Thoughts on the Tumblr Purge
My friends, I am old. I have been an internet denizen since the days of dial up text-only BBS proto-web. I used modems to talk to people over computers before AOL was sending out free FLOPPY DISKS. My first computer had NO HARD DRIVE- you read that right, it did not possess a hard drive. It ran DOS 2.0 off off a floppy disc in drive B while I used whatever program in Drive A. I have been posting fan fiction online since before it was called fan fiction. I posted stories to a BBS on a board named âMedia INSPIRED Stories and Artâ or MISA for short back in 1988 or so.
So, Iâve seen this kind of thing happen before. People are talking about the ff.net purge, and the LJ strikethrough and, believe me, they are RIGHT to call back to those events. But I can tell you, it was happening before then. I know this pattern. It is very predictable.Â
I have seen it happen with Facebook âsecret groupsâ, with yahoo clubs/groups, with geocities and angelfire sites, AOL chatrooms and âclubsâ, all the way back to Compuserv and popular BBS systems.Â
Do NOT take comfort, however small, in the fact that the guidelines CURRENTLY state that written erotica will be safe, because it will NOT stay that way.
It is SOP to target art and photography FIRST- itâs the easiest to sell as a protective measure for âchildrenâ who arenât supposed to be able to access the site in the first place. They are banking on being able to disregard any criticism, no matter how accurate, by spinning the same tired talking points about underage access to âpornographyâ. They are BANKING on the social stigma of seeking out sexually explicit or kink-oriented images to silence the majority of people impacted.Â
They are COUNTING on the people who read and write sexually explicit and kink-oriented STORIES to get scared, check the guidelines and go âwelp, sucks for artists, but whew!â and do⊠virtually nothing.
Because then, all the artists and photographers leave. Some will find new venues, others will stop creating altogether. Content will be lost. Forever.
Once the dust settles from that, the guidelines will change again. Because NOW the most scandalous thing on the site will be written content. Suddenly âexplicit fictionâ will start being called âpornographyâ and the exact same concerns that let them flush all the sexual visual media from the site will send the fic-writers down the same path.
They HAVE to do it that way, because they only have the power to get away with it when they SPLIT THE ART/CREATOR COMMUNITY IN HALF.
What is happening now is the first half of a divide and conquer strategy that works really, really well.Â
Iâm pretty pro-porn, pro-kink, pro-sex in general, but even if you are staunchly ANTI-PORN, you need to be very worried right now.Â
Am I peeved that Iâm going to lose access to some really great explicit art that I enjoy? Yeah, a bit. Iâm not afraid to admit that. I am 43 years old and I recognize that I am a bit of a hedonist (like most humans) and that dirty pictures make parts of my brain real happy. Thatâs just⊠basic neurology for most (but not all) people.
Am I writing this because I am peeved about losing those dirty pictures? HELL NO. I am writing this because I know whatâs coming. Itâs a tired old joke to me by now.Â
Whatâs coming is an ever-increasing restriction on content. Whatâs coming is a site that uses âthink of the children!â (that, again, are not supposed to even have access to this site to begin with) as a way to silence more and more and more people.
Before long, political posts will be flagged as inappropriate, LGBTQIA+ content will be called âsensitiveâ or âtoo matureâ, the restrictions on art and fiction will get more and more and more stringent, people will get blocked or flagged for simply stating that they are a sexual violence survivor, resources for victims of oppression will dry up, ANY mention of Religion or Spirituality will be discouraged.
If ANY of that is important to you, even if you HATE pornography in all its possible forms, for any number of reasons, you need to be concerned! You do. Because sooner or later, something you DO care about and support will be the thing in the crosshairs and youâll discover two things: (1) the people who cared about fighting censorship are long gone, and (2) you are now the âlowlifeâ in the eyes of the people that remain that you once considered the âpornographersâ to be⊠and maybe, just maybe, you were as wrong about them as the people who think you are the one that deserves to get booted are about you.
The âslippery slopeâ is a famous logical fallacy. Iâm not talking about a slippery slope- Iâm talking about a well documented pattern of behavior that has been happening regularly in regards to policing internet spaces since internet spaces have existed. This isnât a slippery slope situation. This is an established and effective way to censor and disenfranchise internet communities.
Do NOT delude yourself into thinking you are safe. You arenât.
And if you think âthey wouldnât risk destroying the site! It would be financial suicide!â you donât understand the countless ways that huge corporations can make money off of a failing forum!Â
From someone whoâs survived MySpace, livejournal, deviantart, and fanfiction.netsâ content purges and bad policy updates, hereâs some advice on how to get through tumblrâs recent bullshit:
- donât knee jerk delete. I know itâs tempting to peace out immediately but hang on and do the other steps first. Out right ghosting and erasing everything is how fandoms die.
- archive everything on your blog you want to keep
- tell your followers how they can archive and keep your work too. A lot of fic and art were only saved from ff.net and lj because other people saved it first. If youâre cool with other people saving your work for them to personally keep, let them know this. You can absolutely discourage reposting but I really do highly recommend you allow people to personally save fic and art they like and are worried will disappear forever. Digital Dark Ages are a real thing.
- tell people where youâre jumping ship to. Give links. Keep that info up, even if youâve left the site.
- go through who you follow and find out where else you can follow them. Save their work if theyâll allow it. Itâs tedious as hell but if you want to keep up with people on here clicking on their page to check in is the best way to do it.
