I Know You { Shiyeon & Jongsuk }
life does not love him as the stars do. the moon announces jongsuk as her champion and the earth learns to revile his mercury blood and the silver that gleams through the hairline fractures in his bones. he does not belong to this planet, and yet with every step he sinks further into the soil of toil and subtle suffering. he bears the burden of gravity as he searches the aisles of his local mart for wholemeal bread—a punishment. a constant reminder that his skin is paperthin veneer and his celestial presence cannot be forgiven nor smothered. white bread is twenty won cheaper than it’s healthier counterpart and jongsuk reaches out across the aisle to grab it. celestial presence doesn’t notice piercing light is hunched over until the weight on his shoulder blades shifts and throws him down onto his back.
recognition is not tangible. it lies just outside the realm of his reality and only dares to tiptoe closer when he dreams in vignettes—the blinkers on his eyes create tunnel vision and cognizance flickers in and out of the blurred edges of his peripheral. recognition is not tangible but realisation hides behind a web flimsy and delicate and piercing light burns the diaphanous strings black and useless. the blinkers are dismantled and jongsuk lifts himself from the floor. he looks for the first time, memory sharpened and focus intensified, upon the face of familiarity.
“i know you.” the words tumble out coated in alkaline and soothes the acid in his mouth. he knows her face—her smile is pleasant symmetry that greets him every morning advertising skincare with practiced sweetness. but piercing light is blinding and under the artificial glare she glows white-hot. a goddess in her right.
“i know you.” the words are whispered, now conscious of earthly presence, curious eyes and furious fingers tapping away at little keyboards. he lends a hand and feels sunlit (uncomfortable) warmth seeping from her skin as he pulls her from her position and straightens her. recognition pounds her name against his head. familiarity screams her celestial presence until a gentle exhale exposes her secret to the world.
“marici.”
