wenn ich versuche einzuschlafen aber dann erinnere ich mich und erinnere ich mich und erinnere ich mich und erinnere ich mich
I followed this Tumblr to learn a little bit about German, not to be reminded of the existential horror that dogs my thoughts when I try to sleep. How could you do this to me @translatingpoststogerman I thought we were friends 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Ah yes, the psychological torture of being alone with your thoughts in a dark room. If anyone needs it, here's my cheat sheet on how to combat this:
Step 1: Write down all of your thoughts before going to sleep.
Step 2: If your thoughts are still bothering you after writing them down, realize that you're not gonna solve this tonight. It's now time to distract yourself long enough to fall asleep.
Here are some techniques for that:
a) Force yourself to think about something else you have to concentrate on, like solving math problems in your head or try to think of as many names, cities, countries, whatever that start with the letter A, then B, then C, and so on, until you fall asleep.
b) Imagine that your thoughts are another person talking in public, and then imagine yourself walking away from them until you can no longer hear them.
c) Masturbate.
Step 3: If it's a psychological issue, work on it consistently. It will take forever until you see real progress, but as you know, the time will pass anyway. If you haven't started this process yet and don't know where to start, and it's anything to do with interpersonal relationships, start looking into Attachment Theory. If that doesn't feel like the right fit for you, keep looking.
Adding a technique that works for me: Imagine you're writing all your thoughts on a chalkboard. When you're done, take the eraser and wipe the board clean. Then turn around and walk out of the room.
Ooh, I'm gonna try this, thanks!
Adding a new trick: When you can't fall asleep, close your eyes and then move your eyeballs from side to side. Like when you're looking from side to side, but with your eyes closed.
Apparently, this will make it easier to fall asleep for some people, but for some it won't work (according to the comments I read).