- support places like ao3. This is exactly why ao3 asks for donations a few times a year. They are a 100% anti-purging, judgement free, ad free non profit run by an elected board and protected by lawyers. Places like ao3 literally save fandom so please continue to support them and other similar archives. This is exactly why ao3 is so important.
Beyond Mine
mrjamiehayes:
Jamie tried to think of what he could say to make Valandra believe him. âOne of the girls flinched when he went to touch them. It wasnât hard to guess after that.â
Val accepted his explanation and nodded her head.  âI missed that.  Those girls owe their lives to you.â  She gave him a small appreciative smile.  âAlright. so where are we going now?âÂ
Beyond Mine
mrjamiehayes:
âMen like him are why God has left Heaven.â Jamie growled as he stared the man down. Then he sighed as he looked back over at Valandra. âI canât explain it really. But I couldnât go in.â
Val shook her head. Â âWhatever you say. Â But seriously, how did you know about the priest. You saved those girls.â Â
Beyond Mine
mrjamiehayes:
Jamie growled as he saw the priest just giving up. Fucking coward. He would have to get Maze out to kill that fucker when he made bail. No way that he was going to allow him to live another day.
Val cuffed the priest and a black and white cop car showed up to take him in. Â Once the officers took the priest away, Val walked back out to Jamie. Â âWhat happened to you back there. Â Iâm surprised you didnât want to take a part in having the father arrested.â
Beyond Mine
mrjamiehayes:
Jamie watched on with pride and jealousy brewing in his chest. He was so proud that he had chosen a woman like her. But he wished he could punish the priest.
The priest cried out when he was finally caught and held his hand. âI-I want a lawyer.â
Val gave the priest a look of disgust and fury. Â âYeah youâre going to get one. Â And youâre going to need one. Â Hands up, on your head, interlace your fingers.â Â She moved towards him still holding the gun and waiting for him to comply. Â âGirls, I need you all to go back outside. Â Sit in a pew together.â Â
Beyond Mine
mrjamiehayes:
âIf you donât hurry heâs going to take those young girls into their class for the next hour.â Jamie growled as he watched those young girls gathering around the priest. It disgusted him. How could Father allow a man like that into his âhouseâ but he, a former angel, was not allowed in?
Val didnât ask for anymore proof. Â She called for backup even as she went back into the church and into the sunday school room. Â She drew her gun when she saw the priest with his hand under one of the girlâs dress. Â âGet away from her, now.â Â She said in a cold deadly voice. Â
Beyond Mine
mrjamiehayes:
Jamie didnât find anyone in the church that fit their description, but that priest in thereâŠÂ âThat priest is molesting little girls.â He said as soon as Valandra came over to join him. Then he smirked at her while coming up with an excuse as to why he couldnât come into the church. âI was trying to see who would react to a cop being in the building. Nothing suspicious.â
Val shook her head at him. Â âHow do you know that? Â Did somebody tell you this?â Â She was already getting her phone out to call for backup. Â
Beyond Mine
mrjamiehayes:
Jamie tried to enter the church but his whole body started to burn when he tried to enter. Fucker. Father just had to continue to mess with him in this way. Now he couldnât even protect his woman from a deranged man. Oh well. He could work his powers from out here. Taking a deep breath, he focused all of his energy on finding the person with the most frayed desires.
Val turned to say something to Jamie and found that he wasnât besides her. Â That was odd. Â She frowned but turned back to the priest. Â âI understand, er, father. Â Hereâs my card if you think of anyone with that description, and please warn the women in your... congregation to be careful walking home at night. Â Thank you for your time.â Â She looked around once more and then left. Â âWhat the hell? Â I turn around and you were just gone.â Â
Beyond Mine
mrjamiehayes:
Jamie gave Valandra his best chastising look at how she was trying to protect him. âI do not need a gun to take down a suspect. People just tend to do what I want them to anyway.â Then he looked her up and down as he parked. âDo not put yourself into any unnecessary danger, Valandra.âÂ
Val got out of the car as he parked.  âItâs my job, Hayes.â  She headed into the church, keeping an eye out for anything that made her instincts flare up.  She flashed her badge at the priest or whatever they called a man in his position.  âWeâre looking into the recent murders in this area.  We believe the suspect might be somebody who failed to be a priest.  Maybe somebody who attends multiple sermons a week, anybody match that description?âÂ
Beyond Mine
mrjamiehayes:
âIâm not going to leave you in total danger. Besides, there is no one that can provoke a psychopath like me.â Jamie grinned then stepped on the gas pedal to get them there faster.
Val frowned at him. Â âIâm the detective, Mr. Hayes. Â Youâre the one whoâs just consulting. Â You donât jump into danger. Â You can come in, poke around with me, maybe ask some questions, but if the shit hits the fan, you take cover and let me handle it. Â Iâm the one with the gun.â
Beyond Mine
mrjamiehayes:
âGood girl.â Jamie said as he got in himself then started to drive them to Saint Catherineâs Catholic church.Â
Val gave Jamie a dirty glare but settled back in the seat and leaned her head against the headrest with a soft sigh. Â âWhen we get to the church, let me do all the talking. Â Youâre just a civilian consultant, not a police officer. Â Let me do my job.â Â
Beyond Mine
mrjamiehayes:
âLike my car would ever get a scratch.â Jamie scoffed as he opened his car door. âJust get in. Youâll get to say that you road in the same car as Daniel Craig.â
Val let out an exasperated huff of air. Â But at this point it would take longer to argue than it would to just get in his car and let him drive. Â She got into the car and whipped the seatbelt on with annoyance. Â âHappy now? Â And like I would ever say that.â Â
