worldbuilding is what writers do when they want to justify a petty aesthetic choice
Worldbuilding is also what writers do when they want to justify not actually writing.
Reading this comment was like looking down to see that I’ve been stabbed through the back in the middle of gloating.
Writing is zipping along through six pages in under an hour and then getting stuck on a single transition sentence for three weeks.
when the fuck did this get notes
While you were pondering over the transition sentence
2020 is a year
man the west just looooves thinking that every non-western country and nation is so underdeveloped and so primitive and so in need of help like this just reeks of racism and pretty much just the inability to even humour the idea that the countries that the west loves to think are below them are, in fact, better.
anywho props to all of the countries in africa.
They like to make their people think that the independence of the countries that they colonized was a mistake. That those countries would be better under their control, but that's bullshit, we all know better.
I saw a post talking about how Terry Pratchett only wrote 400 words a day, how that goal helped him write literally dozens of books before he died. So I reduced my own daily word goal. I went down from 1,000 to 200. With that 800-word wall taken down, I’ve been writing more. “I won’t get on tumblr/watch TV/draw/read until I hit my word goal” used to be something I said as self-restraint. And when I inevitably couldn’t cough up four pages in one sitting, I felt like garbage, and the pleasurable hobbies I had planned on felt like I was cheating myself when I just gave up. Now it’s something I say because I just have to finish this scene, just have to round out this conversation, can’t stop now, because I’m enjoying myself, I’m having an amazing time writing. Something that hasn’t been true of my original works since middle school.
And sometimes I think, “Well, two hundred is technically less than four hundred.” And I have to stop myself, because - I am writing half as much as Terry Pratchett. Terry fucking Pratchett, who not only published regularly up until his death, but published books that were consistently good.
And this has also been an immense help as a writer with ADHD, because I don’t feel bad when I take a break from writing - two hundred words works up quick, after all. If I take a break at 150, I have a whole day to write 50 more words, and I’ve rarely written less than 200 words and not felt the need to keep writing because I need to tie up a loose end anyways.
Yes, sometimes, I do not produce a single thing worth keeping in those two hundred words. But it’s much easier to edit two hundred words of bad writing than it is to edit no writing at all.
Something else to thank Pterry for. :->
Writer: I don’t know if anybody will like my story. I’ve never done it before. What if it’s too hard? I’m not sure of anything, I’m second-guessing it, I’m scared that it’ll turn out bad. What if I try my best and still fail? What if my idea is overdone or cliche? Would anybody even be interested in what I have to say? Me, sobbing on my knees: please… write the fuckigngbgng book… stop doubting yourself into a corner… you’ll never know how good you are until you have work to reflect upon… time is limited, and it only runs forward, so please do the same!

Them: Hello sir, may I have your name?
Me: No, you may not have my name, but you may call me John
Them: Sir, this is a DMV and I am not a fae
Me: Oh? Then you wouldn’t mind holding this iron horseshoe then, right?

this is LITERALLY the funniest promotional piece that anyone has ever made for a tv show or movie ever
The best part is the story behind it. After Edgar Wright stormed off the project, this movie almost got canceled. It took Peyton Reed literally finishing it with his crew in a single year, and Paul Rudd contributing on the writing to get it done within the deadline. And apparently, because they had to rush production ON a reduced budget no less, the effects weren’t even close to done by the time they had to put out Trailers and TV spots, and most of what was finished, or near done, had to be used in the theatrical spots. So Rudd and Douglas here supposedly came up with this idea, on the spot, as it would at least get people talking and avoid reusing too many of the same shots.
They accidentally hit the precise vein of our generation’s comedy
