I hate the way you let me let my guard down. The way you made me think that I could be me around you. I hate the calm you gave my mind because now I'm back telling myself to hide it all, that no one could want me, that I'm broken. I hate how I thought there was something there between us, that maybe I'd stumbled onto something good. I hate that my life felt so right, I should have known things would go bad again, because they always do.

The Joke I wish No One Understood

I recently saw Joker and I loved it. There were several parts that stood out for me but there was one in particular that hit probably too close to home. “The worst part of having a mental illness is that people expect you to behave as if you don't. “ I wanted to laugh, I knew exactly what that meant but in that same moment it hit me, I couldn’t be the only one who understood and honestly that brings me so much pain. If I had one wish it would be that no one could get what that joke means because to get it is to come from such a dark place, such a hopeless place, where you honestly feel you have no one to reach out to. Absolutely no one deserves to feel that way. To those who don’t understand how that could be a joke: comedy comes from relatability, in this instance it’s the idea that those suffering should put on a brave face and just pretend that they have no issues, walk and talk like life has never set up an above-average hurdle for them. It’s funny because we have lived it when we never should have had to.

If any of you went to see Joker and any of your friends laughed at this part or any that seems concerning, I urge you, please hug them and tell them you are here for them, it may just be the very thing they need.
