Look. Look. It wasnβt Hamlet who decided to get poisoning.
Yes, itβs easy to characterize Hamlet as a guy who had one (1) job - kill Claudius to avenge his father - and ended up getting functionally the entire cast killed along the way. But that also literally applies to Claudius.
I will give you that Polinius is Hamletβs bad, and Ophelia is a direct result of that. But everybody else? Thatβs Claudius trying to kill Hamlet.
- Rosencranz & Guildenstern were carrying letters ordering Hamletβs death on the down-low (by Claudius). Those letters got reapplied to them
- Laertes was killed by his own poisoned foil. Poisoned by whom? By Claudius, to kill Hamlet with (Hamletβs blow should have been non-lethal)
- Hamlet was killed by the exact same thing. So⦠it worked!
- Gertrude drank the poisoned chalice. Poisoned by whom? BY CLAUDIUS. To kill Hamlet with. (And unlike Laertes, where Hamlet does the actual stabbing and the whole plot can be traced back to Poloniusβs death, the thing with Gertrude has nothing to do with Hamletβs Tomfoolery)
- Claudius is killed, yes, by Hamlet - with his own poisoned rapier and chalice! Murdering Claudius wasnβt even on the agenda that day! Hamlet just came out to have a good time!
I am not saying Hamlet and his tomfoolery are blameless. But Claudiusβs overkill attempts to off his heir leave a comparable swath to Hamletβs underkill attempts to avenge his father
And maybe Polonius needs to lurk behind fewer arrasses
Respectfully, in my opinion, all of these deaths are Hamletβs fault.
The first thing that happens in the play is Hamletβs dad comes to him as a ghost and says βClausius killed me. Your Uncle. Claudius. Right over there. Avenge me.β And instead of killing Claudius, Hamlet takes a roundabout route to fact check the ghost and gets everyone killed in the process.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were not working with Claudius. Claudius invited them to cheer Hamlet up, and see why he was acting so oddly, because they were his childhood friends. They didnβt know what was in the letter.
And yeah the poison foil/cup plot was Claudiusβ idea but it hinges entirely on Hamlet murdering Polonius. Laertes would never have agreed to it otherwise.
Polonius: Stabbed by Hamlet.
Ophelia: Driven to end her life from Hamlet killing her dad amongst other things
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern: Hamlet re-wrote Claudiusβ letter to order their deaths because he thought they were scheming with Claudius (they werenβt)
Laertes: Dies by poison, in a plot he would never have agreed to partake in had Hamlet not murdered his dad.
Gertrude:Β Dies by drinking the failsafe poison. That poisoned cup, and the duel itself, could not have existed if Hamlet didnβt stab Polonius.
Claudius: Stabbed by Hamlet.
Hamlet: Poisoned in the duel. The duel that would never have happened if he didnβt stab Polonius instead of Claudius.
The entire bottom row hinges on Laertes wanting revenge for his murdered father, all because Hamlet killed Polonius instead of Claudius (even though the ghost explicitly told him exactly who his murderer was). The choice to be skeptical, instead of direct, cost Hamlet eight lives, including his own.
Hamletβs biggest tomfoolery of all is that, to get revenge for his murdered father, he murderβs Laertesβ father (an innocent bystander), sending Laertes into the same rage and grief Hamlet felt, and giving him reason to agree to a poisoned duel.
Therefore, all of these deaths lay on Hamlet in the end.

FINALLY!!! We are at 99% of our goal in our campaign to evacuate the living hell of Gaza and rebuild our life in Ireland!
While people post Eid outfits, food, and family photos, my family in Gaza is trying to survive another day of bombs, hunger, fear, and unbearable heat.
There is NO safe place left in Gaza.
The bombardment continues every single day.
The explosions never stop.
And now summer has turned the tents they live in into literal ovens.
Imagine trying to sleep inside plastic and fabric under a burning sky while drones and airstrikes continue around you.
This is NOT a temporary hardship.
My family has lived through this nightmare for more than two years.
Two years of displacement.
Two years of terror.
Two years of watching their lives collapse piece by piece.
I am in Ireland, studying and trying to build a future, while every day I fear getting the phone call that my family did not survive the night.

Law enforcement continues using bunk science (hair matching, bite mark analysis, blood spatter analysis, drug sniffing dogs, polygraphs, etc) because they are convenient and because admitting that they're bullshit would lead to countless convictions being thrown out the window and likely a massive fllood oof lawsuits not just from people who were wrongfully convicted but also from the families of those executed over pseudoscientific methods.
Just in case people didn't know, drug sniffing dogs are almost always reacting to their HANDLERS, not to actual smells. If a handler's body language shows they want the dog to give an alert (which the dog will be awarded for), then the dog will alert. This is true even if the handler isn't consciously giving any signs or commands.
