parts reproduced below, yes they DID. One of them even says he had a feeling what was up when he saw their town was in the news.

So where did that quotation come from? It comes from a part of the article where they’re talking about when they were CHILDREN. So the same media outlet is doing the same thing yet again!

I agree, teenage boys do need MORE emphasis on consent than is already taught to them.

But women also need to stop being taught to be paranoid when men aren’t even tought that rape, assault, abuse, etc. is something that could happen to them (and is statistically far more likely to happen to them than women, as men are 80% of all violent crime victims). Women also need to be taught that men aren’t the only abusers/rapists they need to worry about. That lack of awareness brought on by that is what leads to the high rates of abuse in lesbian relationships.
