I feel like simply calling JK Rowling a transphobe isn't strong enough anymore. Like. This is not your grandpa calling you by your deadname at a restaurant kind of transphobic. This is her wanting to eradicate all trans people (with an extra special hatred towards trans women specifically). I have a legitimate question regarding Rowling and I want y'all's opinions.

Is it OK to partake in Harry Potter media if I bought it used, pirated it, was gifted it without asking, or have owned it for years at this point? By all means, treat each of those individually, because they are not all the same

Like, I have the DVDs from when I was a kid. My step-dad recently got me the soundtracks on vinyl for free from his work. I bought the Half Blood Prince at a used books store a few years ago, and I'm completely willing to pirate the ebooks when I want to use them to practice reading in a foreign language.

in my opinion it's still a tad questionable, because the material itself is still chock full of harmful stereotypes about many minority groups, particularly black and asian people, as well as some incredibly obvious antisemitism in the way she depicts the goblins in particular.

obviously I'm not going to tell you how to live your life, bc we're strangers on the internet to each other and therefore shouldn't really be using each other's opinions as the final say. examine yourself and your attitudes, talk to the people around you (particularly anyone you know that is harmed by the things she say and does), and go from there.

as for practicing a new language; I get it. but there are so many books made by people that don't suck that you can pick out and practice with. sorry if I sound a little blunt but that's bc in my opinion that shouldn't be a very hard thing to do. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I grew up with those books too, and when the reality of the things she's done fully hit me, I was a wreck. but then I picked myself up, engaged with better media made by better people, and quit giving money to a woman who would see the death of many people that I love. you can do that too, I genuinely believe that.

If I'm being honest, I barely even read them anymore. I haven't read any of them in english in years and even the ones I use to practice German are becoming tedious.

I never really looked past the surface of the story so I never noticed the racism, but I'll take your word for it. After all, it tracks with what I know about her as a person.

Like you said, we're strangers, so your opinion isn't the end all be all for me, but once I will give it legitimate consideration once I make my decision. I'm just going to wait a little while to see what else people say
