"Life and fashion should be something to laugh at."
"I don't take photographs as a job. I want to capture the beauty in everyday life, and I believe that beauty exists in everyday life. Taking photographs used to be something I couldn't stop doing. I used to photograph everything like a documentary. But now, I don't see as much importance in recording everything like that. I'd rather share my feelings and thoughts. That's probably why I've come to enjoy playing music. Music is a better means of communication than photography."
Every word, spoken without pretense, resonates deeply. What is the source of this photographer's positive allure? I couldn't contain my excitement throughout our conversation. His words are full of humanity, and there's an unwavering something about them that shines through. His demeanor somehow reminded me of his close friend, Martin Margiela.
"What's so appealing about Martin is... his lack of anything. I love that 'lack of anything.' For example, this press room is all painted white, which gives it a very pure feel. And he has a sense of humor. Sometimes we take life too seriously. Even fashion is often taken too seriously. But life and fashion shouldn't be taken so seriously. I beg you, stop thinking about them that way. Both should be things that make you laugh. Martin makes us smile naturally. I think that's because, in addition to his extraordinary talent, he also possesses very ordinary thoughts."
