As someone who enjoys reading, assigned reading is really weird.
I have been assigned many books to read through primary and on and everytime I receive the book I get super uninterested in reading it. It could be the best book to ever grace the shelves of stores all over the globe and as soon as its an assigned reading it will become the bane of my existence.
This works outside of school too. When I was growing up I had trouble writing, my letters would get mixed up and my handwriting was absolutely atrocious. My dad saw that I liked reading a book about horses and so he got me some Academy horse book, its been quite a few years I think they were going to school and riding horses. But, as soon as he told me he wanted me to write about what I was reading, I began to detest the book and the subject over all.
Now being out of school I've started reading books that I originally never wanted to touch. There was an "assigned" reading for my collage class called Save the Cat and I hated every idea of reading it because not only was it-by the professors explanation- going to teach me how to write but give me structure on what I write. And this has been something I've been learning since I started an English class so I was miffed and never picked up the book, we didnt use it anyway, no discussion or peer review, so it collected dust on my shelf. But I've started reading it now, out of boredom, and some of the points are pretty good.
