Looking between both of them, Mina felt herself cornered.
Sitting at the table with both of them on the other side, Mina knew this was going to be hard. she hadn't set out to fall in love with Lestat when they started sleeping together. It just sort of happened and then they realized they didn't like anyone else like they liked each other and agreed to become exclusive. And in the years that followed, they'd fallen in love. Gabby had been a miracle. Mina still wasn't sure how it happened. She believed it had something to do with what Dracula did to her. Like the fact she wasn't quite mortal and not quite immortal had opened this miracle up.
And Mina had made him promise her that it would be different than it was with Claudia. She had known Claudia, lovedh er like a sister. She wa tched her struggle with the fact her creators didn't love her as much as they loved each other.
But Claudia was dead and Mina mourned her daily. her daughter wasn't going to be put in the same position.
Mina and Lestat had had an agreement when they started. That they would end it amicably when he and Louis decided to get back together. It hadn't...quite gone that way. Mina hadn't expected it when he came into their bedroom and told her. It wasn't THAT he'd done it, it was the way he'd done it that had hurt her so much. He'd been talking to Louis, and they wanted to try again. That was the line.
Louis wrote a tell all book and Lestat wanted to get back together with him.
Mina had stood by Lestat for decades and their relationship felt like it was thrown away so easily. Of course he told her he'd agonized over it. He'd felt so horrible for choosing Louis. And she believed him, because he'd never lied to her.
She was still working on moving past it. She'd finally managed to voice her true feelings about it to Lestat but it would be awhile before they got close to what they were.
And here she was now. Because eventually Louis would move into the house. And he would be a part of Gabby's life. She could be a nightmare about it. She could make everyone's life just miserable and be everything she promised Lestat she wouldn't be. But that felt beneath her.
She had no right to do that. They'd had a deal, and she planned to honor it.
She let her eyes stray over to Lestat. The stress showing on her face. It all depended on her. She was the thing standing in their way to being a full family. He would move into the house she and Lestat built together, and she would take Gabby once Gabby adjusted and move next door. Close enough that they could go back and forth to each other's houses all the time but far enough away that Mina had her own space and her kid could be away from...Lestat and Louis working through their issues.
She sipped her whiskey and finally looked at Louis, "Been awhile."
